Ukraine's Zelensky sacks ambassador to UK Prystaiko after criticism | BBC News - 2 hrs ago |

Earlier this month, Ben Wallace said he had warned Ukraine that its allies were "not Amazon", saying Kyiv needed to show gratitude for weapons it received in order to persuade Western politicians to give more.

Mr Wallace's remarks had stirred anger in Kyiv and he later said his words had been "somewhat misrepresented".

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reacted by saying he had been "struck" by how much Ukraine valued the UK's support.

"How else can we show our gratitude?" Mr Zelensky said in response to the defence minister's comments. "We can wake up in the morning and thank the minister. Let him write to me and tell me how to thank him."

Mr Prystaiko said last week there had been a "little bit of sarcasm" in his president's response, which he believed was "unhealthy".

Containing Fascist response in diplomacy

President Zelensky has fired ambassadors before, dismissing five at once a year ago in what was seen as a reshuffle.

But it was the controversial ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk<, whose sacking was particularly notable.

he was seen to have stepped out of line when he accused Chancellor Olaf Scholz of acting like a "sulky liver sausage"when the German leader was slow to take up a presidential invitation to visit Kyiv. [FALSE: disinformation]

"This is about the most brutal war of extermination since the Nazi invasion of Ukraine, it's not kindergarten," Mr Melnyk complained.

Outgoing defence secretary due to unveil defence strategy paper with no new money for armed forces | The Guardian |

Ben Wallace has said he would be prepared to speak out from the backbenches if Rishi Sunak does not stick to his promise to increase military spending to 2.5% of GDP in the run-up to the election.

The defence secretary, who announced over the weekend that he would resign his post in the next cabinet reshuffle, was speaking before unveiling a defence strategy paper that will lead to no extra money allocated to the armed forces despite Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Instead, the military will reprioritise £2.5bn from within its budgets to replenish weapons stockpiles depleted by gifts to Ukraine, and previously announced cuts in the size of the army to 73,000 by 2025 will go ahead as planned.

Wallace said he would try to ensure that Sunak and the chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, would keep their promise to lift defence spending from the current 2.16% of GDP to 2.5% at some point in the future, when fiscal conditions allow.

Wallace insisted the UK was not "hiding behind" other countries in deterring Russian aggression, and argued that it had to operate in alliance with others. "We haven't unilaterally been able to mount a large-scale conflict for hundreds of years. That's why we're in NATO the Atlantic Alliance and Quad in the Indo-Pacific," the defence secretary said.

Putin points to Kiev's huge losses, depleted Western arsenals in failed counteroffensive

Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed to the Ukrainian army's huge losses, depleted Western arsenals and a change in public mood in Ukraine and Europe as the consequences of Kiev's much-trumpeted counteroffensive that yielded no results.

"It is obvious today that the Kiev regime's Western handlers are clearly disappointed over the results of the so-called counteroffensive loudly trumpeted by the current Ukrainian authorities in the previous months," Putin told a meeting with permanent members of the country's Security Council.

"There are no results [of Ukraine's counteroffensive], at least for the time being. Neither huge resources pumped into the Kiev regime nor the deliveries of Western weapons - tanks, artillery, armor and missiles - nor thousands of foreign mercenaries sent there and most actively used in attempts to break through our army's front are of any help," the Russian leader said.

[...]

Depleted Western arms inventories

"Meanwhile, the entire world sees that the much-touted Western and allegedly invulnerable equipment is torched and is frequently inferior even to some Soviet-made armaments by its operational characteristics," the head of state said.

"Yes, of course, Western armaments can still be additionally supplied and thrown into battle. This, of course, causes certain damage to us and prolongs the conflict," the head of state said.

"However, firstly, NATO arsenals and old Soviet weaponry inventories in some states have already been considerably depleted. Secondly, the available production capacities in the West do not allow for quickly replenishing stocks of expended hardware and ammunition," Putin stressed.

As the Russian leader pointed out, "additional and, moreover, large resources and time are needed" to replenish the Western arms inventories.

