Amsterdam: the "Pogrom" That Wasn't | Richard Silverstein |

Heart of Amsterdam - Dam Square - assembly point for Maccabi fans the night before the Ajax match

Earlier this month, the Maccabi Tel Aviv football team traveled to Amsterdam for a match with one of Holland's top clubs, Ajax. Hundreds of Israeli fans [adjusted est. 2,600] traveled there as well to cheer their team on. These supporters are known as not only soccer hooligans, but as vicious, racist, genocidal thugs who sing, shout, taunt and flaunt their hatred against "Arabs" (the generic term Israelis use to designate anyone Arab (including Palestinians). They belt out these slogans before, during and after matches, whether they win or lose.

Why/How Did the Media Lie?

Contrary to all footage available, mainstream media's portrayal obfuscated the sequence of events and eschewed how matters were instigated by supporters of the Israeli football club. Further, any causative relationship to Israel's Genocide in Gaza and its club's hooligans was simply eliminated from the narrative.

The media were determined to amplify the claims of the political class that the events in Amsterdam were solely the product of a purported Antisemitic culture by MENA immigrants. Football Teams' 'Jewish' Identities Questioned | Spiegel - 10 April 2013  |

They call themselves the "Yid Army" and "Super Jews": For decades, the fans of football clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax Amsterdam have maintained a Jewish identity despite lacking links to the religion. Criticism of the practice is growing.

According to Jewish investigative journalist Hans Knoop, "The opposing fans aren't necessarily anti-Semitic, but they are against Ajax. And if Ajax are Jews, they have to be against the Jews."

Israel boasts new ’proof' of NGO terror ties -- by getting the facts wrong | +972 Magazine - 11 Nov 2021 |

Israel celebrated the conviction of Juana Ruiz Rishmawi as evidence linking Palestinian rights groups to 'terrorists.' That's not exactly what happened.

During her hearing on Wednesday, however, Ruiz Rishmawi's attorney Avigdor Feldman noted that she could not confirm the details that were included in the background section, since she has no knowledge of whether the six organizations were tied to PFLP activities, nor has information on internal PFLP operations. In the courtroom, Ruiz Rishmawi, who was aided by a simultaneous Spanish translator, appeared visibly upset by the idea that she would have to confirm those details.

Moreover, while Lapid and Gantz took the indictment's background section as proof of their claims against the six NGOs, the military prosecutor himself told the courtroom that the details laid out in that section are not attributed to the defendant.

The odds under military rule

Missing from the government's narrative, of course, is the context in which Ruiz Rishmawi's case is unfolding. Israel's military court system, which operates as a central mechanism of control over occupied Palestinians, notoriously has a conviction rate of about 99.74 percent, dealing with cases that range from militant activities to peaceful protests to arbitrary detention.

In the face of these odds, it is clear why defendants like Ruiz Rishmawi would prefer to sign plea deals in an attempt to avoid imprisonment or receive a lessened sentence. These deals are commonplace both in Israeli civilian and military courts, yet Ruiz Rishmawi's case has significant international ramifications, due both to her Spanish citizenship and her work with a foreign-funded NGO.

Khatib “legitimises, condones and glorifies violence against the state of Israel, including violence by organisations on the European Union’s terrorism list,” Van Weel and Faber said in a statement. “He also actively expresses support for terrorist organisations. These statements may have a radicalising effect.” Ministers said that while freedom of speech is a “great good” that may lead to disagreement, this had to take place within the “democratic values that we have agreed on together.”

  • Germany has already banned Samidoun for “anti-Semitic statements” and “open support for terror organisation Hamas”. The Belgian government is also trying to revoke Khatib’s refugee status on the grounds that he may pose a danger to society. He has had refugee status in Belgium since 2010.

Radboud University, which said earlier it had no problem with the invitation, said it will wait for official confirmation that Khatib has been banned before commenting.

Meanwhile, the two lecturers who invited him to speak at their Situating Palestine course have described the way Khatib has been “framed” as a “hate preacher” to be Islamophobic and anti-Palestinian racism.

Samidoun plans to take legal action against the plan. “This will not hold up in court because no criminal acts have been committed,” board member Thomas Hofland told the AD.

3 judges vote unanimously to pursue alleged crimes against humanity, making Israeli premier, ex-defense chief internationally sought suspects; PM's office slams 'antisemitic decision'

In a massive legal bombshell, the International Criminal Court on Thursday issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant over the war in Gaza, an unprecedented step that put the two at risk of being detained in much of the world.

The three judges of the ICC's Pre-Trial Chamber I issued the warrants unanimously on charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes, which the court's top prosecutor Karim Khan alleges were committed during the ongoing war against the Hamas terror group in Gaza.

The decision marked the first time the ICC has ever issued arrest warrants against leaders of a democratic country.

