Amsterdam: the "Pogrom" That Wasn't | Richard Silverstein |
Heart of Amsterdam - Dam Square - assembly point for Maccabi fans the night before the Ajax match
Earlier this month, the Maccabi Tel Aviv football team traveled to Amsterdam for a match with one of Holland's top clubs, Ajax. Hundreds of Israeli fans [adjusted est. 2,600] traveled there as well to cheer their team on. These supporters are known as not only soccer hooligans, but as vicious, racist, genocidal thugs who sing, shout, taunt and flaunt their hatred against "Arabs" (the generic term Israelis use to designate anyone Arab (including Palestinians). They belt out these slogans before, during and after matches, whether they win or lose.

Why/How Did the Media Lie?
Contrary to all footage available, mainstream media's portrayal obfuscated the sequence of events and eschewed how matters were instigated by supporters of the Israeli football club. Further, any causative relationship to Israel's Genocide in Gaza and its club's hooligans was simply eliminated from the narrative.
The media were determined to amplify the claims of the political class that the events in Amsterdam were solely the product of a purported Antisemitic culture by MENA immigrants. Football Teams' 'Jewish' Identities Questioned | Spiegel - 10 April 2013 |
They call themselves the "Yid Army" and "Super Jews": For decades, the fans of football clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax Amsterdam have maintained a Jewish identity despite lacking links to the religion. Criticism of the practice is growing.
According to Jewish investigative journalist Hans Knoop, "The opposing fans aren't necessarily anti-Semitic, but they are against Ajax. And if Ajax are Jews, they have to be against the Jews."

Israel boasts new ’proof' of NGO terror ties -- by getting the facts wrong | +972 Magazine - 11 Nov 2021 |
Israel celebrated the conviction of Juana Ruiz Rishmawi as evidence linking Palestinian rights groups to 'terrorists.' That's not exactly what happened.
During her hearing on Wednesday, however, Ruiz Rishmawi's attorney Avigdor Feldman noted that she could not confirm the details that were included in the background section, since she has no knowledge of whether the six organizations were tied to PFLP activities, nor has information on internal PFLP operations. In the courtroom, Ruiz Rishmawi, who was aided by a simultaneous Spanish translator, appeared visibly upset by the idea that she would have to confirm those details.
Moreover, while Lapid and Gantz took the indictment's background section as proof of their claims against the six NGOs, the military prosecutor himself told the courtroom that the details laid out in that section are not attributed to the defendant.
The odds under military rule
Missing from the government's narrative, of course, is the context in which Ruiz Rishmawi's case is unfolding. Israel's military court system, which operates as a central mechanism of control over occupied Palestinians, notoriously has a conviction rate of about 99.74 percent, dealing with cases that range from militant activities to peaceful protests to arbitrary detention.
In the face of these odds, it is clear why defendants like Ruiz Rishmawi would prefer to sign plea deals in an attempt to avoid imprisonment or receive a lessened sentence. These deals are commonplace both in Israeli civilian and military courts, yet Ruiz Rishmawi's case has significant international ramifications, due both to her Spanish citizenship and her work with a foreign-funded NGO.

Khatib “legitimises, condones and glorifies violence against the state of Israel, including violence by organisations on the European Union’s terrorism list,” Van Weel and Faber said in a statement. “He also actively expresses support for terrorist organisations. These statements may have a radicalising effect.”
Ministers said that while freedom of speech is a “great good” that may lead to disagreement, this had to take place within the “democratic values that we have agreed on together.”

Germany has already banned Samidoun for “anti-Semitic statements” and “open support for terror organisation Hamas”. The Belgian government is also trying to revoke Khatib’s refugee status on the grounds that he may pose a danger to society. He has had refugee status in Belgium since 2010.
Radboud University, which said earlier it had no problem with the invitation, said it will wait for official confirmation that Khatib has been banned before commenting.
Meanwhile, the two lecturers who invited him to speak at their Situating Palestine course have described the way Khatib has been “framed” as a “hate preacher” to be Islamophobic and anti-Palestinian racism.
Samidoun plans to take legal action against the plan. “This will not hold up in court because no criminal acts have been committed,” board member Thomas Hofland told the AD.
