Close to 450 extremist Arab and foreign nationals have arrived in Ukraine from Idlib to fight against Russia's forces, less than only three days after they left Syria, passing through Turkey.

Senior fighters from terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (the rebranded version of Jabhat Al-Nusra, i.e Al-Qaeda) have held a number of meetings with senior leaders in the Turkistan Islamic Party group and Ansar Al-Tawhid and Hurras al-Din groups, and agreed on allowing a number of all their fighters to enter Ukraine through Turkish soil.

US Strike targets ISIS leaders near Aleppo

US military kills three and arrests one in helicopter raid targeting senior ISIS leader responsible for planning terror attacks in the Middle East and Europe - the second strike against a warlord in the region in two weeks | Daily Mail - 17 April 2023 |

The US military has killed three and arrested one in a helicopter raid targeting a senior ISIS leader responsible for planning terror attacks in the Middle East and Europe, which is the second strike against a warlord in the region in two weeks.

Central Command (CENTCOM) revealed that US forces conducted a helicopter raid in northern Syria in the early hours of this morning.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) confirmed that the strike killed a senior ISIS leader and operational planner responsible for planning terror attacks in the Middle East and Europe as well as two other armed fighters.

Abraham Accords and invitation of Israel to become a full member of NATO under CENTCOM Command.

CENTCOM Commander Gen. Frank McKenzie Holds a Press Briefing, March 18, 2022

In Syria, the SDF, with our support, continues to root out pockets of ISIS, hold ISIS prisoners and administer the IDP camps.

As you saw with the recent attack on the Hasaka prison, remnants of ISIS remain both in Iraq and Syria, but our partners in both countries continue to do the fighting.

We have also successfully executed two long-range raids in Syria against successive leaders of ISIS, which resulted in both of their deaths.

These missions were important blows to the long-term viability of ISIS, and they demonstrate our continued commitment to the destruction of violent extremist organizations that threaten the homeland.

One area in Syria that I wish we had been more successful in, is in motivating international partners to repatriate ISIS prisoners from their countries. It's a burden that the SDF have primarily dealt with on their own, and the only long-term solution actually is repatriation.

We also need to reintegrate thousands of IDPs, many of whom are family members of ISIS fighters. We need to get them back into their communities in order to prevent vulnerable children from being indoctrinated into the ISIS ideology. And if we don't do that, we're going to face ISIS 2.0 down the road.

Of course, a long-term political solution to the civil war in Syria that accommodates all stakeholders would be helpful. And that would be key to preventing the return, in the long term, of ISIS.

I continue to see Iran as the greatest threat to regional security and stability. They furnish weapons, support and direction to proxies across the region who engage in acts of terror and undermine local governments, all advancing Iranian interests.

Iran's ballistic missile threat has continued to advance and expand with greater ranges and accuracy. CENTCOM has continued to watch Iran and its proxies as we act as a deterrent to Iranian attacks on U.S. interests.

I will say that our partners across the region fully recognize the Iranian ballistic missile threat and that does actually provide some opportunities for the United States to advance regional cooperation in the area of air defense.

CENTCOM is focused on operationalizing the Abraham Accords, as we brought Israel into our area of operations, and missile defense is one area of cooperation that all our partners understand. They all understand it's particularly important when you consider the threat that Iranian missiles pose.

While it continues to be nascent at this time, we have seen a willingness of traditional regional partners to work together in exercises with the Israeli Defense Force. Air defense is an excellent opportunity for cooperation because improving regional missile defense can begin with a sharing of information, which doesn't require any nation to approve the stationing of foreign forces on their territory. My hope is that this cooperation will continue to advance in the years to come.

On Afghanistan, the collapse of the Afghan government was not the result we desired when we began our withdrawal. That said, the courage and hard work of several thousand service members under difficult and dangerous conditions, which allowed the evacuation of 124,000 U.S. partner and Afghan nationals, is something the nation can be very proud of.

It came at the terrible cost of 13 U.S. service members and over 100 Afghan civilians killed, and that is a loss that I will deeply regret and I will regret it for the rest of my life. We owe these heroes our gratitude.

My final thought is that the security and stability of the CENTCOM region remains a vital national interest for the United States. It's a place with three of the world's most important maritime chokepoints, through which a large percentage of the world's global commerce transits, and of course, an even larger percentage of the world's energy-related commerce.

We remain the partner of choice in this region. Even as we adjust our posture and deployments to account for new global challenges, we still have many friends in this region who look to us for assurance and security.

