US urges Turkey, Hungary to ratify Swedish NATO application before summer

NATO member Turkey requested in October 2021 to buy 40 Lockheed Martin Corp F-16 fighters and nearly 80 modernization kits for its existing warplanes. Technical talks between the two sides recently concluded.

The Biden administration has said it supports the sale and has been in touch for months with Congress on an informal basis to win its approval. However, it has failed so far to secure a green light.

“As I have repeatedly made clear, I strongly oppose the Biden administration’s proposed sale of new F-16 aircraft to Turkey,” Senator Bob Menendez, Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a statement.

Inside the World Uyghur Congress: The US-backed right-wing regime-change network seeking the 'fall of China'

At the heart of this movement is the World Uyghur Congress (WUC), an international Uyghur organization that claims to be engaged in a "peaceful, nonviolent, and democratic" struggle for "human rights." The WUC considers China's northwestern Xinjiang region to be East Turkestan, and sees its Uyghur Muslim inhabitants not as Chinese citizens but instead as members of a pan-Turkic nation stretching from Central Asia to Turkey.

As this investigation establishes, the WUC is not a grassroots movement, but a US government-backed umbrella for several Washington-based outfits that also rely heavily on US funding and direction. Today, it is the main face and voice of a separatist operation dedicated to destabilizing the Xinjiang region of China and ultimately toppling the Chinese government.

While seeking to orchestrate a color revolution with the aim of regime change in Beijing, the WUC and its offshoots have forged ties with the Grey Wolves, a far-right Turkish organization that has been actively engaged in sectarian violence from Syria to East Asia.

which one might have supposed sunk to the nadir of credibility last year, when the Ukrain National Congress crushed its Donbas report, if not that illustrious period of NATO intervention in Libya.

BTW, Kommersant recently reported that the COE's finishing school, OSCE, is struggling to recruit fresh "leadership".

No security, no cooperation in Europe

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) may cease to exist. This warning was made by Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto. According to him, the collapse of the OSCE may come if its participants do not elect a chair country for 2024. Estonia put forward its candidacy for this post at the end of 2021, but Russia and Belarus are blocking it. Unless the 57 OSCE participating states quickly agree on a scenario acceptable to all, the world's largest regional organization will face its worst crisis in nearly 30 years of existence.
[...]
According to him, the organization was stymied by the dispute over the Estonian bid for the OSCE chairmanship in 2024. The OSCE, we recall, 57 countries (all states of the post-Soviet space, Europe, as well as the United States and Canada). Each year, one of them acts as the chairman of the organization, while the countries themselves nominate themselves as candidates for the chairmanship. Since all decisions in the OSCE are taken by consensus, all 56 countries must vote unanimously for the chairman. The organization is currently chaired by North Macedonia. Finland should lead the OSCE in 2025.
[...]
At the end of last year, Foreign Policy magazine published a long article in which Western sources complained that Russia did not allow Estonia to be approved as chairman for 2024, did not agree to extend the mandate of the OSCE monitoring mission in Ukraine (Moscow considered its work biased and suspected it employees in spying for Kiev), and most importantly, blocked the adoption of the organization's budget (€138 million) for 2023.

"At the moment, it is already obvious that Russia is not interested in observing not only the rules and procedures, but also the fundamental principles on the basis of which we act (in the OSCE. - Kommersant ) ," US Ambassador to the OSCE Michael Carpenter said the other day. Euractiv , adding that Western countries are looking for ways to get around the Russian veto . Among other things, they, according to him, created a special fund, from which the activities of individual OSCE participating states in Ukraine are now financed (demining, providing psychological assistance, mitigating the consequences of hostilities for the environment).

Early Confidence- and Security-Building Measures of the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe | June 24, 2016 |

.... it might be worth recalling that even at the height of bloc confrontation in Europe in the 1960s, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) held that détente, coupled with the offer of security co-operation, should complement deterrence, as recommended in its "Harmel Report" of December 1967.

This attitude, matched by the Soviet Union's declared objective of ensuring "peaceful coexistence" between different political and ideological systems, provided the basis for the convening of the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe (CSCE) in Helsinki in 1973. Thirty-five states - members of one or the other military bloc or neutral and non-aligned states - participated. The road to Helsinki was paved by a number of bilateral agreements between West Germany and the Soviet Union, Poland, Czechoslovakia and East Germany, the two German states' accession to the United Nations and the Four Power Agreement on Berlin, the signing of the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT I) by the Soviet Union and the United States and the initiation of the Mutual Balanced Force Reduction talks on conventional arms control in Central Europe.

Days before the Ukrainian military and Azov battalion started its artillery assault on the occupied Luhansk and Donetsk, the U.S. and UK pulled its contingent of OSCE-SMM members.

The recent OSCE chair from Poland was clearly not an independent person on the hostilities in Ukraine and beyond.

