Battle for  Maaloula

Under cover of US air power, will Arab Forces capture IS capital Raqqa? | Feb. 14, 2016 |<

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the US-led coalition are competing in a race for Raqqa, because the stakes are very high; to restore Syria's sovereignty, the SAA should be the first to expel Daesh from the eastern Syrian city.

"Tell Me How This Ends"
America's muddled involvement with Syria | Harper Magazine - Feb. 2019 |

The mandarins' disclosures, along with their published memoirs and position papers, made me sympathetic to the Trump staffer's claim that the Obama team left nothing to clarify its Syria strategy. In fact, there was no strategy. There were debates, options, discussions, anguish, orders, counterorders, and actions. In his recent book on his years as Obama's deputy national security adviser, The World As It Is, Ben Rhodes portrayed White House deliberations as group therapy more than strategic planning. "I felt the burden on Obama," he wrote, one of many examples of his and his colleagues' feelings overshadowing circumstances. "He had to respond to this awful event in Syria while bearing the additional weight of the war in Iraq. . . . " But isn't that a president's job?

The men and women around Obama's conference tables and via video links claimed that, more than anything else, they wanted to do the right thing. In Rhodes's case, anything. "Even though I had misgivings about our Syria policy," he wrote, "I was glad we were doing something." Obama's strategists sought to make Syria better. As they admit now, they didn't.

With Both Feet in Syrian Quagmire   | @BooMan - Years 2013-2018 |

The NATO Summit of Bucharest in 2008 was in fact a Declaration of War on the Russian Federation. That line of war narrative from the Western alliance is very clear and I have written about the historical facts to unwind the propaganda from the White House, U.S. Congress, CIA, Pentagon and NATO HQ in Brussels, the heart of the European Union. We are One in the sense of the EU has become the Trojan Horse of Pax Americana, to rule the world as in the best days of Christian led colonialism to discover the New World, destroy its indigenous culture and people (savages). See even the Amazon today and description of EU top diplomat us v. them or the European garden and savages from the jungle.

God is not Dead.

God has always been abused to subdue native people and lead at the tip of the lance and swords of the Conquistadores to plunder precious minerals across the Andes and Rocky Mountain ranges in North and South America ... when is it enough I always wondered out loud.

In American pure capitalism it is NEVER enough ... today's goal in life of the individual and a nation: law of nature ... seek prey and devour it, or risk to become prey yourself.

Reading through the remarks of Jens Stoltenberg, there is "clear-eyed" vision inside the military might of NATO [re: United States] to declare war on China, as the rightwing forces would prefer to put the communist symbolism on New China: the CCP. A decade of all out war on the Left, Socialism and piecemeal leftovers of Communism.

I came across the NATO press conference of the Madrid Summit. How fitting, the capital of the Franco regime ... the general would be proud, his children Barroso, Borrell et all. Never forget Spain hosting the last meeting before the invasion of Iraq by U.S. and UK allied forces in defiance of the UN Charter and every conceivable International treaty or law. Destruction, murder and rampage with impunity. Same politicians still present to set policy to confront Russia and China.

Jens in Madrid and Antony in Beijing with a "clear-eyed" vision of war

I hate the expression "clear-eyed" as NATO SG uses it in every meeting with the press to lay out the NATO narrative of the War in Ukraine.

NATO needs to be "clear-eyed" about potential threat posed by China, Stoltenberg says in Madrid.

Speech by NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană followed by Q&A session at the 2023 Spring Session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly - May 23, 2023

Since 2014, when Putin illegally annexed Crimea, our Alliance has implemented the biggest reinforcement of our collective defence in generations. [Minks Agreement was a decoy to strengthen our hold on the Ukraine]

We've increased the readiness of all forces, deployed combat ready troops to the east of the Alliance. For the first time, we activated our defence planning and European Allies and Canada have spent an additional $350 billion on defence. This meant that when Mr. Putin launched his fully-fledged invasion last year, we were ready. [deputy Mircea you left out "unprovoked" ... because it wasn't unprovoked at all ... decades of setting NATO's targets]

Within hours we activated our defence plans, put 40,000 troops under NATO command, backed by significant air and maritime power. We strengthened our forward defences from the Baltic to the Black Sea. This is to send a crystal-clear message to whom it may concern that we'll defend every square inch of NATO territory - that there can be no risk of misunderstanding or miscalculation. Our security environment is fundamentally changed. High intensity warfare is back in Europe.