Ukrainian army's irreparable losses

The Ukrainian military lost tens of thousands of troops in its counteroffensive, the Russian president said.

"The main thing is that Ukrainian armed formations suffered huge losses as a result of suicidal attacks. They run into tens of thousands, exactly tens of thousands of people," Putin said.

As the Russian leader pointed out, "despite constant raids, incessant waves of total mobilization across cities and villages in Ukraine, it is increasingly difficult for the current regime to send new reinforcements to the front. The country's mobilization resource is running out."

Change in public sentiment

The Russian leader also pointed to a change in public mood in Ukraine and Europe.

"People in Ukraine increasingly often pose this question, a legitimate question: for the sake of what, for the sake of whose mercenary interests their relatives and friends are being killed. They are sobering up, even if gradually and slowly," the head of state said.

"We see that public opinion in Europe is also changing. Both Europeans and representatives of the European elites see that this so-called support of Ukraine is essentially a deadlock, a futile and endless waste of money and effort and in actual fact the servicing of someone else's, far from European interests: the interests of the global hegemon from across the ocean that benefits from a weaker Europe," the Russian leader said.

Advantageous flames of war

As Putin pointed out, "the endless prolongation of the Ukraine conflict is also advantageous" for the United States.

"Judging from what is happening in real life, the current US ruling elites are doing precisely this. In any case, they are acting following this logic," the Russian leader said.

"Whether this policy corresponds to the true and vital interests of the American people is a big question and certainly a rhetorical question and let them deal with it themselves," the head of state said.

"However, the flames of war are being intensely fueled at present," Putin said. The Russian leader pointed out that the United States "exploits for this purpose the ambitions of leaders of some Eastern European states who have long turned their hatred of Russia and Russophobia into their chief export commodity and an instrument of their internal policy and now want to benefit from the Ukrainian tragedy."

I repeatedly pointed out I never wanted this war, didn't expect it to happen ... senseless endeavour of an empire challenged and in decline. After a conflict becomes a hot war, a new momentum prevents it from ending ... lost chance of diplomacy. Reality check, a war New Europe with ally USA was bound to happen. Damning for UK Conservatives under Boris Johnson dreaming of the colonial period under controversial leader Winston Churchill.

Imho, Putin is ready to settle for the 4 oblasts that voted to become Russian. He does not want to raise the territorial stakes, in order to facilitate any future negotiations. He is waiting for NATO or the White House to come to its senses.

Putin will raise the territorial stake by closing off the Ukraine from the Black Sea completely. Under Joe Biden, there is zero chance for negotiations, proven by history as VP under Obama 2009-2016 and his term as president. Any settlement will mean Ukraine can become a member of NATO. Russia won't permit that as this will be a clear existential threat. Once the war started in February 2024, all options for a diplomatic solution were left untouched by the Western allies in NATO and UK/US.

The military importance of Crimea and the Black Sea is historic as Russia and Türkiye know. The West and the US are alien to the diverse cultures and is only interested in fossil fuel and minerals of the region. Losing Afghanistan and the War on Terror, the US lost its foothold in Central Asia. The EU has been enlisted to foot the bill for economic recovery of Ukraine. The protest across Europe will start in 2024 ... election of a new EU parliament and a number of nations will be hit by austerity measures and high taxes. Higher cost of living and the start of an economic recession across Europe.

The Wider Black Sea Region in the 21st Century by Charles King ::
Strategic, Economic and Energy Perspectives (351 pp)

The place of the wider Black Sea region in the wider Europe has never been a straightforward matter. "We have just crossed the Terek [River], upon a very indifferent raft," wrote the wife of a Russian imperial official in 1811, "and are now out of Europe." For many travelers in the nineteenth century, moving across the Terek or Kuban rivers in the north Caucasus, crossing the Caucasus mountains, or sailing across the Black Sea involved moving out of Europe and into Asia, from one clearly defined and civilized space into the realm of the primitive and the unknown. But that view was not universal. Karl Marx once remarked that he regarded the squelching of two inchoate revolutions--the Polish rebellion of 1830 and the Russian expulsion of Caucasus highlanders in the 1860s--as the two most important "European" events of his lifetime. The German diplomat Max von Thielmann stretched the boundaries even further. "Europe ceases at the Place du Théâtre," he wrote in 1872, referring to a square in Tiflis, modern Tbilisi.