U.S. sanctions Russia-backed individuals over Moldovan destabilization protests, 6 June
The [US] Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control designated seven members of a group linked to sanctioned Moldovan oligarch, Ilan Shor, who fled Moldova in 2019 to evade a string of corruption charges and has since lived in Israel, where he was born. Shor, 36, is also the leader of Moldova's Moscow-friendly Shor Party, which has held recurring anti-government protests since last fall.

The protesters demanded that the government fully subsidize citizens' winter energy bills amid a cost-of-living crisis and "not involve the country in war." They also called for Moldovan President Maia Sandu to step down.

"These actors are a part of Russia's global information operations that have also targeted the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and countries in the Balkans," said U.S. Secretary of Stalking Antony Blinken in a statement Monday. "The goal of these destabilizing operations is to weaken support for democratic governments and principles."

Shor was sentenced in absentia in April to 15 years in jail for his role in the case of 1 billion [US dollars?] that went missing from Moldovan banks in 2014, which severely weakened the country.

The recordings obtained by The Grayzone are all the more shocking when considering that Moldova is enrolled in the US Agency for Aid and International Development (USAID)'s Countering Kremlin Malign Influence (CMKI) program. Under the auspices of USAID, a traditional cutout of US intelligence, countries which once comprised the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact receive vast funding and practical support to supposedly defend themselves from Russian meddling. Cracking down on corruption is one of the initiative's foremost objectives.
An accompanying press release noted the US had provided Chisinau with $320 million over the past nine months, "to address the economic, energy, security, and humanitarian impacts of Russia's war against Ukraine."

This staggering sum follows almost $100 million gifted to Moldova by USAID through the CMKI program between 2017 and 2021, making it the biggest beneficiary.

Moldova To Create 'Anti-Propaganda Centre' to Counter Russian Disinformation

President says new 'informational defence centre' will address Kremlin propaganda aimed at sowing divisions in society and 'weakening trust in our state'.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu on Monday announced the launch of legislative initiatives to create an institution to combat Russian propaganda and better protect citizens from manipulation.

"We must defend Moldova from informational attacks and increase citizens' resistance to misinformation. The national centre for informational defence and combating propaganda - PATRIOT - will have the mission of coordinating the state's policy in informational security and combating disinformation at the national level," Sandu said.

She added that the text of the legislative initiative will be published on Tuesday on the website of the presidency for consultations. The draft bill will be sent to parliament by the end of June.

"Those who launch and spread falsehoods want to cause fear, hatred and division. Day by day, the Kremlin and criminal groups launch hybrid attacks and use the weapon of propaganda to sow hatred in Moldova, to weaken our trust in each other and our trust in our state," Sandu said.

British police detain journalist Kit Klarenberg, interrogate him about The Grayzone, 30 May
war-footing on free press edition
As soon as journalist Kit Klarenberg landed in his home country of Britain on May 17, 2023, six anonymous plainclothes counter-terror officers detained him. They quickly escorted him to a back room, where they grilled him for over five hours about his reporting for this outlet. They also inquired about his personal opinion on everything from the current British political leadership to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

At one point, Klarenberg's interrogators demanded to know whether The Grayzone had a special arrangement with Russia's Federal Security Bureau (FSB) to publish hacked material. During Klarenberg's detention, police seized the journalist's electronic devices and SD cards, fingerprinted him, took DNA swabs, and photographed him intensively. They threatened to arrest him if he did not comply.

Klarenberg's interrogation appears to be London's way of retaliating for the journalist's blockbuster reports exposing major British and US intelligence intrigues. In the past year alone, Klarenberg revealed how a cabal of Tory national security hardliners violated the Official Secrets Act to exploit Brexit and install Boris Johnson as prime minister. In October 2022, he earned international headlines with his exposé of British plans to bomb the Kerch Bridge connecting Crimea to the Russian Federation. Then came his report on the CIA's recruitment of two 9/11 hijackers this April, a viral sensation that generated massive social media attention.

Did Bellingcat get Ukrainian forces killed? (26.04.23)
Criminal charges of treason and abuse of power have been leveled against an unspecified number of Ukrainian servicemen by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). In a bizarre plot to seize Russian aircraft and transfer the planes to Ukraine, the accused soldiers disclosed sensitive information that allowed Moscow to strike an important Ukrainian airfield with a Kalibr missile. A commander was killed, 17 airmen were wounded, two fighter jets destroyed, and "significant damage" was inflicted to the airstrip and several nearby buildings.

Will Ukrainian authorities now level criminal charges against members of Bellingcat, the Western government-funded open source investigations collective, for its role in the connivance? Christo Grozev, the organization's "lead Russia investigator," was inexplicably granted a front row seat to the chicanery by the individuals who attempted to carry it out. [...]

Destruction hard drive of journalists The Guardian and detention journalists at Heathrow airport security: the Snowden leaks.

