United Nations In Stalemate Position

by Oui Fri Sep 29th, 2023 at 11:29:41 AM EST

Agreed, more or less limited to the Security Council and the five powers victorious after World War II.

After decades of breaking down the principles of the UN, continuous violations by the Big Powers of its founding Charter and sending extremist Ambassadors to NY like John Bolton ... the UN has receded to a back filling entity unable to secure peace between quarreling states.

No, today the UNSC has no magic wand to resolve US aggression through NATO and the European Union.

Another example where the EU is speaking for the Western alliance and the Far East and Global South are absent.

EU Statement at 67th IAEA General Conference on nuclear safety, security and safeguards in Ukraine, as delivered on 28 September 2023

Madam President,

I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union. The following countries align themselves with this statement: North Macedonia*, Montenegro*, Albania*, Ukraine, Republic of Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina*, Georgia, Iceland+, Liechtenstein+, and San Marino.

It has been more than 18 months since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, in violation of international law, including the UN Charter and the very principles of the IAEA Statute. The Russian invasion of Ukraine holds severe consequences for Ukraine's nuclear facilities including the past looting of the Chornobyl site as well as the illegal seizure of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).

The EU continues to condemn Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine in the strongest possible terms. We are gravely concerned about the increasing nuclear safety and security risks, with potentially severe consequences for Ukraine and its neighbouring countries, as well as wider global repercussions. None of these existed before Russia's invasion.

[...]

We would like to thank the co-sponsors - Canada, Costa Rica, Finland and Singapore - for their tireless and transparent efforts, which have resulted in a balanced draft Resolution for consideration by the General Conference. We call upon all IAEA Member States to support it.

The EU stands with Ukraine as long as necessary. We will continue to support Ukraine and the IAEA's nuclear safety and security work.

Thank you, Madam President.

The rise of Global South accelerates decline of American exceptionalism | Global Times |

BRICS expansion, a sign of the rise of the Global South, marks the decline of US hegemony and its ideological bedrock, American exceptionalism. American exceptionalism posits that the US is the "best" country in the world and portrays US dominance as a permanent feature of global politics. Presumed allies and adversaries alike are expected to follow the economic, political and military dictates of US policymakers no matter the consequences for their own sovereign development.

Xi congratulates Iran for becoming BRICS member, hails group expansion to have major influence on world

Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Iran for becoming a BRICS member when meeting with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in Johannesburg on Thursday on the sidelines of the 15th BRICS Summit. Xi said China stands ready to strengthen cooperation with Iran on BRICS and other multilateral platforms to push for a healthy and robust development of multilateralism.

[...]

Raisi said Iran appreciated China's support for Iran's formal membership in BRICS, which provided new impetus for the development of China-Iran relations and will also be conducive to better promoting Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative proposed by President Xi. He also appreciated President Xi for playing an important role in promoting dialogue and reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Iran's BRICS accession makes revival of JCPOA inconsequential: Expert | PressTV Iran |

Iran's accession to the BRICS grouping has made the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal inconsequential, as Tehran can now avail economic benefits without having to slow down its nuclear progress, says an expert.

Mohammed Kazemi, a Tehran-based foreign policy analyst who has extensively researched the impact of US sanctions, told the Press TV website that the expansion of BRICS can be a game-changer.

"Iran aimed to offer confidence-building nuclear concessions in order to get economic benefits. If it can get those economic benefits through BRICS or the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, there will be less motivation to engage in nuclear talks," Kazemi said.

[...]

Iran's President Ebrahim Raeisi, who participated in the summit, upon his return to Tehran said the country's accession to the group - which now accounts for 36 percent of global GDP and 47 percent of the world population - will significantly boost its political and economic clout.

It comes amid a stalemate in talks aimed at the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the removal of crippling sanctions on Iran due to Washington's failed policy of procrastination.

The talks have been stalled since August last year with the Biden administration showing a lack of political will to undo the damage caused to the multilateral agreement by the previous US administration.