The Black Sea region--defined as the land- and seascape from the Balkans to the Caucasus and from the Ukrainian and Russian steppe to Anatolia--is once again squarely within the field of view of European policymakers. The European Union (EU) and NATO now border the Black Sea on the west. Turkey, an EU accession country and NATO member, borders it to the south. Members of the Council of Europe and two NATO aspirants border it on the north and east. A region that a decade ago was on the far edge of Europe's consciousness has now become the next frontier of European strategic thinking in terms of energy security, trade links, migration, and other key policy areas.

At various points in history, a distinct region defined by the Black Sea and its hinterlands has been a commonplace of European affairs, although the limits of that region have fluctuated over time. Over the last two decades, there has been considerable effort to revive Black Sea regionalism, in part through the establishment of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation forum (BSEC) in 1992 and its upgrade to the status of a full-fledged organization in 1999. Furthermore, the process of EU enlargement, the EU's need to develop a clear set of policies regarding the future of its "neighborhood" to the east, U.S. depend- ence on allies around the sea during the Iraq war, and Russia's revived desire for influence across Eurasia have all made the Black Sea region of considerable strategic interest.

This chapter places this newfound engagement with the wider Black Sea world in its historical context, offering a look back at the grand historical sweep of the region and its fitful engagement with Europe. It seeks to place the region's current challenges in the broad context of the many projects for Black Sea regionalism that have defined this zone in the past. The essay is organized around three sets of questions: First, what is a region, and is the Black Sea one? Second, how have projects for making the Black Sea into a region fared historically, and what are the obstacles to Black Sea regionalism today? Third, what are the likely prospects for and pitfalls of Black Sea region-building in the early twenty-first century?

Russia Is Connected to Western Europe

George Robertson, a former Labour defence secretary who led NATO between 1999 and 2003, said Putin made it clear at their first meeting that he wanted Russia to be part of western Europe. "They wanted to be part of that secure, stable prosperous west that Russia was out of at the time."

No peace between Orthodox churches in Ukraine yet | Aug. 18, 2022 |

The Holy Cross Monastery in Poltava (northeast Ukraine) has a lovely stone image on the bell tower, with a double-headed eagle. But it is a pity that this is the symbol of the Russian Federation. For the patriotic Ukrainians, this ornament is seen as a betrayal. This started the debate on what to do with the stucco image.

The regional official Oleg Pustovhar asked to demolish the eagles from the bell tower. According to him, this symbolises the satanic Kremlin empire and, therefore, a threat to the country. On top of that, the thought the image is a shame for the old monastery, built in the 17th century.

Pustovhar represents the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance in the region of Poltava. He officially addressed the government for this, Poltava Oblast News reported.

But the stone image was not demolished. Instead, it was covered with an icon, entirely in the style of the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Complicity with crimes

The incident regarding the monastery in Poltava is just one example of the ever-present sensitivity between the different Orthodox churches in Ukraine. Initially, there was just one church: the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), which stays in contact with the Moscow Patriarchate (MP) of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). Especially since the war started, this church has been accused of complicity with Russian crimes.

[...]
But in the years after the Ukrainian national independence in 1991, other Orthodox churches grew. Some of them were united in 2018 when the Patriarchate of Constantinople (the `Pope' of all the Orthodox churches worldwide) recognised the autonomy of the so-called Orthodox Church in Ukraine.

The teaching and the liturgy in the churches are the same. But in the OCU might be more space for the Ukrainian language, while in the UOC, the Old Slavonic is dominant.

The decision in 2018 was mainly a political move. It was the then-President Poroshenko who was behind it. Poroshenko can be seen as a Ukrainian nationalist since he also introduced legislation to discourage the use of the Russian language.