Revealed: the day Guardian destroyed Snowden hard drives under watchful eye of GCHQ - video

Officials from the British intelligence agency GCHQ raided The Guardian's offices to destroy hard drives related to the newspaper's stories about National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden -- despite the fact that the information had already been disseminated to other sites around the world. In a chilling post today, Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger said the British government has put increasing pressure on editors to surrender all of the information that Snowden provided to the newspaper and its chief reporter on the stories, Glenn Greenwald. Prior to the destruction, an official reportedly told the paper, "You've had your fun. Now we want the stuff back." News of the raid comes a day after Greenwald's partner Miranda was detained for nine hours and questioned under terrorism statutes at Heathrow Airport. [Source: The Verge]

Who needs We The People?

Defense Contractor Funded Think Tanks Dominate Ukraine Debate | Quincy Institute |

Think tanks in the United States are a go-to resource for media outlets seeking expert opinions on pressing public policy issues. But think tanks often have entrenched stances; a growing body of research has shown that their funders can influence their analysis and commentary. This influence can include censorship -- both self-censorship and more direct censoring of work unfavorable to a funder -- and outright pay-for-research agreements with funders. The result is an environment where the interests of the most generous funders can dominate think tank policy debates.

One such debate concerns the appropriate level of U.S. military involvement in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Since Vladimir Putin's illegal and disastrous decision to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the United States has approved approximately $48.7 billion in military spending.1 Despite the very real risk that escalations could lead to direct U.S. military involvement in the war, few think tanks have critically scrutinized this record setting amount of U.S. military assistance.

Within the context of public debate about U.S. military involvement in the Ukraine war, this brief investigates Department of Defense (DoD) and DoD contractor funding of think tanks, those organizations advocacy efforts for policies that would benefit those funders, and the media's predominant reliance on think tanks funded by the defense sector. The analysis finds that the vast majority of media mentions of think tanks in articles about U.S. arms and the Ukraine war are from think tanks whose funders profit from U.S. military spending, arms sales and, in many cases, directly from U.S. involvement in the Ukraine war. These think tanks also regularly offer support for public policy solutions that would financially benefit their funders without disclosing these apparent conflicts of interest.

A fitting follow-up to my recent post on funding of Bellingcat warmongers ... Amsterdam NL sucks. The Hague with Rutte are rightwing war criminals. I grew up with protests "Johnson murderer" which was not permitted at the time to insult a head of state of a friendly nation and ally. Supplemental appropriations also include funds for U.S. European Command operations and related support for the U.S. military. For more, see CRS Insight IN12107, Department of Defense Supplemental Funding for Ukraine: A Summary.

How Watchdogs Are Silenced

Amnesty's partnership with a 'Palantir-powered' think tank

In 2006 when Christopher Darby was announced as the new CEO of the primary venture capital arm of the U.S. Intelligence Community -- In-Q-Tel, Inc. -- he was both a Vice President at chip manufacturer Intel and a senior fellow at then-obscure national security think-tank Center for Advanced Defense Studies. CADS, as it was then known, would later switch its acronym to C4ADS and become a collaborator with Bellingcat and the go-to source for high-profile coverage relating to sanctions on official U.S. adversaries such as China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. (According to an ostensible copy of the center's "Inside the Tank" newsletter", Darby was also the vice chairman of the think tank under founder Newton Howard.)

C4ADS's conflicts of interest resulting from close funding and leadership relationships to U.S. intelligence and special operations are generally omitted when the organization is cited for its expertise on U.S. sanctions or the human rights abuses of U.S. adversaries. But a public audit reveals that roughly 89% of C4ADS's 2021 revenue came directly from the U.S. federal government, including a grant from the U.S. State Department's Bureau of International Security explicitly for "Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act Section 231".

ushmm | Museum Alarmed About Holocaust Scholarship In Poland, 1 June
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is alarmed by the growing trend of attacks on Holocaust scholarship in Poland, which started with threats to historian Barbara Engelking, spread to include her defenders, and recently escalated into a violent assault on historian Jan Grabowski by a parliamentarian as Professor Grabowski attempted to deliver a lecture at the German Historical Institute in Warsaw. The physical attack follows threats to scholars' ability to conduct free and open inquiry into Holocaust history and the weaponization of the Holocaust for political purposes. The Museum calls on all segments of Polish society to support academic freedom and free speech and to condemn all violence related to these pursuits.
[...]
Through the power of Holocaust history, the Museum challenges leaders and individuals worldwide to think critically about their role in society and to confront antisemitism and other forms of hate, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity.

Is it not true that the government of Poland enacted laws 2006-2018 that criminalizd speech implicatng Polish collaboration with the "Third Reich" of Germany? And this same Institute of National Remembrance condemned Ukrainian nationalists collaboration "extermination" of jews and gentiles, 1925-1950? Surely the correct answer would justify contemporary Polish aid to Ukraine and demand for reparation from the BDR, while allaying anxiety of survivors who fled to Poland's Allied nations.