The Best of Bad Options for Syria's Idlib | Crisis Group |

The Syrian regime vows to reconquer Idlib, the north-western zone hosting its hardest-core remaining jihadist opposition. But an all-out offensive would be calamitous. Turkey and Russia should recommit to their "de-escalation" deal for Idlib, bolstering it with measures that buy time for a lasting solution.

Syria's north-western governorate of Idlib and surrounding areas have avoided an all-out military assault - for how long, though, is unclear. This last opposition-held stronghold in Syria is home to nearly three million people, mostly civilians. It also hosts thousands of jihadist militants, alongside some of the Syrian regime's most committed oppositionists. Russia and the Syrian regime have indicated they are keen to retake the area at the earliest opportunity. But a Russian-backed regime offensive would create a humanitarian catastrophe, driving out huge numbers of refugees that could destabilise neighbouring Turkey and scatter militants who could wreak havoc globally. Turkey and Russia should instead recommit to their jointly guaranteed ceasefire in Idlib. Turkey should demonstrate more progress on the terms of the agreement, including by bolstering its military presence and expanding its patrols inside Idlib to discourage violations of the ceasefire, and by reopening the area's major highways to trade.

US seeking to deter Iran from strike on Israel, officials say | The Guardian |

US declaring commitment to Israeli security while also working to prevent regional war form an anti-Iran coalition, say officials

The US hopes that strong messages of solidarity and support for Israel from Joe Biden and the secretary of state, Antony Blinken, could still deter Tehran from seeking to hit a target in Israel. A strike would mark a dangerously significant escalation in a long-simmering war, fought until now by proxy, or by strikes in third countries, such as Lebanon and Syria.

Blinken spoke by phone to Chinese, Turkish, Saudi and European counterparts "to make clear that escalation is not in anyone's interest and that countries should urge Iran not to escalate," state department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters on Thursday.

Biden said on Wednesday that Israel could rely on "iron-clad" US backing, and Blinken called the Israeli defence minister, Yoav Gallant, to tell him that Washington would "stand with Israel against any threats by Iran and its proxies".

Nevertheless, if Iran does strike Israel directly, the US is likely to urge caution in Israel's response, in an effort to forestall an uncontrollable escalation into a conflict that could draw in the considerable US forces in the region.

Ironclad support to make escalation with Hezbollah in Lebanon and Iran possible

US officials say much will depend on the specifics of any Iranian attack. If Israel intercepts incoming missiles or drones, or if they fall harmlessly wide of their mark, the Biden administration will appeal to Netanyahu's government not to act rashly. If any Iranian attack causes significant Israeli casualties either on Israeli soil or at any Israeli mission or institution abroad, however, Israel would be entitled to a forceful response in the eyes of the administration.

The head of US Central Command, Gen Michael E Kurilla, arrived in Israel on Thursday, Pentagon spokesperson Major General Pat Ryder told journalists, reportedly to coordinate the response to the anticipated Iranian action with his Israeli counterparts.

The possibility of an Israeli conflict with Iran or with its Lebanese ally, Hezbollah, is one of the reasons the Biden administration has given for resisting calls from many in the president's own party to restrict arms supplies to Israel over the conduct of its war in Gaza.

’Disastrous': Israel-Iran tensions test limits of US policy amid Gaza war | Al Jazeera |

Biden's ’ironclad' backing of Israel is coming into conflict with the US's stated goal of averting regional war, analysts say.

The brinkmanship and resulting tensions have put further strain on Washington's foreign policy. Already, the US is caught between two seemingly conflicting priorities: offering unconditional support for Israel and preventing the conflict in Gaza from expanding.

"Biden is doubling down on a formula that so far has been absolutely disastrous," said Trita Parsi, executive vice president at the Quincy Institute, a think tank that promotes diplomacy.

Parsi said Biden should have rebuked Israel for attacking the Iranian embassy on April 1, violating international law and endangering US troops in the region.
But, he explained, the Biden administration is rewarding the Israeli government by promising to support it instead.

The US -- unlike some of its Arab and Western allies -- has not condemned the Israeli strike on the Iranian diplomatic facility in Syria, which killed seven members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including two generals.

The White House, however, was quick to distance itself from the strike, stressing that the US was not involved in it.

Qatar, Kuwait ban any attack from their air bases, airspace on Iran | PressTV Iran |

Qatar and Kuwait have banned any use of their airspace and air bases for attacks against Iran amid heightened tensions between Iran and the Israeli regime following an Israeli attack early this month on an Iranian diplomatic mission in Syria.

Reports on Saturday indicated that both Qatar and Kuwait had issued directives to the United States stressing that the US military will not be allowed to use air bases in the two countries for carrying out any potential airstrikes on Iran.