Both the language and the church politics stimulated tension with Russia. In the Orthodox understanding of a church, having two spiritual bodies with the same legality is impossible. Since then, the church issue has been at the core of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict.

Trump's Revival of anti-EU Sentiment in Warsaw | @BooMan by Oui on July 6, 2017 |

Ahead of the G20 in Germany's Hamburg, Trump is expected to give a major policy speech. His White House team has made a judgment this will take place in Poland, a nation that suffered greatly under the boots of Nazi's and equally when the Red Army crossed borders and occupied the state during the 20th century.

Today's Poland is run by a fascist leadership with similar appeals to its citizens as Trump has in America: nationalist and anti-immigration rhetoric or rather against asylum-seekers from outside of the EU. Poland has welcomed a flow of migrants from neighbouring Ukraine which is suffering from economic woes and corruption.

The Polish Prime Minister, in a speech in the European Parliament, claimed that Poland did not have the capacity to accept any Syrian refugees, as it has already accepted one million Ukrainian refugees (Chapman 2016). However, while the migration flow has indeed increased, neither the purported volume, nor the declared character of migration has been reflected by the official data. The vast majority of Ukrainians coming to Poland seek gainful employment and are not a burden on the Polish taxpayer, but rather contribute to the country's economic growth.

Poland is at the heart of criticism for EU capital Brussels and the role of giant economic power Germany.

Poland is also the point nation for neocon's New Europe and a special role in rekindling the Cold War 2.0 from president George Bush,  Defence minister Rumsfeld, NATO's General Breedlove to Obama's State Department with HRC and Victoria Nuland - Cheney's right hand on foreign policy vs. Russia.

Chances are, Trump's major policy speech will likely unite a block of nations Trump has managed to alienate in his first 100 days of his presidency. I'll be watching his speech as it happens.

Chancellor Angela Merkel is up for re-election in a few months and she has secured her lead in the polls and shown to be the leading statesman (statesperson) in Europe and on the world stage. Merkel is pulling all the right punches in domestic issues in a conservative constituency.

Very much the theme of the AngloSaxon conservatives joined by the alt-right across the Western world ... once again warmongering coming out of the Pentagon, White House and the National Security Council under leadership of neocon John Bolton.

Despite evidence that Russia's weak economy forced Moscow to slash military spending by 20 percent last year, Czech Army General Petr Pavel, the chairman of NATO's Military Committee, told RFE/RL in an interview that NATO still must build up its defenses.

"Russian military capabilities, both conventional and nuclear, are significant," he said. "And we simply cannot be blind to an increase of defense capabilities in all services, all domains. That's why we have to react."

Under the new plan, the United States will set up NATO's new Atlantic Command headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia, where the Pentagon is also offering to host a proposed NATO Joint Force Command.

Ukraine: Extremists Reject EU Deal, Demand Violent Overthrow | Feb 21st, 2014 |

Opposition leaders speaking before a large crowd gathered on Independence Square, were wholly divided. Klitschko got a luke warm response. Agitators in the crowd tried to stir unrest by shouting their disapproval. A number of coffins were transported forward towards the speaker's stage with a demand to respect the dead. Orthodox priests
led the mourning by prayers. This was repeated with more coffins and was used a strong emotional demand not to accept any agreement with dictator Yanukovich who has blood on his hands.

The extremist leaders took the stage and in a fascist style rhetoric rejected this EU brokered deal. This leader made a clear threat and demanded the resignation of president Yanukovich by 10am tomorrow morning. If he doesn't step down, the mob will march on the presidential palace and force him out. We will be armed and no one can stop us.

Entered another coffin pushed forward through the crowd and all were silenced in prayer.

All calls for no more bloodshed fell on deaf ears.

Ukrainian Orthodoxs Playing the Anti-Semitic Card

The notorious Israel Lobby is strictly anti-Russian. The State Dept. official Victoria ("Fuck EU") Nuland personally directed the Kiev coup; she handpicked the government and the president of the new American colony on the Dnieper River. Her husband, Robert Kagan, is a founder of FPI, the successor of infamous PNAC, the extremist Zionist think tank which promoted wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and pushed for a war with Iran. Now they attack Russia, but they do not forget about their support for Israel.