Zelensky unchained: What Ukraine's new political order means for its future | ECFR - Sept. 25, 2019 |

The broader regional and international context is also vital to understanding how Ukraine has developed since the Maidan revolution five years ago. Today, attitudes towards Russia, war, and revolution no longer define everything as they did when the war began in 2014. Negative attitudes towards Russia peaked at 66 percent in 2014-2015, with positive attitudes correspondingly low at 26 percent. Polls show that positive attitudes recovered, however, to 37 percent in 2017; to 48 percent in 2018; and then to 57 percent in 2019.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko discusses President Zelensky's Peace negotiations with Russia - March 21, 2022.

Negotiation is only way out of war, Ukraine's Zelensky says | AFP - March 21, 2022 |

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky renewed his plea for talks with his Russian counterpart, taking to US television to say negotiations were the only way to "end this war."

The reiteration of Zelensky's call for peace talks came as he and other Ukrainians accused Russia of committing war crimes after authorities said the invading forces had bombed a school sheltering some 400 people in the besieged city of Mariupol.

"Russian forces have come to exterminate us, to kill us," said Zelensky.

"If there is just one percent chance for us to stop this war, I think that we need to take this chance... to have the possibility of negotiating, the possibility of talking to Putin," he said.

"Dialogue is the only way out," and "I think it's just the two of us, me and Putin, who can make an agreement on this," Zelensky said.

"If these attempts fail, that would mean that this is a third world war."

Kyiv Says Negotiations With Russia Akin To Capitulation As Ukraine Begins Evacuations From Liberated Areas | RFERL - Nov. 20, 2022 |

Attempts by Western countries to convince Ukraine to negotiate with Moscow after a series of major military victories over invading Russian forces are "bizarre" and effectively ask that Kyiv capitulate to the losing side, according to a key adviser to the Ukrainian president.

"When you have the initiative on the battlefield, it's a little strange to receive proposals like: 'You will not be able to do everything by military means anyway, you need to negotiate,'" AFP on November 20 quoted adviser Mykhaylo Podolyak as saying.

Such talks would mean that the country "that recovers its territories, must capitulate to the country that is losing."

What Is Ruscism? (Ruscism -- Brand New Russian Totalitarianism)

The Verkhovna Rada has adopted a resolution in which it defined the political regime in Russia as ruscist. The term "ruscism" was previously actively used by politicians, scientists, and publicists. It has been in most active use since 2014. The resolution of the Ukrainian Parliament was the world's first regulatory act featuring this term and its definition.

'Ruscism' defined and condemned in Ukraine's official language

The parliament intends to address the Prosecutor General, the Justice Ministry, and other government offices on taking immediate measures against "manifestations of Ruscist ideology and revanchist politics on Ukrainian territory." Its plans also include encouraging the international community to embrace the term "Ruscism" in connection with the current regime in the Kremlin.

In Ukraine, collaboration cases aren't always clear-cut

Some Ukrainians see simply remaining in occupied territory as an act of collaboration.

How Ukraine punishes collaborationism and why changes are needed | May 29, 2023 |

Despite the many years of occupation of Crimea and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, the Ukrainian Criminal Code had no provision on collaboration prior to 2022.

In the interval, law enforcement officers and judges began to receive indictments.

Residents who, for example, helped the Russians hold sham "referendums" were charged with "encroachment on territorial integrity". Charges of "seizure of power" and "participation in a terrorist organisation" were also laid to collaborators.

Not everyone who helped the Russian forces in one way or another falls under these definitions, however, because these all constitute serious crimes that require solid evidence.

"Cooperation at the household level was not criminalised," says Olena Lunova, a human rights activist at the ZMINA Human Rights Center.

Since 2014, there has been growing social demand for the punishment of traitors. Gyunduz Mamedov, who headed the Prosecutor's Office of Crimea in 2016-2019, explains how the law enforcement officers achieved a balance:

"We identified more than 22,000 people who, when the Russian occupation of Crimea began, were working for law enforcement agencies. Many of them remained in their positions and continued to work for the occupying authorities. We began to bring to justice those who participated in the persecution of citizens. For all the others, we waited until something in the law was changed to provide clearer guidelines."

Nazi Symbols on Ukraine's Front Lines Highlight Thorny Issues of History
[...]
The iconography of these groups, including a skull-and-crossbones patch worn by concentration camp guards and a symbol known as the Black Sun, now appears with some regularity on the uniforms of soldiers fighting on the front line, including soldiers who say the imagery symbolizes Ukrainian sovereignty and pride, not Nazism.

In the short term, that threatens to reinforce Mr. PUTIN's PROPAGANDA and giving fuel to his false claims that Ukraine must be "de-Nazified"—a position that ignores the fact that Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensk*, is Jewish. More broadly, Ukraine's ambivalence about these symbols, and sometimes even its acceptance of them, risks giving new, mainstream life to icons that the West has spent more than a half-century trying to eliminate.

"What worries me, in the Ukrainian context, is that people in Ukraine who are in leadership positions, either they don't or they're not willing to acknowledge and understand how these symbols are viewed outside of Ukraine," said Michael Colborne, a researcher at the ["]investigative group["] Bellingcat who studies the international far right. "I think Ukrainians need to increasingly realize that these images undermine support for the country."