Global competition is rising. Authoritarian regimes are challenging our values, our interests and our security. And the threats are multiplying. From terrorist to cyberattacks to nuclear proliferation to climate change. We have entered, my dear friends, the new era of strategic competition

NATO is up to the challenge. We will train and exercise more together. Place more forces on higher readiness and strengthen our command and control structure. I expect Allies to support the plans, forces and structures set out by our Supreme Allied Commander General Cavoli at the Vilnius Summit this coming July.

I'm very glad to see that several Allies, including the US, Norway, France and others have already signed new contracts with the defence industry.

We will also welcome again, in Vilnius, European Union leadership and our Indo-Pacific partners, at the highest level. Because security is indivisible. What happens today in Europe, can [or will] happen tomorrow in Asia. We need to be careful not to swap one dependency on one authoritarian regime for another. Most notably China.

Chinese rare-earth materials are present everywhere in our societies, our economies. We cannot give authoritarian regimes the chance to exploit our vulnerabilities. And undermine us. But let me be clear. China is not our adversary. We still trade with China. We engage with them on issues such as arms-controls or climate change. But we have to be clear-eyed that China does not share our values of freedom, democracy and human rights. And that poses a challenge to our interests and to our security. China's increasingly close relationship with Russia is also a serious cause for concern. As are its attempts to control key industrial sectors and our critical infrastructure.

The Fall and Rise of NATO | Sydney Morning Herald |

All values post World War II that devastated nations and people across the globe, was part of my rearing at home, in schools and my education in St. Louis MO in the States. Little or none of those values are part of new generation of politicians today. The old men in Washington DC are attempting the continue a fight for full global dominance and continue where the Hiroshima atomic bombs ended the horrific war in the Pacific.

After the fall of Communism in Europe in 1989, apparently the fascist line dating back to the 193Is in America has returned in a sublime state for reeducation of the masses (1984) , a slow but steady process. Made possible after the 9/11 attacks on America, revamping the military, building alliances and expanding NATO as proxy.

The era of Middle East wars planned by neoconservative forces in Washington DC and Jerusalem, brought made countries in its knees. The influx of asylum seekers and refugees induced a rightwing populist movement (fascist) across Europe. The division between Old and New Europe was handily exploited by the politicians in the U.S. Spreading democracy was the cover for regime change and military intervention ... the names of the architects came from both Republicans and Democrats. McCain, Lieberman, Bolton, Clintons, Albright, Kissinger, and unsurprising Joe Biden.

The warnings from Dwight Eisenhower were never heeded, to the contrary after 2000 Big Tech was incorporated in to the war machine of MIC. Seen the benefits during popular uprising in former Soviet satellite states and the Arab nations in 2011.

In today's hybrid warfare, Big Tech is wielding a very big stick and actively is participating in the bloodshed on the battlefield in Syria, Iraq, Libya and the Ukraine.

To preserve autonomy and sovereignty, the world has split into a fortified alliance around NATO and the nations of the South (economic battlefield for minerals) and the Far East with China leading. Central Asia was up for grabs, but after retreat from Afghanistan after 20 years of war, and the defiant state of Türkiye 🇹🇷, it appears the regional powers with Russia and China in Xinjiang will earn the prize of relations with dictators in Central Asia. Watching the development of SCO and the BRICS States as a counterweight to Western aggression and neo-colonialism.

Breaking down the structure of the United Nations brick for brick ...

President Appoints John Bolton as Ambassador to the United Nations | The Roosevelt Room - Aug. 1, 2005 |

The United States Senate held thorough confirmation hearings, and a majority of United States senators agree that he is the right man for the job. Yet, because of partisan delaying tactics by a handful of senators, John was unfairly denied the up or down vote that he deserves.