Qatar and Kuwait have also indicated that their airspace will not be available for any military action against Iran.

The US has military aircraft at the Ali Al Salem Air Base and Ahmed Al Jaber Air Base in Kuwait. The Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar is also the largest US air base in the West Asia region.

The directives issued by Iran's two Arab neighbors come amid reports showing that Iran is preparing to respond to an Israeli airstrike that killed two of its senior military commanders in its consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus on April 1.

Israel puts Golan, Nevatim, Dimona, Eilat residents on impact standby | Arab News |

Israel's military put the northern part of the occupied Golan Heights as well as Nevatim, Dimona and Eilat on standby for possible impact from Iranian drone launches early on Sunday, instructing residents to stay close to bomb shelters.

The Golan was captured from Syria in a 1967 war. Nevatim is the site of an Israeli air base. Israel has a nuclear reactor on the outskirts of Dimona. Eilat is Israel's southern Red Sea port, which has come under repeated attack by Yemen's Houthis.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army said it sounded sirens in a kibbutz near the Lebanon border early Sunday, after Iran launched a drone and missile attack on Israel.

"Sirens sounded in Kibbutz Snir, northern Israel," the army said in a statement.

Strike on 'Israel' more successful than expected, 14 Apr
The Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, announced on Sunday that two important Israeli military sites were targeted in Iran's response.

According to Bagheri, the Israeli intelligence's headquarters in "Mount Hermon" and the Nevatim Air Base were destroyed in the operation carried out earlier today, dubbed Truthful Promise.
[...]

beneath the veil of "U.S. and Israeli official" Saturday evening drone swarm headlines
Bagheri pointed out that the attack, which was carried out with ballistic and cruise missiles [!], "was planned to target the airbase from which the Israeli aircraft that attacked our consulate departed."

"A considerable number [i24news LIVE: "dozens," 40, 300 or 100 intercepted Iranian] drones and cruise and ballistic missiles have been used in this operation with well-thought-out tactics and proper planning, as neither the Iron Dome nor the Zionist regime's missile defense shield could take any significant action against this operation."

That Axios "unclear target" I posted yesterday? NSA Watson's "number of hours" stopwatch? After hours, Barak re-wrote it top to bottom, but did not incorporate Saturday's Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, and Syria air-space status alerts, although League press already reported that Jordan, in particular, helped to intercept some missiles in transit to Israel. I don't wonder why. Forewarned is forearmed. I suppose that Iran's eagerly anticipated but belated "retaliation" was scheduled by all parties interested in managing Israel's logistic limitations and unbridled design to prosecute war on trrism of the "islamist" persuasion.

14 Apr abstract: multi-polar thrones of deterrence
Even as the US disengages from the region, fear of a hostile Iran United States is no longer the central organising principle for the Middle East

The geopolitical cards have just been reshuffled. The long shadow war between Iran and Israel, characterised by deniable operations, sabotage and spookery, has come out in the open in a five-hour drone and missile barrage from Tehran to Jerusalem, with hate.

Iran's so-called axis of resistance can no longer be regarded as a gang of proxy militias, they are part of a proactive force, summoned into being in the savagery of October 7 and dedicated to fraying the links between Israel and the United States, its main security provider.

Biden to Netanyahu: Take the Win, We Won't Support a Counterattack | Israeli Media |

According to an unnamed senior official who spoke with Axios, Biden told Netanyahu that the joint effort by Israel, the US, and other countries led to the failure of the Iranian attack. Out of over 300 drones and missiles launched at Israeli territory, 99% were intercepted.

"You got a win, take the win," Biden reportedly told Netanyahu, and also said that the US will neither participate in any offensive retaliatory operation against Iran nor support such operations.

As a reminder, Iran claims that its attack is a retaliation for the assassination of a high-ranking Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp's general in Damascus on April 1st. Although this hit was attributed to Israel, Jerusalem never assumed responsibility.

Today (Sunday), Biden will convene the G7 leaders to coordinate a diplomatic response to Iran's "brazen attack," the president said in a statement. The UN Security Council is also expected to convene today, at the request of the Israeli ambassador.

Earlier today, Iran—and its proxies operating out of Yemen, Syria, and Iraq—launched an unprecedented air attack against military facilities in Israel. I condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms.

At my direction, to support the defense of Israel, the U.S. military moved aircraft and ballistic missile defense destroyers to the region over the course of the past week. Thanks to these deployments and the extraordinary skill of our service members, we helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles.

I've just spoken with Prime Minister Netanyahu to reaffirm America's ironclad commitment to the security of Israel.