Ambassador to Ukraine 2004 Colour Revolution CIA partner

John E. Herbst
Coordinator for Reconstruction and Stabilization,
Term of Appointment: May 26, 2006 to 2009

"We must also improve the responsiveness of our government to help nations emerging from tyranny and war...and that means our government must be able to move quickly to provide needed assistance."
-- President Bush

As Coordinator, Ambassador Herbst is leading the development of U.S. Government civilian capacity to promote the stabilization and reconstruction of societies in transition from conflict or civil strife, and to provide support to countries at risk of instability.

In May 2003, Ambassador Herbst was appointed the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine. During his tenure, he worked to enhance U.S-Ukrainian relations and to help ensure the conduct of a fair Ukrainian presidential election. In Kyiv, he witnessed the Orange Revolution. Prior to that, Ambassador Herbst was the U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan, where he played a critical role in the establishment of an American base to help conduct Operation Enduring Freedom Chaos in Afghanistan. He also promoted improved U.S.-Uzbek relations, in part by encouraging the government in Tashkent to improve its human rights record.

Mr. Herbst previously served as U.S. Consul General in Jerusalem; Principal Deputy to the Ambassador at Large for the Newly Independent States; the Director of the Office of Independent States and Commonwealth Affairs; Director of Regional Affairs in the Near East Bureau; as political counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv and at the Embassies in Moscow and Saudi Arabia.

Neocon Years and NATO Expansion of 2008

Simply more voodoo rhetoric of neoconservatives and the Goldwater girl Hillary Rodham when she took over Foreign Affairs at State.

The United States and the European Union in post-war Kosovo 1999-2012

an analysis of transatlantic peacebuilding approaches

To a unipolar great power like the US at the time, multilateral agreements and institutions were means, not ends. Still, she dismissed the distinction between power politics and policy based on values, stating that this was fine for academic debate, but made disastrous policy.

[...]
Two Bush administrations later in 2008, Rice wrote a Foreign Affairs piece titled 'Rethinking the National Interests: American Realism for a New World'. Because of 9/11, Iraq, Afghanistan and what she described as the destabilizing spill-over effects of globalization, policy shifted to "recognize that democratic state building is now an urgent component of our national interest". The supposed dangers to national security posed by failed, failing or collapsed states allowed for this shift. Running with the characterisation of the US as a reluctant superpower, the US was said to engage in foreign policy "because we have to, not because we want to".

This newfound affinity for democratic statebuilding involved the need to build civilian capacity and an inter-agency `whole of government approach', such as through the State Department creation of S/CRS (Office of the Coordinator for Reconstruction and Stabilization). In meetings, S/CRS chief John Herbst used peacebuilding, stabilization and reconstruction interchangeably, pointing to Kosovo's transition to independent government as a good example of stabilization work. Again, Rice talked about the American history of trying to combine "power and principle - realism and idealism", calling it a "uniquely American realism".

Towards the end of the piece, she situates the uniqueness of this approach in the American "imagination", and their way of thinking, arguing how this accounts for American's uniquely powerful role in the world. In a 2010 Foreign Affairs article, her successor US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton [name can be used interchangeably with John D. Negroponte] also professed the importance of elevating "diplomacy and development alongside defense - a 'smart power' approach". Regardless, self-proclaimed realists such as Stephen M. Walt or John Mearsheimer have been adamant in their criticism of the process of `liberal internationalism', arguing it has had disadvantageous consequences for the US national interest.

Russia, Ukraine, Oil, US Diplomacy - All in One | b @MofA - Jan. 20, 2005 |

The Asian Times then quotes Zbigniew Brzezinski at length. Brzezinski has long been an anti-Russian hawk, and he has always said the prying Ukraine and Russia apart was the best way to permanently weaken Russia, which for him is a worthy strategic goal. The fact that he was an influential player and that he is still part of the establishment does not mean that his advice has been followed.

There is a distinct pattern of US covert actions in changing regimes in Eastern Europe, in the context of this Eurasian strategy of the US, in which Ukraine fits the pattern. The Belgrade vote in 2000 to topple Serbian Slobodan Milosevic was organized and run by US ambassador Richard Miles. This has been well documented by Balkan sources and others. Significantly, the same Miles was then sent to Georgia, where he engineered the toppling of Eduard Shevardnadze in favor of the US-groomed Mikhail Saakashvili last year, another pro-NATO man on Moscow's fringe. James Baker III played a key role as well, as some noted at the time. Now Miles was reportedly involved in Kiev, with the US ambassador there, John Herbst, former ambassador in Uzbekistan. Curious coincidence?