As a result, America has now gone more than six months without a permanent ambassador to the United Nations. This post is too important to leave vacant any longer, especially during a war and a vital debate about U.N. reform. So today I've used my constitutional authority to appoint John Bolton to serve as America's Ambassador to the United Nations. John Bolton will be an important member of my State Department team, led by Condoleezza Rice.

I'm sending Ambassador Bolton to New York with my complete confidence. Ambassador Bolton believes passionately in the goals of the United Nations Charter, to advance peace and liberty and human rights. His mission is now to help the U.N. reform itself to renew its founding promises for the 21st century. He will speak for me on critical issues facing the international community. And he'll make it clear that America values the potential of the United Nations to be a source of hope and dignity and peace.

As he embarks on his new assignment, Ambassador Bolton will bring tremendous wisdom and expertise. Over the past two decades, John Bolton has been one of America's most talented and successful diplomats. He's been a tireless defender of our nation's values, and a persuasive advocate for freedom and peace.

US President Barack Obama said Syria's civil war would not end unless President Bashar al-Assad leaves power, discounting suggestions the middle eastern leader could take part in future elections.

Russia, Syrian regime, Turkey, Iran to hold another round of Astana talks | The New Arab - June 13, 2023 |

Neocon president Joe Biden says Russian president Putin has no future ...both men claim to be very "religious", the one Orthodox Catholic, his adversary Russian Orthodox Church ... both "leaders" claim they are supportive of Israel and support the Jewish people ... are welcome guests in Jerusalem. Contrary to Joe, Vlad claims to get along well with the minority Muslim people across the Russian Federation, build the great mosque in Moscow. America and Israel benefit from xenophobia and Islamophobia ... both states do not represent human rights or claim to "moral values." Not on my watch.

President Biden on Vladimir Putin:
"For God's sake, this man cannot remain in power."

Joe the master of historic lies and utter bull$hit ... may both men burn in hell In sha'Allah

Just had Biden's speech running in the background ... heard him utter the words: "let's be clear-eyed ..." fu*king antagonist.

Censorship of opposing views Joe, and still can't win your dirty wars of conquest ... all you can do is provoke adversaries and competitors into another war to create chaos and misery.

The Ukraine War Was Provoked - & Why That Matters To Achieve Peace

President Bill Clinton's Secretary of Defense William Perry considered resigning in protest against NATO enlargement. In reminiscing about this crucial moment in the mid-1990s, Perry said the following in 2016:

"Our first action that really set us off in a bad direction was when NATO started to expand, bringing in eastern European nations, some of them bordering Russia. At that time, we were working closely with Russia and they were beginning to get used to the idea that NATO could be a friend rather than an enemy ... but they were very uncomfortable about having NATO right up on their border and they made a strong appeal for us not to go ahead with that."

In 1998, William Burns, then the U.S. ambassador to Russia and now the C.I.A. director, sent a cable to Washington warning at length of grave risks of NATO enlargement:

"Ukraine and Georgia's NATO aspirations not only touch a raw nerve in Russia, they engender serious concerns about the consequences for stability in the region. Not only does Russia perceive encirclement, and efforts to undermine Russia's influence in the region, but it also fears unpredictable and uncontrolled consequences which would seriously affect Russian security interests. Experts tell us that Russia is particularly worried that the strong divisions in Ukraine over NATO membership, with much of the ethnic-Russian community against membership, could lead to a major split, involving violence or at worst, civil war. In that eventuality, Russia would have to decide whether to intervene; a decision Russia does not want to have to face."

Ukraine's leaders knew clearly that pressing for NATO enlargement to Ukraine would mean war. Former Zelensky adviser Oleksiy Arestovych declared in a 2019 interview "that our price for joining NATO is a big war with Russia."

During 2010-2013, Yanukovych pushed neutrality, in line with Ukrainian public opinion. The U.S. worked covertly to overthrow Yanukovych, as captured vividly in the tape of then U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nulandand U.S. Ambassador Geoffrey Pyattplanning the post-Yanukovych government weeks before the violent overthrow of Yanukovych.

