The Trail of Tears

President Andrew Jackson's Message to Congress 'On Indian Removal' (1830)

The Cherokees vs. Andrew Jackson | Smithsonian |

John Ross and Major Ridge tried diplomatic and legal strategies to maintain autonomy, but the new president had other plans

All the while, white settlers kept coming.

The state governments did little to discourage them, ignoring federal treaties and even abetting the taking of Indian land through bribery, fraud and coercion.

When the tribes turned to Washington for redress, federal officials proved ineffectual or hostile, depending on the administration. One by one the other major Southern tribes--the Chickasaws, the Choctaws, the Creeks and the Seminoles--signed treaties that required them to uproot to the far side of the Mississippi River. But the Cherokees held out.

They finally succumbed in 1838, when they were marched 800 miles into an extremely bitter winter. The survivors of the journey to what is now Oklahoma would call it the Trail of Tears. The exodus was a communal tragedy, as it had been for the other tribes. But in the case of the Cherokees, their resistance and defeat were reflected as well in the rise and collapse of the extraordinary partnership between Ross and Ridge.

Shortly before the American Civil War, the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and permanent state of racism ... goal of white supremacy. Fascism today in the US, Europe and Israel.

Is the White House an American iconic image built by the hands of slaves? | by Democrats Ramshield on Jul 29th, 2016 |

(Written by an American expat living in Germany)

Recently Michelle Obama touched off a firestorm when she remarked that in the White House which slave labor helped build was now the playground of her two young daughters, as a statement in her view about how far America had come.

The Two Wolves Within

Excellent writing from another era at BooMan's Pond ...

The Two Wolves Within | by infidelpig on 31 July 2005 |

The other night reading ghostdancer's diary, I was overcome with rage, not anger, pure out and out rage such as I have not known in many years.

It was not at the diary, it was about the treatment of the Native American Human Beings and the general American Public, in relation to current and past events against human rights.

It brought back a memory, of a time 33 years ago when I took my brother's body home for burial on his reservation in Wisconsin. He was a Menominee Indian, and we had served together in the Marine Corps, and in every sense of the word, we were Brothers. Not by the same parents, but both our bloods flowed through each other's veins, from transfussion's after combat injuries, and spiritual bonds. We had shared everything, food, shelter, crying, laughing, life, soul spirits, and death.

When I arrived in their hometown, I was greeted by the elders of the tribe, and his sister, and they made me a part of the family.  I stayed on the reservation with his grandfather, grandmother, and a uncle.

[...]

It is as if there are two

wolves inside me;

One is good and does no harm.

He lives in harmony with all

round him and does not take

offense when no offense was

intended. He will only fight

when it is right to do so,

and in the right way. He saves

all his energy for the right

fight.

But the other wolf, ahhh!

He is full of anger.

The littlest thing will set

him into a fit of temper. He

fights everyone, all the time,

for no reason.

He cannot think because his

anger and hate are so great.

It is helpless anger, for his

anger will change nothing.

Sometimes it is hard to live

with these two wolves inside

me, for both of them try to

dominate my spirit.

The boy looked intently into

his Grandfather's eyes and asked...

Which one wins, Grandfather?

The Grandfather smiled and

quietly said......

The one I feed.

Mitakuye oyasin!

Western countries oppose cease-fire in Gaza as humanitarian crisis unfolds | Anadolu Agency |

While US and UK block cease-fire efforts at UN, only a few European countries offer support for cease-fire

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak avoided mentioning a "cease-fire" while repeating the UK's position on "Israel's right to defend itself."

Sunak was asked by Scottish National Party deputy leader Mhairi Black: "How much worse does the situation have to get before he will join us in calls for a humanitarian cease-fire?"

He replied by reiterating that "Israel has the right to defend itself under international law" and the need for a safer environment "necessitates specific pauses, as distinct from a cease-fire."

Sunak said Hamas is responsible for the conflict and that his government will continue to urge Israelis to follow international law.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said in a speech at a session of the House of Representatives on the Israel-Hamas war that he was in favor of a "humanitarian pause in the hostilities" so that aid supplies could be delivered to Gaza.

Rutte said he believed that a cease-fire was undesirable and it would mean that Israel could no longer fight the threat from Hamas.

Saying he believes that a cease-fire is not possible at the moment and that it poses too many obstacles, he said that defending a cease-fire would isolate the Netherlands *).

*) the most ridiculous argument for a leader to defend and uphold human rights ... Ahh ... Rutte doesn't, does he ... career path to lead NATO offensive against Russia ... already a 10 year activity.

On the defensive shows weakness and not a good position to be in at the start of an election campaign 👎🏼

Making no headway with friend Netanyahu who simply wants to destroy the Palestinian people residing on land of Eretz Yisrael.

Obviously deception, VP in clothes of the protesters against Zionist policy in Gaza ...

Harris: "call for an immediate ceasefire, people are starving ..."

Just wondering if the VP traveled to Selma with the full approval of our leader?

Her call against official Israel policy could be taken as anti-semitic.

Interview with Holocaust Survivor and Anti-Zionist Activist Dr. Hajo Meyer (Video) | Truthout - 16 March 2011 |

Could you summarize this idea that you've often spoken and written about, the "ethical tradition of Judaism?"

So now we come to a very important point. In my view--I was educated in the tradition of enlightened Reform Judaism, without any relation to the prescripts of Halacha [Jewish religious law] but just to the socio-cultural heritage and the enlightened parts of Judaism ...

This ethical tradition is absolutely contrary to everything which is at the basis of Zionism. Because Zionism was created by Mr. [Theodor] Herzel and others at the end of the 19th Century, and in that era it was commonplace to be colonialist, to be racist, to be super-nationalist, to adore the nation-state--so the idea of France for the French, Germany for the Germanics, and then some state for the Jews. This all formed the basis for Zionism.

Zionism and Judaism are contrary to each other. Because Judaism is universal and humane, and Zionism is exactly the opposite. It is very narrow, very nationalistic, racist, colonialist, and all this. There is no "National Judaism." There is Zionism and there is Judaism, and they are completely different.

[Zionism] has nothing to do with Judaism. Because Judaism, as I learned it--the Reform Movement--that is highly, highly ethical. And so, you cannot connect Zionism with "highly ethical." You can only connect the words "aggressive," "oppressive," "stealing," "robbing" with Zionism. But not "highly ethical."