The Ukraine "democratic youth" organization, Pora ("High Time") is a slick, US-created entity. It is modeled on the Belgrade youth group, Otpor, which Miles also set up with help of NED and George Soros' Open Society, USAID and similar friends. Pora was given a brand image, for selling to the Western media, a slick logo of a black-white clenched fist. It even got a nifty name, the "chestnut revolution", as in "chestnuts roasting on an open fire". Before he came to power, Saakashvili was brought by Miles to Belgrade to study the model there. In Ukraine, according to British media and other accounts, Soros' Open Society, the US government's NED and the Carnegie Endowment, along with the State Department's USAID, were all involved in fostering Ukraine regime change. Little wonder Moscow is a bit concerned with Washington's actions in Ukraine.

"If Ukrainian F-16s take off in Poland, Russia will officially declare war on us"

Brekelmans believes in particular that a possible deployment from Polish bases should not be ruled out. Especially considering that the infrastructure at Ukrainian air bases is 'deficient', according to experts. 'If you say that F-16s are only allowed to take off from Ukraine, while getting the airports in order takes more than two years, the conclusion is automatically that no F-16s can be deployed in the coming years. That goes too far for me too.'

He compares it to other Western equipment that Ukraine uses in the war, which is also supplied via Poland. 'We do the maintenance for that, after which the Ukrainians get the equipment back,' he continues. "So we're already going far in that. Of course the disadvantage is that Putin will use that in framing, so we have to weigh that carefully.'

According to De Wijk, however, it is not that easy. On the contrary, he thinks that Poland will become a legitimate target as soon as a plane actually takes off. "If I were Putin, I would think about eliminating an entire base in such a case," De Wijk continues.

NATO turns back to Jens Stoltenberg amid divisions over successor | FT |

Military alliance moves towards extension for longtime secretary-general as leaders struggle to agree replacement

At least another seven months in office would also mean the task of appointing a new secretary-general falls on Biden's leadership of the next summit, to take place in Washington next April, which will come with the added pomp of being the alliance's 75th anniversary.

"We're all aware at some point we'll have to let Stoltenberg go, there will have to be a successor," Kajsa Ollongren, the Dutch defence minister, said on Tuesday, without elaborating on candidates or timeframes.

Stoltenberg, who is set to see key lieutenants leave NATO this summer, is becoming increasingly irritated about being left without a clear message on his future, according to people close to the secretary-general.

Members of his team in Brussels have already taken steps to relocate their families back to their home countries, adding to the complications over his protracted state of limbo.

NATO mulls another succession solution: Pairing with EU top jobs race  | Politico |

A number of capitals also strongly prefer a female candidate. Some EU governments insist that after nearly a decade of a non-EU secretary general, the next chief must come from within the bloc. And for some, it is important for the next chief to come from a country that is serious about defense spending.

Plus, with war raging on the Continent, the job has become far from sensitive -- the next secretary-general needs to be someone acceptable to hawks but who big capitals see as sufficiently cool-headed.

Very few leaders meet the criteria. And a few names who could win broad support -- such as Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte -- have said they are not interested.

Important prerequisite for a successor: denial being a candidate.

Mark Rutte has been at the forefront in fighting the Russians, long before the start of the special military operation. In the year 2014, Rutte played a key role in keeping Ukraine moving towards the EU and the Western alliance.

Most likely for his career and age, politics must be cashed by a next step into corporate business and top income ... he has been a key politician to steer tax dollars towards fossil fuel corporations, financial- and banking institutions.

Vorzeigeprojekt oder nur ein "Haufen Papier"?

Actually, the National Security Strategy should have been there long ago. Today the traffic light government wants to decide it in the cabinet. The paper has already been criticized.

Extended security concept

In December 2021 - weeks before the Russian invasion of Ukraine - the new government promised in the coalition agreement to present a "comprehensive national security strategy" "in the first year" - not a plan spelled out down to the last detail, but common guard rails. Diplomacy, development policy and obligations to NATO, i.e. military engagement, are deliberately mentioned in the same breath. The federal government has an expanded concept of security in mind, which also includes issues such as food security, climate protection and energy issues.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is in charge. The National Security Strategy is to become a flagship project. When the Green Minister spoke of the "longing for freedom" in a keynote speech in March 2022, the world had long since changed. Russian attack on Ukraine. The Chancellor's turning point speech. The Foreign Minister travels across the country to talk to people about their fears and expectations of security.

"Foreign policy from a single source"

But the longer the process lasts, the clearer it becomes that three partners who have different ideas are also negotiating with one another in foreign and security policy. There are also conflicts between individual ministries. The release keeps getting pushed back. From the beginning of 2023 to February. The plan to present the paper to the Munich Security Conference and discuss it internationally there fails.

Shameful ... gross negligence by the Ampel Koalition in Germany ... subservient to Washington DC.

Steinmeier hosted Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang for talks in Berlin

Germany takes aim at China in first national security strategy | EuroNews |

Germany called China a "partner, competitor and systemic rival" in its first national security strategy, accusing Beijing of repeatedly acting against the European giant's interests in a bid to reshape the global order.