Nuland makes clear on the call that she was coordinating closely with then Vice President Biden and his national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, the same Biden-Nuland-Sullivan team now at the center of U.S. policy vis-à-vis Ukraine

During the talks, we continued to exchange views on the proposals regarding long-term legally binding security guarantees, which Russia has made to the United States and NATO. I would like to remind everyone that these proposals include three key points: NATO's non-expansion, non-deployment of offensive weapon systems near the Russian border, and the return of the bloc's European capabilities and infrastructure to the 1997 level, when the NATO-Russia Founding Act was signed.

From Madrid to Brussels: Perspectives on NATO Enlargement | US Army War College - January 1997 |
By Stephen J. Blank

When we think about European security, no question is more basic or more complex than that of NATO enlargement. In July 1997, members of NATO will convene in Madrid and decide to invite a number of Central and/or East European states to begin
accession talks with NATO, leading to their full membership in 1999. While it is not certain who the invited states will be, there are good grounds for listing Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic as reasonable certainties. Slovenia and Romania are also increasingly mentioned as possibilities. NATO's decision in Madrid will have immense repercussions for Europe, not just for NATO's current members, or for the new candidates, but also for the states not invited. Those presumably include Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Bulgaria, Albania, the states emerging out of the former Yugoslavia, and the European neutrals: Finland, Sweden, and Austria, and the Baltic states. Michael Flynn, General Chaos | The New Yorker - Feb. 18, 2017 |

What the removal of Flynn as the national-security adviser reveals about Donald Trump's White House.

In mid-June, 2010, the magazine piece, "The Runaway General," appeared. McChrystal was quoted calling Vice-President Joe Biden "shortsighted" for his opposition to the surge in Afghanistan; one aide mocked Biden as "Bite Me"; and another aide dismissed Jim Jones, Obama's first national-security adviser, as a "clown." Obama fired McChrystal the day after publication. Flynn chafed at the decision. "It's hard to see someone you know have to go through that," a close associate of Flynn's told me. "You don't heal from that overnight."

Flynn prepared to leave Afghanistan, as McChrystal's successor, David Petraeus, brought in his own staff. Before Flynn departed, he stopped by the Joint Intelligence Operations Center to say goodbye. Speaking to dozens of analysts, Flynn delivered a forty-five-minute lesson, covering some of the bloodiest engagements in American history: the Battle of Antietam, in 1862, when twenty-three thousand people were killed or wounded in a single day; Operation Torch, in 1942, when several hundred soldiers died establishing beachheads in North Africa as part of the Allied invasion. "His point was that no one in Washington can ever appreciate what is happening on the battlefield, and that there aren't as many Americans dying now as before," the intelligence analyst who worked with Flynn said. "But it was confusing, and these would be the same kind of discussions you'd have with him about the nature of the insurgency--you'd leave his office and spend an hour trying to figure out what he was trying to say."

[...]

Ledeen's hope had been to stir up dissent inside Iran through Ghorbanifar's network of influential contacts, according to the Presidential commission that investigated the affair. (Ledeen disputes this.) Instead, Ghorbanifar wound up as the middleman in the sale of weapons to Iran, in exchange for Tehran's assistance in freeing American hostages held by Iranian-backed Islamists in Lebanon. But Ledeen's zeal for regime change in Iran remained undiminished. After the U.S. invasion of Iraq, he called for American forces to press on, into Iran. "As Ronald Reagan once said, `America is too great a country to settle for small dreams,' " he wrote, in 2002. Iraq was a distraction; Iran was "the real war."

Flynn, too, increasingly viewed Iran as a great menace. In Iraq, he had seen scores of young Americans killed by sophisticated armor-piercing explosives, supplied to Shiite militias by the Quds Force, an élite unit of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Flynn and Ledeen became close friends; in their shared view of the world, Ledeen supplied an intellectual and historical perspective, Flynn a tactical one. "I've spent my professional life studying evil," Ledeen told me. Flynn said, in a recent speech, "I've sat down with really, really evil people"--he cited Al Qaeda, the Taliban, Russians, Chinese generals--"and all I want to do is punch the guy in the nose."

A bit of reflection for the US military would be very welcome ... passed the point of no return however. The Military, Intelligence and Big Tech (Corporations) running policy in Washington DC and the White House. The military are career men, politicians set goals for the next mid-term or presidential election. America's Enduring Wars bring less freedom and destroys democracy.

