State Of The War For Palestine

As the conflict in Lebanon subsides Israel and the U.S. have reignited the war in Syria. There have been signs for a while that this was going to happen. Yesterday Al-Qaeda affiliated HTS fighters, which has been rebuild and sponsored with CIA money, have relaunched their attacks on Syrian government forces west of Aleppo. Syrian and Russian air force attacks have for now stopped their progress. Hizbullah's Rudwan forces have yet to intervene but are deployed to defend Aleppo.

Jacobin Magazine just published latest piece by Richard Silverstein:

Trump 2.0 Means More Pain in the Middle East

Joe Biden has facilitated a devastatingly brutal war by Israel against Gaza. Donald Trump is about to make it much worse.

Biden never made a clean break with Trump's Middle East policy. The status quo -- what Daniel Moynihan once called "benign neglect" -- seemed a reasonable approach.

For example, Biden never returned to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Trump and the Republicans, allied with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, hammered Democrats for years over the deal negotiated by Obama. One of Trump's major campaign promises was to withdraw from it, which he did in 2018. When Biden came into office, he wasn't willing to expend the political capital it would take to come to a new agreement.

Similarly, he maintained Trump's harsh diplomatic and financial embargo on Palestine. This included the Trump administration's closure of the Palestinian Liberation Organization "office" in Washington, DC, and the suspension of financial and security assistance to the Palestinian Authority. Biden did not reverse the US embassy move to Jerusalem or recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank and Golan. All were approved by the first Trump administration.

Israel-Iran Seek to Control Online Narrative

Israel-Iran War of Words Ahead of a Confrontation

Western narrative of BS and disinformation … setting the tone for another war.

Iran and Israel Seek to Control online Narrative of their Conflict in advance of Next Hot Exchange | Informed Comment |

The rumor mill again kicked into overdrive in late November, with various media outlets, including those in Israel, suggesting that Khamenei had fallen into a coma and that the race was on to appoint his successor should he remain incapacitated or worse. Iranian sources quickly refuted the speculation.

Such conjecture is nothing new, with reports as far back as 2007 [rumor source Michael Ledeen (FDD) and more recently in 2022 pointing to the supreme leader’s purportedly ill health.

The truth of Khamenei’s health aside, the speculation points to an ever-present reality: The conflict between Iran on one side and Israel and the West on the other is not just about military might and threats – there is also an information battle being waged.

In that battle, the narrative of Khamenei’s poor health can be seen as a proxy for the health and stability of the Islamic Republic. One story has it that the Islamic Republic is unstable and just one major event away from wholesale change; the other, that the government in Tehran is well positioned to deal with both internal succession and external ideological foes.

The war of words

The speculation regarding Khamenei’s health comes amid a particularly tense moment in Israeli-Iranian relations. For the past year, the long-time foes have exchanged fiery rhetoric, which has been exacerbated by a series of escalatory events, including high-profile assassinations of Iran-alligned figures in Gaza, Lebanon and Tehran, and more lately direct military confrontation.

Terror Groups Isolated in Idlib, HTS Acting as CIA Proxy

US military strikes Iranian-linked militia group's weapons storage facility in Syria | Anadolu Agency |

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Tuesday that it struck an Iranian-linked militia group's weapons storage facility in Syria.

"The strike is in response to an Iranian-aligned attack against U.S. forces in Syria yesterday," CENTCOM said in a release.

It said the strike aimed to degrade the group's ability to plan and launch future attacks on US and coalition forces who are in the region to carry out operations against Daesh/ISIS.

"As previously stated, we will not tolerate any attacks on our personnel and coalition partners. We are committed to taking all necessary actions to ensure their protection," said CENTCOM commander Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla.

U.S. Further Complicates Its Return To The Nuclear Deal With Iran | MofA - 25 Feb 2021 |

A week ago we found that Biden's slow walking of a U.S. return to the nuclear deal with Iran makes no sense if we presume that doing so is really his aim:

Why Is Biden Creating Himself An Iran Quagmire? | MofA - 18 feb 2021 |

The Biden administration demands that Iran fully come back under the restrictions of the deal, to agree to an extension of some restriction under the deal and to agree to talks about its missile programs and its role in the Middle East. Only after that, says the Biden administration, would the U.S. remove some of its sanctions.

The demands are nonsense and have absolutely no chance of being fulfilled.

It is the U.S. that is in breach of the deal. Biden could simply reenter it by lifting the sanctions Trump imposed. Iran had promised that it would follow through by coming back into the technical limits of the deal. But instead of agreeing to that the Biden administration is trying to create a more complicated process by coordinating its negotiation positions with Saudi Arabia, Israel and other opponents of the deal: ...

Then came the announcement of a brigade strong deployment of NATO forces to Iraq with the obviously aim to put pressure on Iran ...

The latter was in preparation of the Afghan withdrawal and America losing its foothold in Central Asia and risk of losing influence in the Caspian Sea basin of fossil fuel wealth. The Black Sea became a critical issue for the empire.

Today we witness Joe grasping last straws to put pressure on Syria, Russia and Iran ... the proxy terror group HTS holed-up in the Idlib sanctuary as a moment of grace for not being obliterated ... Al Nusra » Al Qaeda. Useful idiots for an empire ending in disgrace and failure.

