Bi-Partisan Effort to Undermine Democracy

After 7 Years, I'm in good company ...

Was clear to me from the start RussiaGate was a fraud initiated by the US (former) Intelligence community, DNC Complex, Hillary & Friends and abuse of power in the branches of U.S. Government.

RussiaGate's Missing Pieces --
What was not said in the Durham Report? | Seymour Hersh |

Durham's 306-page report was made public on May 15, and it pleased no one with its focus on the obvious. The journalist Susan Schmidt, whose by-line was a must-read when she was a reporter for the Washington Post, pointed out on Racket News that Durham said the FBI would have done less damage to its reputation if it had scrutinized the questionable actions of the Clinton campaign in 2016: the Feds "might at least have cast a critical eye on the phony evidence they were gathering."

Schmidt was highlighting a moment in Durham's report where he hints at the real story: RussiaGate was a fraud initiated by the Clinton campaign and abetted by political reporters in Washington and senior FBI officials who chose to look the other way. Durham writes: "In late July 2016, US intelligence agencies obtained insight into Russian intelligence analysis alleging that U.S. Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton had approved a campaign plan to stir up a scandal against US Presidential candidate Donald Trump by tying him to Putin and the Russians' hacking of the Democratic National Committee."

He continues: "this intelligence--taken at face value--was arguably highly relevant and exculpatory because it could be read in fuller context, and in combination with other facts, to suggest that materials such as the Steele Dossier reports and the Alfa Bank allegations . . . were part of a political effort to smear a political opponent and to use the resources of the federal government's law enforcement and intelligence agencies in support of a political objective."

Durham goes on to cite many instances of public statements and private communications of Clinton campaign staffers that were "consistent with the substance of the purported plan." He finds evidence to suggest that "at least some officials within the campaign were seeking information about the FBI's response to the DNC hack, which would be consistent with, and a means of furthering, the purported plan." He adds that "the campaign's funding of the Steele Reports and Alfa Bank allegations . . . provide some additional support for the credibility to the information set forth in the Clinton Plan intelligence."

However, his report focuses on who knew about the Clinton Plan intelligence and when they knew of it, while "the details of the Clinton Plan intelligence," "facts that heightened the potential relevance of this intelligence to" Durham's inquiry, and his team's "efforts to verify or refute the key claims found in this intelligence" are confined to a Classified Appendix.

It became evident to some members of Durham's staff that the real story was not about whether or not Trump had pee parties in a Moscow hotel room--one of the headline-producing allegations in the Steele Dossier that consumed the Washington press corps in the aftermath of Trump's victory in the 2016 election. The issue was whether the Clinton campaign, in its constant leaking of false accusations and false data, had crossed a line.

The investigation in U.S. Congress was by design "tunnel vision" to search for evidence in relation to Russia, not Ukraine (favoring the election of a Democrat) and not Israel and Arab states angered by the Obama/Biden nuclear agreement with Iran, so-called JCPOA to stop uranium enrichment and the development of a nuclear weapon.

Contempt of Congress a Bi-partisan Disease on the Hill

Comer & Grassley to Wray: Provide the Unclassified Documents or Face Contempt

"Today, FBI Director Wray confirmed the existence of the FD-1023 form alleging then-Vice President Biden engaged in a criminal bribery scheme with a foreign national. However, Director Wray did not commit to producing the documents subpoenaed by the House Oversight Committee. While Director Wray - after a month of refusing to even acknowledge that the form existed - has offered to allow us to see the documents in person at FBI headquarters, we have been clear that anything short of producing these documents to the House Oversight Committee is not in compliance with the subpoena. If the FBI fails to hand over the FD-1023 form as required by the subpoena, the House Oversight Committee will begin contempt of Congress proceedings," said Chairman Comer (R-Ky).