1980 to 1988: Chemical Weapons and the Iran-Iraq War

Beginning in 1983, Iran suffered the effects of increasingly effective Iraqi CW attacks, which initially involved blister agents (e.g. mustard gas), but later included nerve agents such as tabun and possibly sarin. 8 Estimates of the number of Iranian casualties from Iraqi CW use are not definitive, but the Iranian estimate is 60,000 casualties.

The weak international response, particularly by the United Nations, to Iraqi use of chemical weapons against Iranian forces left Iran increasingly bitter about what it perceived to be a double standard in the enforcement of international agreements.

Ukraine says suspect directed Russia missile attack in Kramatorsk | Al Jazeera |

Ukraine's President Zelenskyy says man who allegedly `spotted' for Russian forces attack on restaurant military to be charged with treason.

Ukrainian security officials said the man it arrested, an employee of a fuel transportation company, was suspected of filming the restaurant target for Russian forces and informing them about its popularity. [??]

"The Security Service of Ukraine together with the police special forces detained the person who coordinated this terrorist attack," Zelenskyy said in his nightly address to the nation.

"Everyone who helps Russian terrorists destroy life deserves the maximum punishment. And this applies not only to some collaborators. The spotter is being charged with treason. The possible punishment is life imprisonment.

Accomplices of a terrorist state must be treated as betrayers of humanity," he added, warning that more bodies may yet be found beneath the rubble.

h/t MoA Ukraine's Zaluzhny Is Back And Asking For More Weapons

During the month the Russian air defense claimed to have shot down 15 Ukraine planes, 5 helicopters, 200 HIMARS and 20 Storm Shadow 'wonder weapon' missiles. Those numbers do not include the significant damage Russia has done to defense repair shops, weapon and ammunition depots all over Ukraine with its constant long range missile attacks.

In total the Ukraine lost in one month more than Zaluzhny requested back in December and more than it has received during the time since.

In the Washington Post Zaluzhny is back and begging for more weapons.

Ukraine's top general, Valeri Zaluzhnyi, wants shells, planes and patience - WP | Thru MaidanPress Kyiv |

For Ukraine's counteroffensive to progress faster, the country needs more of every weapon, including Western fighter jets.

Zaluzhnyi says the Ukrainian troops have been outshot tenfold at times because of limited resources, although they should be firing at least as many artillery shells as the Russians.

The Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief also highlighted the military doctrines of NATO and Russia, both calling for air superiority before launching ground-based deep-reaching operations. He says that a limited number of Western fighter jets would be enough for Ukraine:

"Because there is no other way. Because the enemy is using a different generation of aviation. It's like we'd go on the offensive with bows and arrows now," he said.

Last week, President Zelenskyy warned of a potential "terrorist act with the release of radiation" by Russian forces at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, Europe's largest atomic power station. Also, one worst-case scenario Zaluzhnyi must consider is the threat that Russia might deploy a nuclear weapon.

The Washington Post asked General Zaluzhnyi if that gives him pause from trying to regain control of the nuclear plant during the counteroffensive, he replied:

The interview never took place as Zaluzhnyi is being treated in Berlin, in coma or perhaps deceased.

Excellent write-up by AI and part of Deep Fake in war propaganda. The phrase: "Europe's largest atomic power station" is one give-away. Zaluzhnyi cannot be blamed for the harsh criticism and is a-political as he already attained the hero status on the level of Stepan Bandera.

The so-called interview lacks cohesion ... machine made.

Following his visit to the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi visited Russia's Kaliningrad for talks with Rosatom officials. Rosatom's press service said that Grossi and Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev discussed safety measures at the plant.

Revealed: UK plans to drop flagship £11.6bn climate pledge | The Guardian |

A leaked briefing note to ministers, given to the Foreign Office and seen by the Guardian, lays out reasons for dropping the UK's contribution to meeting the global $100bn (£78.6bn) a year commitment to developing countries.

It says: "Our commitment to double our international climate finance to £11.6bn was made in 2019, when we were still at 0.7 [% of GDP spent on international aid] and pre-Covid." It adds that to meet it by the deadline would be a "huge challenge" because of new pressures, including help for Ukraine being included in the aid budget.

