US Uses 3rd Veto to Block Ceasefire Resolution

by Oui Wed Feb 21st, 2024 at 06:15:48 AM EST

The leading western power has lost all legitimacy as a broker for peace in the Middle East or anywhere in the world. No moral setting, just the might of the gun as coercion to get its way. Europe has joined in this miserable adventure and too has lost its established credibility of a peacemaker. #WeAreNato #WeAreUnited

Israeli forces fired on food convoy in Gaza, UN documents and satellite analysis reveals | CNN |

UNRWA’s director, Tom White, said the convoy had been hit by Israeli naval gunfire and shared two photographs on X, formerly Twitter, showing a flat-bed truck with a hole where its cargo had been, and boxes of supplies scattered on the road. The hole was in the side of the truck that was facing out to sea, according to CNN’s geolocation of the images, indicating it had been hit by a munition fired from that direction.

CNN reviewed satellite imagery taken two hours after the incident that shows three Israeli missile boats a few kilometers offshore. These boats have formed part of a regular deployment since the start of the war, which the IDF has said is aimed at conducting surveillance and attacking Gaza from the west. In December, the IDF said their navy had “struck hundreds of targets and provided support to soldiers on the ground.”

“It’s really difficult to see how this could be a legal attack,” Janina Dill, co-director at Oxford University’s Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict, told CNN of the February 5 incident. “At a minimum it would look like a very serious violation of international humanitarian law. Whether it’s also criminal then depends on questions of intent, which is something that needs to be established in a court of law.”

UNRWA’s head legal advisor, Philippa Greer, said she was on the convoy when it was hit and posted on X to say that the team were “extremely lucky” no one was injured.

Afterwards, the convoy still requested permission to proceed through an Israeli checkpoint that supervises entry into northern Gaza, but it was denied entry.

Scenes remind me of the Dutch hunger winter 1944-45

The Hunger Winter: the Dutch famine of 1944-45 | Anne Frank Foundation |

The liberation of the south of the Netherlands in the autumn of 1944 affected the occupied west of the Netherlands in a bad way. The Dutch government in London called for a major strike in railway transport to support Operation Market Garden on 17 September 1944. 30,000 railway workers went on strike. The trains stopped running until the end of the war. But as a punitive measure, the Nazis blocked food transports to the provinces of North and South Holland for six weeks. Using their own trains, the Germans had no trouble taking care of their own supplies.

Amnesty International

Agnes Callamard, Amnesty’s secretary general, said on X that the US veto “displays a callous disregard for civilian suffering in the face of a staggering death toll”. The statement also said that Washington “has brazenly wielded and weaponized its veto to strongarm the UN Security Council, further undermining its credibility and ability to live up to its mandate to maintain international peace and security”.

Doctors Without Borders

Avril Benoit, executive director of Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF) USA: “By vetoing this resolution, the US stands alone in casting its vote against humanity. The US veto stands in sharp contrast to the values it professes to uphold. By continuing to provide diplomatic cover for the ongoing atrocities in Gaza, the US is signaling that international humanitarian law can be applied selectively — and that the lives of some people matter less than the lives of others …. The US veto makes it complicit in the carnage in Gaza.”

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry expressed “regret” at the veto and stressed the “need now more than ever to reform the Security Council to carry out its responsibilities in maintaining peace and security with credibility and without double standards”.

... in truth nearly every Arab state has long viewed the Palestinians with "fear and loathing," Crocker says. This is especially true of Egypt, which will continue to refuse to admit Palestinians from across the border, he says.

See my diary on said topic ... Muslim Brotherhood, Morsi and Islamic State in Sinai

For Crocker to generalize, means he is just a dumbass, an Islamophobe or an a$$hole ...

Oral History Ryan Crocker

With the upheaval in Syria and U.S./NATO failed attempt to overthrow Bashar Al-Assad, Jordan accepted Syrian war refugees, but no Palestinians due to a balancing act after the Black September uprising of 1971. Palestinians right of return

The United Nations General Assembly adopts resolution 194 (III), resolving that "refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbours should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date, and that compensation should be paid for the property of those choosing not to return and for loss of or damage to property which, under principles of international law or equity, should be made good by the Governments or authorities responsible."

Israel builds `militarized belt' across Gaza for long-term security control | The Cradle |

The Israeli army is rushing to complete a fortified east-west corridor south of Gaza City to split the strip in two, blocking displaced Palestinians from reaching northern Gaza and cementing Tel Aviv's military occupation ahead of the planned ground invasion of Rafah in the south.

Israeli defense officials who spoke with the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) say the road bisecting Gaza - called the "Netzarim Corridor" - is part of Tel Aviv's "plans to maintain security control over the enclave for some time."

The invading troops have razed and demolished numerous houses and buildings to make way for a one-kilometer buffer zone north and south of the corridor, including the Turkish Hospital, the Al-Aqsa University campus, and the entire villages of Mughraqa and Juhor al-Dik in the eastern Gaza Strip.

The corridor will also run through the former grounds of the Netzarim Settlement, which was evacuated in 2005 as part of former prime minister Ariel Sharon's disengagement from Gaza.

Olmert: Netanyahu is 'purging' West Bank of Palestinians | MEMO |

Former Israeli premier Ehud Olmert accuses Netanyahu of 'purging' West Bank of Palestinians

Describing Netanyahu's government as a "gang", Olmert wrote in the Israeli daily Haaretz that "the supreme aim of the duo National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich is not the occupation of Gaza."

"Gaza is just the introductory chapter, the platform this gang wants to build as the foundation upon which the real fight they are eyeing will be conducted: the battle for the West Bank and the Temple Mount," he said, referring to the flashpoint Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, using its name in Judaism.

Israeli Navy carries out 'extensive' drills in preparation for potential war on Lebanon border | TOI - today |

Israel has warned it can no longer tolerate Hezbollah's presence along its border following the October 7 atrocities and has warned that should a diplomatic solution not be reached, it will turn to military action to push Hezbollah northward.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz warned Friday that Israel "will not be patient much longer for a diplomatic solution in the north." Katz shared a clip on social media from a Channel 12 report Thursday evening which said Israel sent an official warning to the UN Security Council that Iran is continuing to send arms to Hezbollah in breach of UN Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Lebanon.

"If the dramatic intelligence information we revealed before the Security Council doesn't lead to a change, we will not hesitate to act," tweeted Katz, after the report claimed Israel's letter to the UNSC details the types of weaponry Iran is supplying Hezbollah as well as via which routes and on what dates.