Netanyahu, Empowered by Biden's Grant of Impunity, baits Iran into his genocidal Gaza War | Informed Comment |

Iran struck because Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on April 1 had the consular annex of the Iranian embassy in Damascus bombed, killing high-ranking Iranian officials, including Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi and seven other officers of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Coprs (IRGC).

Those officials were there at the invitation of the Syrian government, and embassies are protected from military attack by the Vienna Convention.
Iran item Article 51 of the United Nations Charter for its counter-strike on Israel, which guarantees states the right of self-defense. Embassies are considered national soil.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's clerical Leader, had said Wednesday at his Eid al-Fitr sermon:

"The consulate and embassy institutions in any country are the soil of that country. The evil regime made a mistake and must be punished and will be punished.

The events in Gaza showed the evil nature of Western civilization to the world. They killed thirty-odd thousand defenseless people; aren't these human? Do they not have rights?

They showed what kind of civilization this is. A child is killed, in the mother's arms. The patient dies in the hospital. Their power cannot touch ... the men of the resistance; so they target the lives of family members, the lives of children and the oppressed, the lives of old men."

Briefing Security Council on Reported Israeli Attacks against Iran's Diplomatic Premises in Syria, Top UN Official Urges Efforts to Prevent Further Escalation

In a meeting urgently convened today following reports of Israeli attacks on Iran's diplomatic premises in Syria, a senior United Nations official told the Security Council that the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel must be respected and further escalation must be avoided.

"The rules-based international order is essential for international peace and security, which this Council is mandated to maintain," said Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for Middle East, Asia and the Pacific in the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations, in his briefing to the 15-member body.

[...]

In the ensuing discussion, many delegations asserted that any attack on diplomatic and consular premises violates the Charter of the United Nations as well as the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.  They also expressed grave concern that such an incident could further intensify the regional conflict.

France's delegate said that yesterday's strikes in Damascus have taken place amid heightened tensions in the region, pointing out that since the 7 October Hamas terrorist attack, Iran and its regional partners have borne heavy responsibility for this escalation.

The speaker from the United Kingdom said that Iran has continued to support Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Hizbullah, militias in Syria and Iraq and the Houthis.  In addition to attacking Israel, these groups have been responsible for the attacks against international shipping, including the deaths of innocent mariners, and attacks against international forces in Iraq and Syria, he added.
In that vein, the representative of the United States urged Iran and its proxy and partner groups to avoid exacerbating regional tensions.

Categorically rejecting those allegations, Iran's delegate reported that seven missile airstrikes from the occupied Golan Heights intentionally targeted her country's diplomatic premises in Damascus, including the consular section building and the Ambassador's residence.  Tragically, these heinous attacks resulted in the martyrdom of seven Iranian personnel.  Alongside the complete destruction of the consular building, the Embassy's administrative parts also suffered significant damage due to the explosions, she added.

Gantz: Iran will pay the price in 'correct manner and time' | JPost |

"The event is not over"

Far-right National Security Minister MK Itamar Ben-Gvir called Gantz's comments "hollow western slogans by those who remain deep in the conception. In order to create deterrence in the Middle East, the boss must go nuts," Ben-Gvir wrote on X. In a video statement earlier on Sunday, Ben-Gvir said that "Israel's cannot give a fumbling response," adding that "policies of containment and proportionality passed from the world on October 7."

In a video statement of his own, on Sunday, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said that "this is the time for leadership that is capable of returning deterrence that has the courage to restore security to the citizens of Israel, not with slogans, but with action."

"The eyes of the entire Middle East and the entire world are on the State of Israel. If our reaction resonates throughout the Middle East for generations to come - we will win," he added.

UNSC emergency meeting: Iran urges UN condemnation of consulate building attack in Syria

Members of the United Nations Security Council are calling for de-escalation and accountability, following an Israeli air strike on the Iranian consulate building in Syria, which killed 14 people.

Iran's UN ambassador condemns Israel's attacks in Syria, calling them `terrorist' acts violating international law.

Iran told the council it reserves the right to take a decisive response. Something many on the council were warning against - but know could very well be likely.

Russia's UN envoy criticizes Israel's attacks in Syria amid Gaza war, cites violations of ceasefire resolution. Condemns assault on aid workers and Iranian consulate.

Chinese, Saudi FMs hold phone talks on Middle East's regional situation, bilateral ties| Xinhua News |

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Saudi counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, held phone talks on Monday regarding the regional situation in the Middle East as well as China-Saudi Arabia ties.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said that China appreciates Saudi Arabia's emphasis on resolving issues through diplomatic means, and that China is willing to work together with Saudi Arabia to avoid further escalation of confrontation in the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia is an important partner of China in the Middle East, said Wang, adding that China stands ready to strengthen communication and coordination with Saudi Arabia, follow through on the important consensus reached by the heads of state of the two countries, continuously deepen political mutual trust, and promote bilateral relations to higher levels.