It also claimed that factors such as Ukraine and debt relief could make it even more difficult to meet the target. This is because the government has cut international aid spending to 0.5% of gross national income since the announcement was made, squeezing budgets across the board, and because ministers did not spend most of the money allocated to the climate fund over the past few years, leaving the majority to be spent by 2026.

The UK spent £5.8bn over the previous five years up to 2021. This was doubled, to spend £11.6bn

between April 2021 and March 2026, £3bn of which was earmarked for protecting and restoring nature for meeting commitments made in Cop15 last December.

The projects funded include building renewable energy, helping create low-pollution transport and protecting forests in sensitive areas around the globe.

Former Foreign Office minister Zac Goldsmith, who resigned last week  citing what he termed Sunak's "apathy" towards the environment, said this would "shred" the UK's international reputation.

Why did Stanford students host a group of neo-Nazis? | The Forward |

Conversations about white supremacy in America today typically center on right-wing media and incendiary politicians who blast out racist dog whistles.

But hate doesn't need demagogues to get mainstreamed; it has also found an outlet at elite universities.

On June 29, Stanford University hosted a delegation from the Azov Brigade, a neo-Nazi formation in the Ukrainian National Guard. The panel, during which Azov's neo-Nazi insignia was projected onto the wall, was attended by noted political scientist Francis Fukuyama, who posed for a photograph with the delegation.

"On June 30 2023 Azov delegation had another visit to Stanford University.
This time Azov Nazis led by Arseniy Fedosiuk were welcomed by Francis Fukuyama, a neocon turned liberal.

This event -- and the disturbing lack of reaction from Jewish organizations -- showcases the limits of America's commitment to combating white supremacy.

  • There are significant risks to the decarbonization trajectory due to the conflict in Ukraine and the ensuing energy crisis in Europe. Further risks are posed by global energy price volatility, along with the cost-of-living crisis facing economies and the implications of interest rate rises on investment in building decarbonization from governments, households and businesses.

Holocaust Amnesia: The Ukrainian Diaspora and the Genocide of the Jews

    Grzegorz Rossoliński-Liebe
German Yearbook of Contemporary History, Volume 1, 2016, pp. 107-143 (Article)

    INTRODUCTION

Over one and a half million Ukrainian Jews fell victim to the Holocaust between the summer of 1941 and the spring of 1944. The majority of them were shot near their homes or ghettos by German Kommandos and local collaborators. Many Ukrainians were witnesses to this genocide or participated in the persecution and murder of their Jewish neighbors. Nonetheless, in the collective memory of the Ukrainian diaspora, which has produced an extensive body of literature, the Holocaust remained almost completely in the dark, unmentioned. Because of the inaccessibility of Soviet archives as well as a tendency among historians to concentrate on official records, this lapse in memory has not become a subject of historical research until recently.

At the same time, Holocaust research focused mainly on German perpetrators and frequently refused to take notice of reports and memoirs left by survivors because of their allegedly disputed use within the historical discipline. The published works of historians such as Philip Friedman, Shmuel Spector, and Eliyahu Yones, who were themselves Holocaust survivors and who did not neglect non-German perpetrators, received little attention from German and North American specialists of Ukrainian history and scholars of National Socialism. Only in recent years has a scholarly debate turned its attention to this blind spot in the memory of the Ukrainian diaspora and to the narrative that was constructed by it.

Because of personal experiences and firsthand knowledge, the genocide of the Jews was present in the personal memories of Ukrainian exiles from the beginning. In the spring and summer of 1944, 120,000 Ukrainians who had been either witnesses to, collaborators in, or perpetrators of the extermination of their Jewish neighbors, retreated with German soldiers and administrative functionaries. However, during the Cold War, the Holocaust was only openly discussed in émigré communities when specific people were prosecuted on account of real or suspected war crimes, or when Soviet propaganda branded Ukrainians living in exile as collaborators.

