Report claims Netanyahu agreed to withdraw from Golan Heights | TOI - 12 Oct 2012 |

Yedioth Ahronoth cites US documents describing indirect talks between PM and Assad in 2010; PMO denies story

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed in principle to withdraw from the Golan Heights during indirect talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad in 2010, according to US documents cited by Yedioth Ahronoth.

The pertinent documents were written by Special Coordinator for the Middle East Frederick Hoff, an assistant to the then-US Special Envoy for the Middle East George Mitchell

The paper reported that Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak opened secret negotiations with Assad over a full withdrawal from the Golan to the shores of the Sea of Galilee in exchange for a peace deal. Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967.

Netanyahu had Israeli officials who were involved in the negotiations sign confidentiality agreements, according to Yedioth, in order to guard the secrecy of the talks, of which the rest of the Israeli government was apparently unaware. The negotiations reportedly ended in early 2011, with the outbreak of the popular uprising against the Assad regime.

Introduction

Saudi King Salman has refused an invitation from President Obama to attend a landmark summit at Camp David.

New King Salman has set aside the Saudi fatwa of the Muslim Brotherhood in order to gain strength in the region to take the fight to Iran and its proxy states ... Yemen, Lebanon and Syria. Turkey already is a great asset to the Saudis and is doing its utmost to get Pakistan on board as well. There are rumours the Saudi Kingdom has bribed Israel with funds above $10bn to get rid of Hezbollah and Assad. Remember that Putin told Saudi envoy Prince Bandar bin Sultan to go to hell when bribes were offered ...

Saudi Arabia and Israel have been working together on intelligence and foreign policy ever since the Lebanon civil war and closer since the Iraq invasion in 2003. Both states want to rid Hezbollah and Assad in the Levant. The United States has a dysfunctional Middle East policy, fully biased to protect a racist and fascist Jewish state. The US corporations (military-industrial complex) profit from massive arms contracts to the GCC states, this trumps any and all political oriented foreign policy.

The Middle East has become a powder keg ready to explode. The United Nations has been side-stepped due to intransigence of parties believing their military position is a better option. As we have seen in Syria for 5 years, you can't negotiate for a political solution while brandishing weaponry and upping intelligence and delivery of arms. A schizophrenic policy which has no credibility for all parties involved.

Turks and Sauds to Install Sunni Terror in Damascus, Syria

| by Oui @BooMan - 9 May 2015 |

At last someone is in agreement with me in what western-backed regime change in Syria has wrought and what will be the end game. Due to the Iraq invasion by the UK-US coalition of Labour leader Tony Blair and Republican president George W. Bush, the Sunni-Shia balance in the region shifted. Saudi king Fahd and crown-prince Abdullah had warned the White House for the consequences. Bush, Cheney and a united U.S. Congress decided otherwise. Egypt's dictator Mubarak warned for dire effects and called it opening Pandora's Box. We also know that NATO partner Turkey was reluctant and did not permit a front to be opened from its territory.

Israel was a strong partner of U.S. right-wing politicians and the Neocon theme of regime change in both Iraq and Syria. As I have written before, there was a political movement to bring Syria closer to the European Union by offering economic ties in exchange for a path to democratic principles and human rights. Even Israel was in secret negotiations with Assad for a peace treaty and a deal for the occupied territory of the Golan Heights as late as 2010.

When the Arab Spring ignited in Tunisia, all diplomatic principles and International Law of state sovereignty were pushed aside. The advisors to President Obama in the White House had found a principle to circumvent the U.N. Security Council to make war by other means: the fake R2P principle of interference by western powers. It had been successfully tried in Serbia and Kosovo.

Later under U.S. leadership - thanking Hillary Clinton [and Samantha Power] - NATO would intervene in Libya and would continue beyond R2P and see to the overthrow and death of dictator Gaddafi. The chaos as result we can witness daily here in Europe. Most likely the media offer no coverage of the hundreds of deaths, spread of arms and munitions as far as Boko Haram, the war in Mali and the Maghreb and the movement of jihadists from Algeria into Syria and Iraq.

During the ugly war of occupation in Iraq, the Saudi Kingdom began supplying arms and funds to their Sunni compatriots in Iraq's Sunni triangle of Anbar province. This Sunni movement against U.S. occupation and Shia dominance in Baghdad government led ultimately to the rise of ISIS. As western powers under Obama had encouraged and supported the revolt to overthrow Assad in neighbouring Syria, the ISIS fighters and thousands of foreign jihadists from Arab states, Chechnya and the AfPak border region swarmed to northern Syria. Money from the wealthy Gulf states and encouraged by NATO partner Turkey, the long process to destroy the secular state of Syria has begun. It is what it is today, and the end game is becoming clearer by the day.

The U.S. has played an intolerable role of being compliant although the motivation can only come from the chess game of regional and world powers. Israel is giving it's support by incidental bombing raids over Syria with the argument of destroying the Shia axis from Teheran-Baghdad-Damascus-Beirut. Israel lives by destruction of its neighbouring state and the creation of chaos. This is exactly why U.S. Republicans love Israel and its leadership from Peres to Barak to Sharon and today's populist Netanyahu. Why is Israel calling the shots in Washington DC? The White House wants to destroy Putin's Russia because of its reluctance in the Security Council on the intervention in Libya and Syria.

Both Israel and Turkey have a warm relationship with Russia.

[...]

The Salafist uprising will not stop in Syria of course as the destruction won't be complete until the removal (death) of Hezbollah and the Shia in Lebanon. The days of the Jordanian Hashemite monarchy are numbered as well. Remember the first Gulf War and the alliance of Jordan and the Palestinians with Saddam Hussein?