For his part, Faisal said that Saudi Arabia, deeply concerned about the current escalating situation in the Middle East, hopes that the situation will return to the normal track as soon as possible.

Noting that Saudi Arabia highly expects China to play an active and important role in this regard, Faisal said the Saudi side is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with China to promote an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, start the implementation of the two-state solution, and help achieve stability in the Middle East at an early date.

Saudi Arabia fully trusts China, and is willing to push for the sustainable development of bilateral cooperation, he added.

Iran has warned US that Israeli response would set off harsh retaliation -- minister | TASS |

DUBAI, April 16. TASS. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Tehran has warned Washington that any new Israeli attack would prompt a harsh and decisive retaliation.

The minister made the statement as he spoke by phone with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, according a statement by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, which was posted to Telegram.

"We communicated a clear warning to the White House that in the event of provocations and the repetition of terrorist attacks against Iran's security and interests, Tehran's response and subsequent actions will be decisive, immediate and of great magnitude," Abdollahian said.

According to the statement, the Iranian minister also told his Chinese counterpart about "diplomatic efforts and legitimate measures taken by the Iranian armed forces against the insolence of the Israeli regime and the attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus."

Wang Yi said "China strongly condemned the strike on the Iranian diplomatic mission and believes that these actions violate and contradict international law."

"China and the Islamic Republic of Iran are strategic partners," he stated.

King Abdullah II: Jordan won't become `theater of war' between Israel and Iran | Arab News |

Jordanian King Abdullah II said Tuesday that his country must not become `the theater of a regional war' after Jordan intercepted multiple missiles and drones when Iran attacked Israel at the weekend.

The king reinforced the nation's commitment to upholding its security and sovereignty above all other considerations. He stressed Jordan's aim was to safeguard its own sovereignty rather than defend Israel.

Last weekend, Jordan was among a group of nations that helped Israel shoot down missiles, rockets and attack drones launched by Iran and its allies at Israel.

[...]

Most missiles and drones were shot down by Israel's Iron Dome defence system and with help from the US, Britain, France and Jordan.

Iran -- which labelled its attack an act of self-defence after a deadly Israeli strike on its Syria consulate -- warned Jordan it could be "the next target", a military source was reported as saying by Iran's Fars news agency.

US assured Israel that Iranian drones will be intercepted -- US journalist Hersh | TASS |

He also said that the US military contacted Russia and the United Kingdom while evaluating the potential of the Iranian attack

Prior to Iran's attack on Israel, the Pentagon assured the Jewish state that this retaliatory strike will be the best way to defuse tensions in the region after Israeli strike on Iran's diplomatic building in Syria, because Washington had no doubts that all missiles and drones will be intercepted, US journalist Seymour Hersh said in his blog on Substack.

"I am not allowed to name the American senior military officers and advisers who made the unusual faux missile attack happen. But it's important to say that President Joe Biden, whose foreign policy team was not involved in the process, accepted the high-risk plan and publicly urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose political career and personal freedom depend on keeping the war in Gaza going, and the rest of the Israeli leadership not to respond to Iran," the US journalist said.

He also assured that the US military contacted Russia and the United Kingdom while evaluating the potential of the Iranian attack. After consulations, a plan emerged to let Iran launch its missiles and drones and have its revenge while "understanding that the air forces of America, Europe, and the Middle East would track and destroy them all." The plan was exercised "with Iran's approval," the US journalist said.

The Pentagon leadership planned this operation without formally consulting with US President Joe Biden or White House officials. The US military was convinced that "there would never be formal approval for such a radical strategy."

"During the secret planning, the official said, America's allies were told: `We are going to share all the information about the fired Iranian drones and missiles we collect.' There was a tough session with a senior Israeli official who was informed, the American official said, that Israel had two options: one, `win easy' and let the American coalition destroy the missiles; or two, `lose the hard way' and respond with violence to the failed attack. `If you chose the hard way,' the Israeli was told, `you're on your own'," Hersh wrote.

On the evening of April 13, Iran launched drones and missiles towards Israel in response to what it called "repeated crimes," including an attack on the consular office of the Iranian Embassy in Damascus. Tehran said that that attack targeted Israel's military facilities. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed it intercepted 99% of the nearly 350 Iranian projectiles launched at Israel, saying that minor damage had been caused to Nevatim Air Base.