This essay will provide a brief outline of the Holocaust in Ukraine while also discussing the participation of Ukrainians in the genocide of the Jewish people. In doing so, it will concentrate on western Ukraine (eastern Galicia and Volhynia), where, in contrast to central, southern, and eastern Ukraine, more Jews lived and more were murdered. The Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (Orhanizatsiia Ukraїns'kykh Natsionalistiv, OUN) was also based in eastern Galicia and Volhynia, as was its military arm, established in early 1943, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (Ukraїns'ka Povstans'ka Armiia, UPA). Their participation in the Holocaust is particularly interesting given that their relationship with Nazi Germany was at times openly hostile.

It will be discussed below why and under what circumstances Ukrainians were forcibly or voluntarily moved during the course of the Second World War to Germany, where after the war some of them lived in Displaced  Persons (DP) camps. Some of them were later relocated to various countries in the West, where they established political-cultural associations for children, youths, and adults, political organizations, holiday camps that specialized in advancing the ideology of Ukrainian nationalism, as well as publishing houses and newspapers. Together, these activities were used to shape the self-image of the Ukrainian diaspora with lasting effect.

The principle part of this article will examine the two most important phases during which the Ukrainian diaspora's memory of the Second World War and the Holocaust were constructed. The early construction of memory that developed during the latter stages of the Second World War and the early stages of the Cold War will be covered first. In this period, a narrative was established that would be adapted and readapted to suit political circumstances during the course of the Cold War will be covered first. In this period, a narrative was established that would be adapted and readapted to suit political circumstances during the course of the Cold War. However, at no point did this narrative lose its semantic core or its ideological orientation.

Thereafter, different forms of memory will be presented that developed in the later stages of the Cold War, primarily during the 1980s. The essay will examine the memory of the 1960s and 1970s only in passing, instead switching back and forth between the early and late phases of the Cold War so as to show, first, how durable and enduring the memory that was developed at the end of the Second World War truly was, and second, how, after two decades of stagnation, this narrative returned to a central place in the life of the diaspora, blossoming into powerful forms of memory and ritual.

    The Holocaust in Western Ukraine

In contrast to Western Europe, in Ukraine the extermination of Jews was usually carried out in the open. The majority of Ukrainian Jews were killed in the immediate vicinity of their homes, not transported into the unknown in trains. It was above all in western Ukraine where non-Jewish locals perceived the Holocaust, given that their Jewish neighbors were, before their very eyes, murdered during pogroms, relocated to Ghettos (in which case local Ukrainians frequently faced pleas from Jews to watch over their property), killed in one of the many mass shootings near their homes, or massacred shortly before the arrival of the Red Army during the final stages of the Holocaust by the Germans, the Ukrainian police, or local peasants in forests or other places where the Jews had been hiding.

At the time of Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, 2.7 million Jews lived in the territory that today constitutes the Ukrainian state. Of these, approximately 1.6 million were murdered, either by Germans and their collaborators, or by Ukrainians working independently of the German occupying forces. Roughly 100,000 Jews survived the Holocaust in hiding, while approximately 900,000 Jews, predominantly those living in eastern Ukraine, fled with the Red Army into the interior of the Soviet Union during the opening stages of the war, thereby managing to save themselves. The majority of Jews in Ukraine who were killed stemmed from the western parts of the country, especially eastern Galicia and Volhynia, which were the regions with the highest Jewish population density.

CIA Report details ties between US and ex-Nazis | AP News / JPost - Dec. 2010 |

Files show US intelligence officials made efforts to protect Mykola Lebed, Ukrainian Nazi collaborator, in order to get information.

The report, titled "Hitler's Shadow: Nazi War Criminals, US Intelligence, and the Cold War," draws from an unprecedented trove of records that the CIA was persuaded to declassify, and from more than 1 million digitized Army intelligence files that had long been inaccessible. Among other things, the authors say, the files also show that:

-- US intelligence officials used and protected ex-Nazis during the Cold War to a greater extent than previously known.

    [...]

Elizabeth Holtzman, a former Democratic congresswoman from New York who fought for the disclosure of Nazi files, welcomed the release.

"This is a difficult, and in some respects shameful, chapter in American history," she said. "It was not known to the public, and I think it's a mark of governmental courage and of national courage to take this era and these documents and say, 'We want to learn the truth about what our government did,' and to do it in a way that was professional and serious."

