Rosenwald's site, the Gatestone Institute | The Intercept - 22 Sept. 2017 |
The rise of Alternative for Germany, the new far-right political party competing in the upcoming federal election, has unsettled the consensus-driven, moderate politics of postwar Germany with its rabid anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim rhetoric, unabashed nationalism, and winking gestures embracing the country's Nazi past.
Election-watchers expected a flood of fake news and inflammatory social media aiding Alternative for Germany, known by its German initials, AfD, to come from Russia. But one of the major publishers of online content friendly to the far-right party is an American website financed in large part and lead by Jewish philanthropist Nina Rosenwald.
Rosenwald's site, the Gatestone Institute, publishes a steady flow of inflammatory content about the German election, focused on stoking fears about immigrants and Muslims. In one of the most recent posts, the website warns of the construction of mosques in Germany and claims that Christianity is becoming "extinct."
The Gatestone posts, which are often translated into German, are regularly promoted by AfD politicians and AfD-related social media groups to justify the party's crusade against Chancellor Angela Merkel's open-door refugee policy.
One viral Gatestone story claimed that Germany was "confiscating homes to use for migrants." The piece -- which was shared by AfD supporters, including Thomas Rudy, a senior AfD politician in the central German state of Thuringia -- claimed that vacant homes in Hamburg were seized by local authorities seeking new housing solutions for the "hundreds of thousands of migrants from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East."
The article closed with a question about what might happen next: "Will authorities now limit the maximum amount of living space per person, and force those with large apartments to share them with strangers?"
Local German press, however, condemned the Gatestone story as false. A single house in Hamburg went into temporary trusteeship after several apartments at the home remained vacant. "Refugees did not play a role in the district's decision," fact-checking website Correctiv noted.

German populist AfD adopts anti-Islam manifesto | Parlementaire Monitor - May 2016 |
The German right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has adopted an explicitly anti-Islam platform, saying Islam is not a part of Germany.
The document adopted on on Sunday (1 May) calls for a ban on the full body Islamic veil for women, and a ban on minarets and the Muslim call to prayer as "Islamic symbols of power" in Germany.
AfD, which has representatives in eight of 16 state assemblies, has gained popularity with its tough stance against chancellor Angela Merkel i's welcoming refugee policy.
The party was founded in 2013 to oppose the use of German taxpayers' money to bail out other eurozone countries. After much infighting, it has increasingly shifted to the right, harnessing German concerns over some one million asylum seekers Syrian war refugees who have arrived to the country since last year.
"Courage, truth, Germany" were the main themes of the two-day party congress attended by over 2,000 delegates in Stuttgart.
The 1,700-page party document also called for an exit from the euro, reaffirmed traditional family values, proposed to reinstate military service for young men and better border control, and rejected the "ideology of multiculturalism".

The Gatestone Institute's personnel include Nina Rosenwald (President), and Naomi H. Perlman (Vice President). Amir Taheri is the Chairman of Gatestone Europe. John R. Bolton, the former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, served as Gatestone's chairman from 2013 to 2018.
Bolton resigned to become National Security Advisor for President Donald Trump. Bolton was paid at least $310,000 by the organization. Its authors include Nonie Darwish, Alan Dershowitz, Raymond Ibrahim, Denis MacEoin, Daniel Pipes, Raheel Raza, Khaled Abu Toameh, Geert Wilders, Janusz Wójcik, Bat Ye'or, Josef Zbořil and Dexter Van Zile.
Rebekah Mercer, [indeed with John Bannon of Cambridge Analytica and Emergate infamy], a billionaire heiress known for her donations to right-wing causes, was listed as a member of the Board of Governors of Gatestone in April 2017. After the foreign policy-focused website LobeLog inquired about her role in the organization, Gatestone removed all information about her from their website. The IRS Form-990 filing for tax year 2017 did not list Rebekah Mercer as either a member of the board of trustees, an officer of the organization, or an employee. It was later revealed that Mercer Family Foundation (of which Rebekah Mercer is a key officer) gave $150,000 to Gatestone in 2014 and 2015.
Anti-Muslim bias
The Gatestone Institute has been frequently described as anti-Muslim, regularly publishes false reports to stoke anti-Muslim fears, and has published false stories pertaining to Muslims and Islam. Gatestone frequently warns of a looming "jihadist takeover" and "Islamization" of Europe, leading to a "Great White Death". Gatestone authors have a particular interest in Germany and Sweden, and frequently criticize leaders such as Macron and Merkel. The organization has been regarded as being part of the counter-jihad movement.

The non-profits who received the donations included the American Freedom Defense Initiative ( (founded by Pamela Geller, American Freedom Law Center (founded by David Yerushalmi, the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (founded by Cliff May, former vice-chair of the Republican Jewish Coalition), Middle East Forum (founded by Daniel Pipes) and the David Horowitz Freedom Center.
A number of them are listed as anti-Muslim hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
A large number of the funders are far-right Jewish supporters of Israeli settlers and right-wing Israeli political parties. There is a nexus between Islamophobia and Israeli ultra-nationalist ideology. The Israeli far-right has fueled the career of political leaders like Bibi Netanyahu, who made alliances with Islamophobic, anti-immigrant European nations like Poland and Hungary.
