Georgian president upbeat ahead of mass protests | EU Observer - 9 April 2009 |
Thursday's mass rally calling for Mikhail Saakashvili's resignation will not have an impact on the country's leadership, the Georgian president told this website, with EU diplomats and experts on site to observe the protests and the police response.
"Georgia has had many manifestations in the past and there is a big opposition mobilisation, but we don't expect more than the French expected from the manifestations against their government," Mr Saakashvili said.

Georgian president upbeat ahead of mass protests | EurActiv - May 2009 |
The 'biggest ever' opposition rally in Tbilisi on 26 May demanded the resignation of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, whose government cancelled a military parade to avoid confrontation.
Protesters waving white ribbons packed the 60,000-capacity national football stadium, in what appeared to be the largest rally since the opposition launched daily demonstrations against Saakashvili six weeks ago.
The opposition accuses 41-year-old Saakashvili of monopolising power since the 2003 'Rose Revolution' that ousted the ex-Soviet old guard of Eduard Shevardnadze. He has come under renewed pressure since a disastrous war with neighbouring Russia in August last year.

European court of human rights rejects appeals over Mikheil Saakashvili's criminal cases heard in Georgian courts | The Guardian - 23 May 2024 |
Saakashvili, who was president of Georgia from 2004 to 2013, was said by the European court of human rights to have failed to show he had been unfairly treated in his trials in 2018.
The court found there were credible witnesses in both proceedings, and that his argument that the presidential power of clemency was unlimited "could be dangerous and encourage corruption".

What's behind Mikheil Saakashvili's Ukraine ordeal? | Al Jazeera - 13 Feb 2018 |
Ukraine deports opposition leader Mikheil Saakashvili to Poland, months after stripping him of Ukrainian citizenship.
In December, Saakashvili climbed on the roof of a building in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, as armed police stormed his apartment. After he was dragged down by the security forces and bundled into a police van, a group of supporters rushed to his aid, ripping off the doors of the vehicle to allow his escape.
The latest dramatic episode came on Monday, when a large group of men in military uniforms dragged him out of a restaurant and deported him to Poland. Saakashvili called the move "kidnapping".

Rose Revolution leader says West's weakness emboldened Russia to attack Georgia and Ukraine
This could have been a time of celebration for Mikheil Saakashvili, as Georgia prepares to mark 20 years since the pro-democracy revolution that he led and deepen the European integration that he pursued.
Instead, he is now an ailing prisoner of the country he used to rule.
Few political careers can match Saakashvili's for drama: as president after the Rose Revolution of November 2003, his sweeping reforms and modernisation drive made Georgia the West's main political and economic ally in the region, stoking Kremlin anger that fuelled a short war in 2008 which cemented Russia's de facto control over a fifth of Georgian territory.

Saakashvili Addresses Ukraine from Jail

Translation:
I want to address our Ukrainian friends.
I am fighting here. I am very optimistic. There is no need to be depressed, because our enemy is actually also getting tired and he has no future, he has no prospects.
The main thing now is not to quarrel. The main thing is to be together and then we will definitely win.
I miss you so much, I missed Ukraine and each of you so much. We will meet very soon.
I want to wish everyone happiness and victory.
Glory to Ukraine. Glory to the nation. Death to our enemies.
Thank you all for your support!