The US government relocated Lebed to New York City in 1949, where he was safe from assassination, the report says. Through his CIA-funded organization, Prolog, he gathered intelligence on the Soviets into at least the late 1960s. In 1991, he was still considered a valuable asset to the agency, the report says.

Lebed was eventually identified by federal investigators as a possible war criminal but was never prosecuted. "Lebed remained one of the agency's oldest contacts until his death in 1998," according to another declassified CIA document.

Neo-nazi Junta Calls Opposition 'Subhuman' ¶ Google & NSA Censors | by Oui on Oct 13, 2014 |

So what was the alleged threat and what is the real threat - to the USA?

A full security scan conducted by nsnbc with the newspaper's own security software revealed that several articles had been flagged as containing malware. Among them were six articles which had been published on the renown independent on-line newspaper Voltairenet. All of the articles which had been flagged as containing malware dealt with illegal U.S. Involvement in the Syria war and illegal U.S. Involvement in Ukraine.

Our scan further revealed that an article by the Bangkok based, independent analyst, editor of LandDestroyer Report, and contributor to New Eastern Outlook, nsnbc and other, Tony Cartalucci, also was on the list of flagged articles. The article is entitled "America's Nazis in Kiev: "Russians are Subhuman". The article was published in New Eastern Outlook, and was republished in LandDestroyer and nsnbc international.

Tony Cartalucci demonstrates the Nazi ideology of post-coup Ukrainian PM Arsenyi Yatzenyuk by quoting Yatzenyuk, and referring to the Nazi pamphlet "Der Untermensch", so one could understand that Yatzenyuk's quote directly reflects the racist and supremacist ideology that was spread in "Der Untermensch", which translates into "The Subhuman".

Also here, nsnbc has to remove the URL to the pamphlet and any media that continues carrying the URL risks, knowingly or not, to be added to Google's "Safe Browsing List" to have the newspaper's, journal's or blogs website flagged as containing malware, and to be removed or at the very least significantly down-graded in Google's search engine.

In February 2014, nsnbc was suddenly taken off-line and flagged as containing malware by Google's Safe Browsing List. The incident occurred about 20 minutes after nsnbc published an article entitled US' Victoria Nuland about Ukraine "Fuck the EU". The article contained a covertly recorded and leaked phone conversation between the U.S. State Department's Victoria Nuland and U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt. The conversation revealed that the U.S.' was directly involved in the micro-management of the coup d'état in Ukraine.

The real threat is, in other words, the threat that direct U.S. collaboration with terrorists in Syria and Nazis in Ukraine is disclosed to a growing number of readers who have become suspicious about the accuracy of mainstream, corporate, state and foundation funded media. nsnbc did not respond to the initial SiteLock email but received a second email from SiteLock, late at night on October 8. [As a result, the Maidan massacre of February 2014 was revised to the "Revolution of Dignity" - Oui]

The conservative London Telegraph offered more details about the Azov battalion in an article by correspondent Tom Parfitt, who wrote: "Kiev's use of volunteer paramilitaries to stamp out the Russian-backed Donetsk and Luhansk `people's republics' should send a shiver down Europe's spine.

"Recently formed battalions such as Donbas, Dnipro and Azov, with several thousand men under their command, are officially under the control of the interior ministry but their financing is murky, their training inadequate and their ideology often alarming. The Azov men use the neo-Nazi Wolfsangel (Wolf's Hook) symbol on their banner and members of the battalion are openly white supremacists, or anti-Semites."

Based on interviews with militia members, the Telegraph reported that some of the fighters doubted the reality of the Holocaust, expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler and acknowledged that they are indeed Nazis.

Andriy Biletsky, the Azov commander, "is also head of an extremist Ukrainian group called the Social National Assembly," according to the Telegraph article which quoted a commentary by Biletsky as declaring: "The historic mission of our nation in this critical moment is to lead the White Races of the world in a final crusade for their survival. A crusade against the Semite-led Untermenschen."

In other words, for the first time since World War II, a government had dispatched Nazi storm troopers to attack a European population and officials in Kiev knew what they were doing.