Why U.S. and allies can't afford to let Kobani fall to Islamic State - Part 2 | PBS Newshour - Video |

Conflict In Syria | CFR |

An explosion rocks the Syrian town of Kobani during a reported suicide car bomb attack by IS militants on the People"s Protection Unit (YPG) position, as seen from the outskirts of Suruc, on the Turkye-Syria border, on Oct. 20, 2014 (Photo: Getty images)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad now controls about 70 percent of Syria's territory and has achieved normalization with several Arab states, as well as reinstatement in the Arab League, bringing him out of isolation. His military, along with Russian air support, continues to battle Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a coalition of Islamist militant groups in northwest Syria. [Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham rooted in jihadist groups supported by Israel and the U.S., Jabhat al-Nusra which was aligned with Al Qaeda]

Meanwhile, the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Defense Forces (SDF), which controls most of northeastern Syria, regularly clashes with Arab tribes that accuse the group of discrimination. Turkey and its proxies also control areas along the northern border and have ramped up attacks on Kurdish forces.

Factionalized fighting has made space for the self-proclaimed Islamic State to maintain a presence and launch attacks, and the United States has at least nine hundred military personnel in Syria to conduct "counterterrorism operations".

Additionally, Israel regularly strikes Iranian and Syrian military positions in Syria and has increased attacks, including hitting the Damascus and Aleppo airports, since Hamas's October attack on Israel.

My diaries @BooMan following the conflict in Syria quite closely ...

As predicted by Putin hours earlier, the forces of KSA Salafists will try to destroy any agreement leading to a diplomatic resolution on Syria. We've seen and watched it over the last six years, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her successor John Kerry could not succeed at Geneva because of the hostilities between proxy rebels of the Muslim Brotherhood (Qatar and Turkey) and the Salafists supported by KSA and GCC states. The Pentagon and the CIA have also developed adversaries in the proxy war, vying for control of territory as the bloodshed continues. Fortunately since the intervention by Russia, the number of deaths have steadily decreased.

On February 27, a squadron of Russian and Syrian fighters hit a position occupied by the Turkish army in the Idlib region, killing 33 Turkish soldiers.

The Russians later explained that the Turks, who had come as reinforcements to resist the Assad regime's offensive targeting the last rebel-held enclave, had not reported their presence. Their location would have also been indistinguishable from positions held by jihadist groups.

[...]

In the days that followed, the Turks responded with violent attacks, including drone attacks, on Syrian air defense systems and units of the Syrian army and Hezbollah. At least two Syrian aircraft were shot down. The Damascus offensive against Idlib was halted and the regime suffered heavy casualties - with no Russian intervention nor, naturally, Russian forces being targeted by the Turks. In other words, Russia had indeed stopped the Turkish intervention in the Idlib area, while allowing Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to save face through his army teaching a "lesson" to the Damascus regime. Neither Moscow nor Ankara had any interest in prolonging the arm wrestling: the conditions were ripe for a compromise between the two players that would freeze the situation.

Erdoğan and Putin therefore agreed on a ceasefire, in Moscow on March 5, seemingly endorsing the advances of the regime's forces in the province, particularly control of the motorway linking Aleppo to Damascus, and replacing the Sochi agreement of September 2018.

Erdogan is far from pleased with the situation of Tatars and their Crimea "homeland".

Israel must prepare for potential emergence of Sunni jihadist threat on its border | Ynet News |

Analysis: Turkey-backed offensive against Assad and Shiite militias in Syria appears to be direct consequence of Lebanon cease-fire deal, leaving Damascus isolated without robust support it once relied on from Hezbollah, Iran and Russia

To disrupt Iranian assistance to Hezbollah, the IDF reportedly carried out approximately 70 airstrikes in Syria, targeting not only arms routes along the Lebanese border but also warehouses and installations belonging to Hezbollah and other Shiite militias across the country.

These militias, alongside Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), have been instrumental in propping up the Assad regime and fighting the insurgents in Idlib.

Aleppo Is Reeling: Turkey's Strategy and the Axis of Resistance Under Pressure
By Elijah J. Magnier

The Syrian opposition forces, primarily led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Ahrar al-Sham, with support from Islamist jihadist groups, have launched a significant ground offensive over the past 48 hours in rural Idlib, rural Aleppo, and parts of Aleppo city supported by drones and armoured battalions. In a rapid and well-coordinated advance, they have captured dozens of villages, including strategic areas along the M4 and M5 international highways connecting Damascus to Aleppo and Aleppo to Latakia, as well as the critical cities of Saraqeb and most of Aleppo. With the Syrian army's defensive lines nearly nonexistent, it appears only a matter of time before opposition forces gain complete control of Aleppo city. Reclaiming these losses would require tens of thousands of troops, a resource the Syrian army does not currently possess.

This swift and unexpected rapid advance underscores the Syrian army's inability to effectively defend these territories, creating a significant opportunity for Turkey's allies to push their agenda. HTS has labelled the operation "Deterrence of Aggression," presenting it as a retaliation for recent artillery shelling by Syrian government forces that caused civilian casualties in Idlib. The operation is more than a retaliation but reflects the opposition's intent to reclaim territories lost during the 2019 Saraqeb-Idlib battles. With government forces in a chaotic retreat, a defensive line has been hastily established in Hama province. However, the opposition forces are now less than 20 kilometres from Hama, rendering the areas south of Idlib and Aleppo and their rural surroundings largely inaccessible for the government to retake.