The document prepared by Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition slammed China for putting regional stability and international security "under increasing pressure" and for disregarding human rights.

"China is trying in various ways to remould the existing rules-based international order, is asserting a regionally dominant position with ever more vigour, acting time and again counter to our interests and values," the strategy paper said.

At the same time, it acknowledged that the Asian giant "remains a partner without whom many global challenges and crises cannot be resolved".

'Nuclear weapons for all': Belarus leader invites others to join Russian alliance | TOI - May 29, 2023 |

Lukashenko and Putin recently announced deal to transfer Russian nuclear warheads to neighbor's territory

Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, tweeted that Lukashenko's statements indicate that Russia is looking to end global nuclear deterrence and undermine the Global Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which forbids Russia from transferring nuclear weapons to other countries.

Last year, shortly after Russia's invasion of Ukraine began, a referendum was staged in Belarus that removed a constitutional prohibition that forbade the presence of nuclear warheads in Belarusian territory.

Already in March, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that nuclear weapons would be placed in Belarus, saying that "the United States has been doing this for decades. They have long deployed their tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of their allied countries."

In February, Putin suspended Russia's participation in the New START nuclear treaty.

U.S. Completes INF Treaty Withdrawal

Less than one year after President Donald Trump informally announced that the United States would withdraw from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, the State Department announced on Aug. 2 that the move was officially complete. The treaty's death leaves just the 2010 New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) in place to limit U.S. and Russian nuclear weapons deployments, and that pact is due to expire in February 2021.

Russia and Arms Control: Are There Opportunities for the Obama Administration? | US Army War College - March 2009 |

Russo-American relations are generally acknowledged to be at an impasse. Arms control issues feature prominently in that conflicted agenda. Indeed, as of September 2008, the Bush administration was contemplating not just a break in arms talks but actual sanctions, and allowed the bilateral civil nuclear treaty with Russia to die in the Senate rather than go forward for confirmation. Russian spokesmen make clear their belief that American concessions on key elements of arms control issues like missile defenses in Europe are a touchstone for the relationship and a condition of any further progress towards genuine dialogue.

This impasse poses several risks beyond the obvious one of a breakdown in U.S.-Russian relations and the easily foreseeable bilateral consequences. Since the outbreak of the Russo-Georgian war in August 2008, both sides have further hardened positions and raised tensions apart from the war itself and Russia's quite evident refusal to abide by its own cease-fire terms. Nevertheless, for better or worse, arms control and its agenda will remain at the heart of the bilateral Russo-American relationship for a long time. For these reasons, neither the political nor the military aspect can be divorced from the other. And for these same reasons, we cannot refuse to participate in the bilateral effort to resolve those issues.

Putin called attempts to damage the Kremlin and attacks on the Belgorod region a provocation | TASS |

1. Kyiv's attacks on the Kremlin, Belgorod and other regions of Russia with attempts to provoke Russia into powerful retaliatory actions.

  1. Everyone is waiting for us to start pressing buttons, but we will not do this, Kyiv has no military successes. Kyiv must understand that in the event of continued attacks on Russia, the issue of creating a "cordon sanitaire" in Ukraine will be considered.

  2. If we destroyed 5 Patriot complexes near Kiev, then we could destroy any building in the center of Kyiv, but we do not do this.

  3. The West did not want to have a conversation with Russia, but they will, and we'll see.

  4. Russia has no need to use nuclear weapons now. The use of nuclear weapons is theoretically possible if there is a threat to the existence of the Russian Federation.

But Ukraine also deserves respect. Now, on the way to Vilnius, we received signals that certain wording is being discussed without Ukraine.

And I would like to emphasize that this wording is about the invitation to become NATO member, not about Ukraine's membership.

It's unprecedented and absurd when time frame is not set neither for the invitation nor for Ukraine's membership. While at the same time vague wording about "conditions" is added even for inviting Ukraine.

It seems there is no readiness neither to invite Ukraine to NATO nor to make it a member of the Alliance.

Ukraine's Catch-22

Ukraine can get protection from Russia... if they beat Russia first

Today life is imitating fiction in Ukraine. Ukraine desperately wants to join NATO to chase out Russia. But in order to join NATO, they must chase out Russia. This is literally what NATO's quisling leader Jens Stoltenberg is saying

At the Vilnius summit and in preparation for the summit, we are not discussing sending an official invitation. We are discussing how to bring Ukraine closer to NATO. But most importantly, we all agree that the most urgent and important task now is to ensure that Ukraine prevails as a sovereign, independent, democratic nation in Europe. Because unless we do that, unless Ukraine prevails, then there is no issue to be discussed at all related to membership. We all want this war to end. But a just peace cannot mean freezing the conflict and accepting the deal dictated by Russia.

People say Putin denies Ukraine's existence, but here's Stoltenberg denying it himself. He's saying that Ukraine right now does not qualify as an independent state, and unless it 'prevails' as one, then there's no question of joining NATO at all. And yet the very pussy-footing process of joining NATO is what got Ukraine in this mess in the first place.