Is Joe Biden circling the wagons?

Uber Russia-hawk Victoria Nuland rises to acting deputy secretary of state | Responsible Statecraft |

She's done as much as anyone to sour US-Russia ties; now, she is one of Washington's top diplomats warmongers.

In a little-remarked move, the Biden administration announced that Victoria Nuland will take over as the acting second-in-command at the State Department. She replaces Wendy Sherman, who plans to retire at the end of this week.

Victoria Nuland's appointment will be a boon for Russia hawks who want to turn up the heat on the Kremlin. But, for those who favor a negotiated end to the conflict in Ukraine, a promotion for the notoriously "undiplomatic diplomat" will be a bitter pill.

A few quick reminders are in order. When Nuland was serving in the Obama administration, she had a now-infamous leaked call with the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. As the Maidan Uprising roiled the country, the pair of American diplomats discussed conversations with opposition leaders, and Nuland expressed support for putting Arseniy Yatseniuk into power. (Yatseniuk would become prime minister later that month, after Russia-friendly former President Viktor Yanukovych fled the country.) At one memorable point in the call, Nuland said "Fu-k the EU" in response to Europe's softer stance on the protests.

The controversy surrounding the call -- and larger implications of U.S. involvement in the ouster of Yanukovych -- kicked up tensions with Russia and contributed to Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to seize Crimea and support an insurgency in eastern Ukraine. Her handing out  food to demonstrators on the ground in Kyiv probably didn't help either. Nuland, along with State Department sanctions czar Daniel Fried, then led the effort to punish Putin through sanctions. Another official at State reportedly asked Fried if "the Russians realize that the two hardest-line people in the entire U.S. government are now in a position to go after them?"

Nuland's hawkish inclinations continued after she left the Obama administration. Back in 2020, she penned a Foreign Affairs essay entitled "Pinning Down Putin -- How a Confident America Should Deal With Russia" in which she called for a permanent expansion of NATO bases in the alliance's eastern flank, a move that would be sure to ratchet up tensions between the United States and Russia. As I've previously noted, Nuland also opposed the idea of a "free rollover of New START" -- the only remaining agreement that limits Washington and Moscow's nuclear weapons stockpiles -- when it was set to expire in 2021.

Chalk up a loss for Ukraine ...

Lobbing grenades, and now this ... another escalation. Damn ... it's 2023 and a long ways to go this century. Pax Americana. ☮️

Play by the rules, it's not the battlefield of Bakhmut ... idiots.

The 32-year-old had been given the green light only at 0600GMT on Thursday morning, coming hours after the Ukraine sports ministry late Wednesday changed its previous policy of barring athletes from facing Russians or Belarusians competing as neutrals.

    Another failed theatrics in warfare.

With no promises to shake hands, Ukrainians now are allowed to compete in tournaments where athletes from Russia and Belarus are allowed in neutral status

A global proxy war: Ukraine is now the center of our Eurasian competition with Russia and China | The Hill - April 10, 2023 |

The fact that the primary publicly released text is in Chinese, rather than English or Russian, is therefore a clear choice. China is the senior partner in its relationship with Russia. But the China-Russia relationship is Beijing's most important diplomatic bilateral linkage. China's decision not to provide a public English translation indicates that it sees its relations with Russia as key to a new Eurasian order, one that will be founded on principles wholly different from the old Anglo-American Eurasian order -- and one requiring a new language.

The joint statement appears more muted than the February 2022 "No Limits" declaration. Indeed, it cites the no-limits statement without using that phrase. However, it is clearly written in line with the previous declaration, given that Moscow and Beijing commit to following its "principles and spirit."

This points to a disturbing reality, at least for many Americans and faux-realists who now play geopolitics: The China-Russia entente has far deeper roots than the Ukraine War. China and Russia concluded their partnership in perpetuity, before the war, the massive Washington-Brussels sanctions packages or the imprecisely termed "proxy war" between Russia and NATO began.