"While the FBI has apparently leaked classified information to the news media in recent weeks, jeopardizing its own human sources, it continues to treat Congress like second class citizens by refusing to provide a specific unclassified record. Director Wray confirmed what my whistleblowers have told me pursuant to legally protected disclosures: the FBI-generated document is real, but the bureau has yet to provide it to Congress in defiance of a legitimate congressional subpoena. This failure comes with consequences," Senator Grassley (R-Iowa) said.

The 'Washington Post' 'Blacklist' Story Is Shameful and Disgusting | RollingStone - Nov. 18, 2016 |

A technology reporter for the Washington Post named Craig Timberg ran an incredible story. It has no analog that I can think of in modern times. Headlined "Russian propaganda effort helped spread `fake news' during election, experts say," the piece promotes the work of a shadowy group that smears some 200 alternative news outlets as either knowing or unwitting agents of a foreign power, including popular sites like Truthdig and Naked Capitalism.

Did Intelligence Officials Politicize Russiagate?

A recent series of articles in the Columbia Journalism Review details a "symbiotic relationship" between the media and the intelligence community | by Michael J. Ard - March 10, 2023 |

In his critique of the media's performance on "Russiagate" for the Columbia Journalism Review, journalist Jeff Gerth provides a detailed account of shoddy reporting, confirmation bias and wishful thinking, especially from The New York Times. Although not the main focus of Gerth's expose, the intelligence community's performance also comes under scrutiny in this account. Indeed, his story reveals the "symbiotic relationship between the media and the national security apparatus," especially the mutual reliance on leaks and "anonymous sources" and "senior U.S. government officials."

But more significantly, Gerth's article underscores how central to the Russiagate story was the fateful decision by intelligence community leadership to give credence to the "Steele Dossier," opposition research commissioned by Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign aimed at disparaging her rival Donald Trump.

That summer, former acting CIA director Michael Morell, a Clinton ally, asserted that Putin had recruited Trump as "an unwilling agent of the Russian federation." At roughly the same time, FBI director James Comey launched a counterintelligence investigation of the Trump campaign, known as "Crossfire Hurricane."

[...]

The CIA would lead the analysis, with contributions from the FBI and NSA, and directed by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). Shortly after work began, a government official leaked to The Washington Post that this Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) would state that Russia wanted Trump to win. Initially, Gerth notes, the FBI believed Russian hacking intended to disrupt the election rather than support a specific candidate, a typical Russian "active measures" or disinformation campaign.

On January 6, 2017, at Trump Tower in Manhattan, three intelligence chiefs and director of national intelligence, James Clapper, briefed President-elect Trump on Russia's attempt to disrupt the election for his benefit. Gerth reports the FBI wanted the dossier's reporting included in the ICA, but the CIA had reservations. CIA director John Brennan claimed it didn't inform the report's analytic judgments, although NSA director Mike Rogers acknowledged the dossier was included in the intelligence product's review. An unclassified version of the ICA was released the same day with the same conclusions.

President-elect Trump had welcomed intelligence community briefings, despite his public criticism of some of its past conclusions and controversies. In his insightful book "Getting To Know the President," respected CIA historian and former agency Inspector General John Helgerson relates how Trump in the briefing respectfully acknowledged the ICA's message that Russia attempted to interfere with the election.

In a follow-on private meeting with Trump, Comey briefed the president-elect on the Steele dossier itself, which claimed, among other things, that Trump had worked closely with Moscow to discredit Clinton. In his memoir "A Higher Loyalty," Comey believed he had a duty to warn Trump about the contents. This was a fateful decision, because it is clear from Gerth's and Helgerson's accounts that Trump's reaction to the dossier soured his relationship with the intelligence community.

Solidifying behind Clinton, foreign policy establishment gins up a cold war with Russia/Iran | Mondoweiss - August 2016 |

The foreign policy establishment is realigning itself in anticipation, and support, of a Hillary Clinton administration. With Donald Trump self-destructing at last, this process involves a rightwing-center solidification upon the belief that Russia is the new American enemy in the Middle East. A couple of Clinton endorsers have all but called for war with Russia and Iran, one of them saying the U.S. should be killing Russians in Syria.