Ukraine is in this trouble because Russian (ie, neighbor and citizen) friendly governments were couped by America (NATO's boss, which reserves the right to bomb and spy on even NATO members). Ukraine drew/was-dragged closer to NATO, which made Russia about as happy as having the USSR in Cuba. The USSR is gone and America's still mad at Cuba. Having NATO steppe'ing up to its border was well-telegraphed red-line for Russia, which used to be well understood by even imperial warmongers. That was still too much war for them to 'mong.

Joe and Jens want the entrance to the Black Sea,  Crimea and Sevastopol, need to be re-conquered by the UA with max support from NATO countries. The Spring counter-offensive was a complete wash-out.

The decision to provide cluster munitions comes at a critical point in the war, as the Ukrainians have struggled to make major gains in their counteroffensive against Russia.

Zelenskiy fails in effort to secure invitation to join Nato at Vilnius summit | The Guardian |

Leaders of military alliance sign off on declaration that does not give Ukraine firm membership timetable

Zelenskiy said, in a statement issued after the communique: "Today I embarked on a trip here with faith in decisions, with faith in partners, with faith in a strong NATO. In a Nato that does not hesitate, does not waste time and does not look back at any aggressor ... And I would like this faith to become confidence."

The communique's language reflects opposition from Germany and the US that too firm a commitment could prompt an escalation from Russia and, if Ukraine was allowed to join the alliance while the conflict continued, it could ultimately bring Nato into a war against Moscow.

America's Generation Gap on Ukraine | Jan. 24, 2022 |<

In Washington today, if you oppose keeping NATO's doors open to Ukraine you're a bit of a freak. I'm aware of barely any members of Congress, in either party, who hold that view. A decade or two ago, however, it was a position espoused by pillars of the American establishment. What happened? In part, it's a story of generational change. US foreign policy is now dominated by people who came of age in a unipolar world. And that's a dangerous thing.

Kremlin announced grain deal termination | TASS |

The Black Sea agreements have been effectively terminated on Monday -the part of the deal concerning Russia has not been fulfilled, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday.

"The Black Sea agreements are no longer in effect. The deadline, as the Russian president said earlier, is July 17. Unfortunately, the part of the Black Sea agreement that concerns Russia has not yet been fulfilled. As a result, it has been terminated," he said.

"As soon as the Russian part [of the deal] is fulfilled, the Russian side will immediately return to the implementation of this deal," Peskov added.

He also noted that Russia's position on suspending its participation in the grain deal was announced before the most recent terrorist act on the Crimean Bridge and this attack does not influence Moscow's decision.

Infographic - Ukrainian grain exports explained

CNN presentation as if most of the 35 million metric tons of wheat and corn were exported to the developing world. Views and analysis on the grain deal given by CEO of Yara International from Oslo, Norway.

Feeding and Protecting the Planet: Svein Tore Holsether

President and CEO of Yara International Svein Tore Holsether clearly recalls his wake-up call to make combatting climate change the top strategic priority for the Norwegian fertilizer giant.

It came at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris (COP 21), where Holsether was in attendance. More than any of the scientific presentations or climate forecasts, he says he was struck by the determination of world leaders, the involvement of fellow business leaders and, especially, youth engagement.

"I saw that this is going to change how business is run forever. And I also saw what it meant to be in businesses, that we're unprepared for this, that the energy sector was unprepared," he tells The CEO Magazine.

His team has also had to revamp its supply chains as the war in Ukraine left input sources, such as gas and potash from Russia and Belarus, unavailable. It has additionally provoked increased food insecurity as the bounties of Ukraine and Russia previously fed tens-of-millions of people in developing countries.

"This is really a disaster for the world's food supply," Holsether says of the war. "We were integrated as well, but with the war, sanctioned entities and sanctioned people, it has a tremendous impact on the fertilizer business and for us as well."

Feeding the world

Yara International's role in agriculture and feeding a global population of more than eight billion people cannot be understated. Holsether points to a recent World Economic Forum report as validation for the importance of the company in supporting the food system along with its role in combatting climate change.

"The three main topics were food security, climate change and energy transition. And we're in the center of all of this," he says.

Presidents of Poland and Ukraine commemorate WW2 massacre of Poles by Ukrainians

In an important symbolic moment, Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, has joined his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda to mark the 80th anniversary of the Volhynia massacres, during which Ukrainian nationalists murdered up to 100,000 ethnic Poles during World War Two.

The perpetrators of the crimes were the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists - Stepan Bandera's faction, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (OUN-UPA), which was subordinate to it, and the Ukrainian population participating in the murders of their Polish neighbors. The OUN-UPA called its actions an "anti-Polish action." This term concealed the intention which was to murder and expel Poles.

The history of the massacres has regularly caused tension between two otherwise close allies. Poland regards them as a genocide, and has officially recognised them as such, but Ukraine rejects the use of that term.