There will come a moment these states will have to put boots on the ground in Syria to prevent the rebel forces to unite with the Islamic State. I doubt the Saudi Kingdom will offer it's sons for a ground war, so most likely armed forces will be delivered by more populated nations: Egypt, Turkey and Pakistan. It's even possible mercenaries will be sought in Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia.

IDF deploys in Golan buffer zone with Syria, girding for post-Assad regime chaos |TOI |

On Saturday, the IDF intervened with artillery shelling to repel gunmen who tried to attack a UNDOF post near the Syrian village of Hader, close to the border. Rebel forces announced they had taken the border regions of Quneitra and Daraa earlier in the day.

Also on Sunday morning, the IDF’s 98th Division with the Paratroopers and Commando brigades was dispatched to the Golan Heights, bolstering its already shored-up forces in the area.

The IDF also imposed closed military zones in the Golan Heights on the Israeli side of the border with Syria.

The military said agricultural areas near Merom Golan, Ein Zivan, Buq’ata and Khirbet Ein Hura would be off-limits for civilians until the end of the month.

According to the source in the Kremlin, Assad and his family have arrived in Moscow. Being guided by humanitarian considerations, Russia has granted asylum for them.

"Russia has always spoken in favor of a political settlement of the Syrian crisis. We insist that the UN-mediated talks be resumed," the source said.

"Russian officials are in touch with representatives of armed Syrian opposition, whose leaders have guaranteed security of Russian military bases and diplomatic missions on the Syrian territory," the source added.

Militants storm Iranian embassy in Syria after fall of Assad government | PressTV |

Foreign-backed militants, led by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), have ransacked the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus.

Videos circulated online Sunday showed the militants tearing down the poster that depicted martyred Iranian anti-terror commander General Qassem Soleimani and Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, at the diplomatic mission's exterior.

They also broke the windows of the embassy and looted its offices.

All the Times the US Allied With Soleimani Against Common Enemies, Giving Him Air Support at Tikrit | Informed Comment - 11 Jan 2020 |

Soleimani played a key role in helping defeat ISIL in Iraq, where he was a de facto and even tactical U.S. ally.

Since the U.S. political establishment and press has been demonizing Gen. Qasem Soleimani since he was rubbed out by Trump, it is perhaps worth complicating the story--especially now that Trump is accusing him of having targeted not one but four U.S. embassies. Trump is a notorious and compulsive liar, and there is no reason to think that charge is true. The prime minister of Iraq says he invited Soleimani to Baghdad for peace negotiations with Saudi Arabia and then Trump just suddenly blew his guest away. Soleimani came openly on a commercial flight and went through passport control with his diplomatic passport. His arrival in Baghdad was not part of a covert operation to hit Americans.

Nor was he a terrorist; terrorists are non-state actors. He was a general in the Iranian military. Soleimani fought in the Iran-Iraq War of 1980-88, which was a defensive war on Iran's part, since Iraq aggressively invaded under Saddam Hussein. The United States supported Saddam to the hilt in his aggression. So you'd have to say that in the 1980s Soleimani was doing something heroic, whereas the Reagan administration was doing something shameful. Reagan even ran interference for Saddam at the U.N. when Iran brought a complaint about the Iraqi use of chemical weapons.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Soleimani trained the Badr Corps, the Iraqi paramilitary of the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), which is now the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq.

In Syria, Soleimani fought ISIL and al-Qaeda linked groups, making him a de facto ally of the U.S., though his hard line pro-Shiite policies also did alienate Sunni Syrians. But many Syrian opposition groups had hooked up with al-Qaeda or ISIL well before 2015, when Soleimani began intervening directly in Syria at the request of the government of Bashar al-Assad. Sunni Syrians don't forgive him for his role in the taking of, say, East Aleppo. But it is also true that his forces helped defeat groups that praised al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri and even took orders from him.

From intelligence to armed operations, transformation of Turkey's foreign ministry sparks global concerns | Nordic Monitor - 10 Oct 2024 |

The creation of a highly controversial armed unit within Turkey's foreign ministry, under the leadership of Hakan Fidan -- the former intelligence chief and current foreign minister -- raises serious concerns for Turkey's partners and allies.

Fidan's decision follows his earlier transformation of Turkey's diplomatic service into an extensive intelligence network, conducting espionage in foreign nations, including NATO allies. Despite warnings and protests over similar aggressive spying activities during his decade-long tenure as head of Turkey's National Intelligence Organization (Milli İstihbarat Teşkilatı, MIT), Fidan remains undeterred, with the full support of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for these clandestine operations.

Fidan, who became foreign minister in 2023, stated in a September 19 interview that the new unit would not only be responsible for the physical security of Turkish diplomatic missions abroad but will also handle cybersecurity and counterintelligence efforts.

Turkey: accusations 'disgraceful black propaganda' | Al Arabiya - 29 Oct 2020 |

But in a written statement sent to Al Arabiya English by Turkey's Consul General in Dubai, Conkar himself rejected the allegation of bribery and instead alleged that the Nordic Monitor was affiliated with the movement allegedly behind the 2016 Turkish coup attempt

"The allegation of bribery in the news article, referring as its source to the website 'Nordic Monitor' owned and run by persons known to be affiliated to the Fetullahist Terrorist Organization (FETO), is a disgraceful utterance of completely ungrounded slanders that serves as black propaganda," Conkar said, in the statement sent by Turkey's Consul General in Dubai Ilker Kilic.

"Moreover, these hateful slanders are based on the remarks of a person who personally took an active role in the July 15 coup attempt of FETO," Kilic added.

FETO is the name the Turkish government uses to refer to the Gulen movement inspired by exiled Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen, who the government alleges was behind the failed coup in 2016.