Both Netanyahu and Gallant will be liable for arrest if they travel to any of the more than 120 countries that are party to the ICC.

World leaders, states hail ICC arrest warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant | PressTV |

Most world leaders, states and humanitarian organizations have praised the International Criminal Court's decision to issue long-awaited arrest warrants for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and and ousted war minister Yoav Gallant.

They said arrest warrants issued for Netanyahu and Gallant were "binding" and should be implemented.

EU says ICC arrest warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant 'binding'

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, said during a visit to the Jordanian capital Amman that the decision to issue these warrants was "not political," and that the court's decision should be "respected and implemented."

"It is not a political decision. It is a decision of a court, of a court of justice, of an international court of justice. And the decision of the court has to be respected and implemented," Borrell said

"This decision is a binding decision and all states, all state parties of the court, which include all members of the European Union, are binding to implement this court decision," he said after a joint news conference with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi.

Safadi, for his part, said that the International Criminal Court's decision must be respected and implemented, adding the Palestinians deserved justice after  Israel's "war crimes" in Gaza.

He said the decision also serves as a message to the international community to take practical steps to stop "the massacres being committed in Gaza."

The French Foreign Ministry spokesman says that France's reaction to the decision will be in line with the court's statutes.

Netherlands ready to act upon ICC arrest warrant for Netanyahu

The Netherlands is prepared to act upon the arrest warrant issued by the ICC against Netanyahu if needed, Dutch news agency ANP has reported, citing the country's Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp.

If the Israeli leader comes to Dutch soil, he will be arrested, Veldkamp said in the House of Representatives, local outlet Nos reported.

The Netherlands will also avoid "non-essential" contact with Netanyahu and Gallant.

Dutch cabinet will adhere to International Law ... if Netanyahu set a foot on Dutch territory, he will be arrested and extradited to the ICC Court in The Hague. How a out the long period of Dutch complicity ... Will that end also? Geert Wilders will show contempt for the ICC and World Court ICJ. May cause downfall of his first majority leading coalition in Dutch parliament ... this decision by both ICJ and ICC may be a bridge too far for the Trump look alike populist leader who is strongly pro Zionist Jewish State. Had planned a  visit to "Judea and Samaria" to meet with settler terror minister Ben Gvir.

Geert Wilders calls for kicking out ICC prosecutor over Israel `bias' | TOI - 27 Dec 2019 |

Far-right Dutch politician says court 'behaves as a biased pro-Palestinian institution and an anti-Semitic kangaroo court'

Geert Wilders called for the expulsion of Fatou Bensouda over her Dec. 20 report alleging that both Israelis and Palestinians had committed war crimes. Bensouda is based in The Hague.

Bensouda's 112-page report asked the court to decide whether it has jurisdiction over Israel, which like the United States is not a party to the treaty that constitutes the court's mandate. The Palestinian Authority is party to the treaty.

Israel maintains the court has no jurisdiction because Israel has a functioning judicial system that can exercise proper oversight of its leaders.

In his statement, Wilders whose Party for Freedom won 20 seats in parliament in 2017 elections, said that the court "behaves as a biased pro-Palestinian institution and an anti-Semitic kangaroo court." Bensouda "should be declared persona non grata and be evicted out of the Netherlands," Wilders wrote.

Wilders, who is a vocal opponent of Muslim immigration to the Netherlands and European integration a leading Islamophobe with financial support from Israel lobby located in the U.S., is a strong supporter of Israel.

How coverage of the Amsterdam soccer violence exposed the media's 'antisemitism' fiction | Mondoweiss |

The media's censorship of the facts of the Amsterdam soccer hooligan violence was more than just bad reporting. It was yet another example of the ideological fiction that Jewish actions can never be blamed for the violence they cause.

Initially, Dutch media provided detailed coverage of the events, including footage showing Maccabi Tel Aviv fans tearing down a Palestinian flag from an Amsterdam home, chanting "Let the IDF win, we will fuck the Arabs" and "Death to Arabs," disrupting a minute's silence for Valencia flood victims, and attacking a local taxi driver of Moroccan descent. But soon coverage by major outlets stripped these details, presenting instead a narrative focused solely on supposed antisemitic violence against Israeli fans.

The New York Times reportedly killed their own story about the incident, and revised stories by Sky News and other major outlets removed all references to the Israeli fans' provocative actions, presenting instead a simplified narrative of Israeli fans being attacked in what was characterized as purely antisemitic violence. Benjamin Netanyahu compared the anti-Israeli violence in Amsterdam to Kristallnacht, "an attack on Jews just for being Jews," and this quickly became reflected in coverage by describing the violence as a "pogrom," with references from European politicians and the worldwide media to dark events in the Jewish past, although some academics disputed this ideological framing.
