The Civilized World Reacts to Yemen Strikes

At 3:45 a.m. (Sana'a time) on Jan 13., U.S. forces conducted a strike against a Houthi radar site in Yemen. This strike was conducted by the USS Carney (DDG 64) using Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles and was a follow-on action on a specific military target associated with strikes taken on Jan. 12 designed to degrade the Houthi's ability to attack maritime vessels, including commercial vessels.

"The EU urges restraint by the Houthis to avoid further escalation punishment (punitive air strikes by bombers and cruise missiles) in the Red Sea and the broader region. In this context, the EU recalls the obligation of all States to respect the arms embargo under the UN Security Council resolution 2216 (2015)," Borrel added.

According to Borrel, "the EU echoes UN Security Council demand that these attacks, which impede global commerce and undermine navigational rights as well as regional peace and security, cease immediately."

"The EU will continue to contribute to regional stability," the head of the EU diplomacy concluded.

Former Spanish FM Josep Borrell had no comment on the lethal air strikes by U.S. and UK military on the Houthi territory of Yemen. UN Charter excludes diplomacy? Years of failure to resolve issues with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Biden-Blinken worthy successors to Trump-Pompeo. Joe is the better war hawk ... neocon feathers.

Arms embargo failures in case of Yemen, Bosnia etc., Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Israel of course. Likely many more states could be named post Cold War.

David Cameron: lights are 'flashing red' on the global dashboard | The Guardian |

The "lights are absolutely flashing red" on the global dashboard, the UK's foreign secretary, David Cameron, warned as he said it was hard to think of a time when there had been so much danger and volatility in the world.

Asked by Sky News if ministers had considered that the strikes on the Houthis could raise the likelihood of terrorist action in the UK, Cameron replied:

The threat level is set after careful consideration by the joint terrorist assessment centre and that is the right way of doing it, it is not in the power of politicians just to suddenly wake up one morning and change the threat level.

Our view is look, take a step back from this, it is hard to think of a time when there has been so much danger and insecurity and instability in the world.

The lights are absolutely flashing red as it were on the global dashboard and what we need at that time is strong leadership and a clear plan, that is what we have with the prime minister and the team in place.

And taking action, if you don't act against the Houthis is the Red Sea, you are going to see more attacks, they are effectively terroristic attacks, you will see more of that.

... so much danger and insecurity and instability in the world. .. I miss "insanity" of policy and decision makers.

On eve of 100 days of war, PM pledges 'complete victory,' denounces genocide claims | TOI  |

'Notice the depth of the absurdity and hypocrisy -- the supporters of the new Nazis dare to accuse us of genocide,' Netanyahu says of South African case at The Hague

Israel will continue its war against Hamas "to the end -- until complete victory," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged on Saturday evening, denouncing South African claims brought to the International Court of Justice in The Hague this week that Israel is carrying out genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

"We will restore security to both the south and the north. No one will stop us -- not The Hague, not the axis of evil and not anyone else," he said, addressing reporters during a press conference held at IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv.

"We are on the path to victory and we will not stop until we achieve victory," he said.

He recalled that he recently told US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that "this is not only our war, this is also your war. This is a war against the axis of evil led by Iran."

Condemning the "hypocritical attack in The Hague on the Jewish state that rose from the ashes of the Holocaust," Netanyahu argued that the Thursday-Friday hearings before the International Court of Justice, coming as it did on the heels of Hamas's attempt to "perpetrate another Holocaust on the Jews," constituted "a moral low in the history of nations."

"Notice the depth of the absurdity and hypocrisy -- the supporters of the new Nazis dare to accuse us of genocide. Whom do they support? Murderers, rapists, baby-burners? What an embarrassment, what an embarrassment," he said.

"The State of Israel, the IDF and our security forces are fighting a moral and just war," he continued, declaring that "this international defamation campaign will not weaken our hands or weaken our determination to fight to the end."

U.S. Meddling in Yemen offered opportunity to Northern Shiite Huthi rebels, a new truce signed | Daily Star - Sept. 2014 |

SANAA (AFP) -  Yemen's Shiite Huthi rebels, who signed a UN-brokered peace deal Sunday after seizing key institutions, only recently began extending their influence beyond their northern highland stronghold.

The rebels belong to the Zaidi sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam which makes up approximately a third of the Sunni-majority country's population.  Zaidis are the majority in the northern provinces bordering Sunni powerhouse Saudi Arabia, and are widely accused of receiving support from Shiite-dominated Iran.

The north was a Zaidi imamate until a 1962 coup turned Yemen into a republic ruled by a government long considered illegitimate by the rebels.

[...]

As an Arab Spring-inspired uprising against then president Ali Abdullah Saleh swept through Yemen in 2011, the Huthis reached out to the opposition in Sanaa and joined protest camps there. It was their first major show of influence outside their strongholds in Saada and Amran provinces.

Article seven years ago...

Why is there a war in Yemen?

An age old rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran is fuelling conflict in a country that is divided along sectarian, tribal and military lines.

For over a year, a fully-fledged war has been raging in one of the poorest countries in the Arabian Peninsula, tucked under oil-rich Saudi Arabia - Yemen.

A coalition of seven Gulf states led by the Saudis has been bombing the country's capital, Sanaa. The air strikes are aimed at pushing out the Houthi rebel forces that expelled Yemen's Saudi-backed government in January 2015.

The Saudi-led campaign has not achieved much. The Houthis are now marching towards the southern city of Taiz, putting them close to the largest port city, Aden. After the fall of Sanaa, the Saudi-backed government relocated to the city and is currently based there.

Yemen conflict Ali Abdullah Saleh and Mansour Hadi for leadership

On December 4, Houthi fighters killed Yemen's former president and their erstwhile ally, Ali Abdullah Saleh. Prior to their violent divorce, Saleh's General People's Congress party (GPC) and the Houthis (a Zaydi/Shia rebel movement) were partners against the Saudi Arabia-led coalition and its allies, including the United States, who are fighting on behalf of the internationally recognized government of Abed-Rabbo Mansour Hadi. Despite nearly three years of a punishing air campaign and strategy of economic strangulation by the coalition, the Houthi-Saleh alliance remained firmly ensconced in the northern Zaydi highlands. They also controlled most of the Red Sea coastal province of Hodeidah and parts of the southern uplands (a predominantly Shafi/Sunni area in north Yemen), including Ibb and limited parts of Taiz.