The conflict in Ukraine risks inflaming the Sino-American rivalry | The Economist - Feb. 29, 2023 |

"If China teams up with Russia there will be a world war, says Ukraine's president."

Who the fu*k is actor/president Zelensky ... in between a rock and a hard place ... no where to go.

Why is the Netherlands making this known? During the war, such an announcement contributes to the deterrence of aggression, during the war Putin can say that NATO is involved. Do this in secret!

    Pentagon Impressed by Starlink's Fast Signal-Jamming Workaround in Ukraine | April 21, 2022 |

SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service is attracting some attention from the Pentagon for its ability to quickly foil signal-jamming attacks that likely came from Russia.

"In kind of the way Starlink was able to upgrade when a threat showed up, we need to be able to have that agility," Dave Tremper, director of electronic warfare at the Office of the Secretary of Defense, said during the C4ISRNET military conference.

Russia claims to have an electronic warfare system against satellites | April 18, 2023 |

In June 2023, the Pentagon signed an agreement with Elon Musk's company for the maintenance of Starlink in Ukraine. The US Department of Defense explained that Starlink's operation in Ukraine is crucial.

As of the beginning of June 2023, there were 30,000 Starlink platforms in Ukraine.

    Space-based electronic warfare

Russia may also be working on a capability to perform electronic warfare (EW) from space. Interest in this arose back in the 1980s as part of a large-scale effort to develop countermeasures against America's Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), which was aimed at forming a space-based shield against incoming Soviet missiles. One of many projects proposed at the time was a space-based EW system called OREST-02 (an unknown acronym), which is seen in a list of space-based systems intended to attack targets on land, in the oceans and in the air.[1] There are no indications that OREST-02 ever went beyond the proposal stage and the plans were likely shelved after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Last link is SPOT ON ... NATO members under pressure from the United States refused to engage, based on goodwill, with Russian leadership in the months December-January-February 2022 before the war. The drive of war propaganda seen in previous conflicts, especially the NATO Syria campaign, was supposed to inflict the major damage to the Russian Federation. From history of centuries gone by, this was doomed to fail. A military stalemate was the best result with no parties willing to engage in a negotiated settlement. A frozen conflict as this will prevent Ukraine from gaining official NATO membership and protection through Article 5. Russia has to prevent letting US arms, missile systems positioned near its borders which would represent an existential threat. The Cuban Crisis as precedent that such intrusion is unacceptable and a nuclear conflict is still not off the table. Crimea As Endgame Before Going M.A.D.

Avoiding a Long War :: U.S. Policy and the Trajectory of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict | RAND Corp. |

This war is the most significant interstate conflict in decades, and its evolution will have major consequences for the United States. It is appropriate to assess how this conflict may evolve, what alternative trajectories might mean for U.S. interests, and what Washington can do to promote a trajectory that best serves U.S. interests.

Some analysts make the case that the war is heading toward an outcome that would benefit the United States and Ukraine. Ukraine had battlefield momentum as of December 2022 [!] and could conceivably fight until it succeeds in pushing the Russian military out of the country. Proponents of this view argue that the risks of Russian nuclear use or a war with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will remain manageable.

Once it is forced out of Ukraine, a chastened Russia would have little choice but to leave its neighbor in peace--and even pay reparations for the damage it caused. However, studies of past conflicts and a close look at the course of this one suggest that this optimistic scenario is improbable.

    The War in Ukraine--Whose Quagmire? | The Rand Blog - July 11, 2023 |

Ukraine faces new perils. Not because of anything happening on the battlefield, but because Western impatience could force Ukraine into the spot it least wants to be in: at the negotiating table with Russia. Or, worse, not at the table where its future may be decided.

Ukraine's spring--now summer--counteroffensive is underway, but progress is slow. With no knockout blow from Ukraine and Russia's military leadership caught up in a "Game of Thrones" drama, some will argue it is time to wrap this conflict up before it turns into another "quagmire" or "forever war"--even if that means coercing Ukraine to accept an unfavorable settlement.
