Militarization of Kaliningrad is a threat to Polish and EU security | ECPM – 24 Jan 2017 |

The geopolitical situation in East and Central Europe is rapidly changing. One of the main threats for Poland and the Baltic States is the hyper(?) militarization of the Russian enclave Kaliningrad. ECPM MEP Marek Jurek pleas for a demilitarization of Kaliningrad, together with Polish MEP Kazimierz Michal Ujazdowski.

Since the new President of the United States, Donald Trump, outlined a rather isolationist policy when it comes to foreign policy it is vital that the EU and NATO take a clear and strong stance on defending the borders of countries as Poland and the Baltic States. In November of last year, this issue became more imminent as Russia deployed new state-of-the-art missiles that were used in Syria as well.

Any lingering on the issue of Russian missiles, being aimed at Eastern European countries, will only increase tension in the region. If NATO and EU Members consider it normal for Eastern European countries to be directly threatened by Russian missiles, then Eastern European security is seriously threatened. Instead of lingering we need an approach that is both inventive and courageous. A solution aimed at a demilitarization of Kaliningrad is clearly the best option. This could be reached by offering special international guarantees, confirming the sovereignty of the Russian enclave, in return. Until such an agreement has been reached the military strengthening of the north-eastern border of Poland is vital.

International news headlines on Slovakia and effect NATO unity

Robert Fico's election win in Slovakia defies European consensus with call to oppose arming Ukraine | ABC News Australia  - 2 Oct 2023 |

Analysts consider Mr Fico, who has previously served as prime minister, to be inspired by Hungary's nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has frequently clashed with the European Union.

"We are prepared to help with the reconstruction of the state but you know our opinion on arming Ukraine," Mr Fico said.

Slovakia is a member of the NATO military alliance, which is backing Ukraine against Russian President Vladimir Putin, but many of its people are sympathetic to Moscow's line that the West wants to annihilate it.

Mr Fico said Slovakia had bigger problems than the Ukraine issue, including energy prices and living costs, but his party would do everything possible to start peace talks.

    East-West Freedom of Press Under Attack | 28 April 2018 |

The rise of populist politics in Europe has weakened press freedom in a region where it was once most secure, according to Reporters Without Borders. China, Russia and Donald Trump also pose threats to journalists.

Hostility toward journalists and media poses a serious threat to democracies around the world, including within Europe.

As a region, Europe still ranks the highest on RSF's index, but its rating also dropped more than that of any other region this year.

Obstructionists Hungary and Slovakia will ease their opposition to Rutte if Romanian President Klaus Iohannis withdraws his candidacy, NATO circles say. Until this happens, Hungarians and Slovaks will awkwardly reject Iohannis, the only official candidate from another Eastern European country.

Current NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has repeatedly stated his intention to leave his position. However, this process is being delayed due to, among other things, the war in Ukraine. Until the fall of 2023, there were no clear contenders for the position of NATO Secretary-General.

Likud bill targeting NGOs that receive foreign funding is 'dead' - senior US official | TOI - June 2023 |

PM has ordered legislation be temporarily shelved and MK behind it says he's not giving up, but Biden aide says Washington doesn't expect it to be raised again

The bill states that any nonprofit group that engages in public advocacy two years before or after receiving a donation from a foreign government will lose 1its status as a public institution and will no longer be eligible for tax exemptions. In addition, those non-profits will be hit with a 65-percent income tax.

If passed, the legislation would likely cripple the ability of human rights organizations to operate in Israel and the West Bank, as many of them rely on funding from foreign governments.

Left-wing rights groups -- such as B'Tselem, Breaking the Silence, and the New Israel Fund -- have long been targeted by the Israeli right-wing and even the political center over their exposure of alleged Israeli human rights abuses against the Palestinians.

Right-wing lawmakers have sought to criticize the largely left-wing organizations by highlighting their source of funding and arguing that it represents interference in Israel's internal affairs.

Left-wing activists in turn point out that right-wing civil society groups also take funding from foreign investors. Those donors might be individuals as opposed to countries but the funds are often transferred with far less transparency, the left-wing activists maintain. Israel also funds civil society groups abroad with various political motivations.

Such Knesset legislation has been proposed in the past but, amid pushback from abroad, has never been approved.

WIESBADEN - With a foreign trade volume of 253.1 billion euros, the People's Republic of China was Germany's most important trading partner in 2023 for the eighth year running. However, the volume of foreign trade with China was only 0.7 billion euros higher than the foreign trade volume with the United States (252.3 billion euros). In 2022, the difference was 50.1 billion euros. In 2023, German trade in goods with China declined significantly, however, by 15.5% compared with 2022, while trade with the United States grew slightly by 1.1%. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the Netherlands was Germany's third most important trading partner after China and the United States, as in previous years, with exports and imports having a combined value of 214.8 billion euros (-5.5%).

WH Press Briefing: Karine Jean-Pierre and John Kirby | May 17, 2024, A/V (EN), 00:56:45
Q @ 00:09:40: What was your reaction to seeing Russian President Putin and Chinese President Xi exchanging hugs?
KIRBY: Exchanging hugs? Well, that's nice for them. Look. You have two countries here—leaders of two countries—that are clearly acting in various ways around the world um uh inimical to our national security interests, to the interest of many of our allies and partners. No surprise that these two leaders continue to try to develop this burgeoning relationship, but they're also two leaders that do not have a long history of working together um and officials in both governments that aren't necessarily all that trustful of the other. What they have in common is a desire to challenge the international rules-based order, challenge the network of alliances and partnerships that the United States enjoys, which President Biden has strengthened in his time in office, and to try to look for ways to bolster each other's um national security interests as well. So we didn't see anything coming out of this meeting that we were necessarily surprised by. I wouldn't go so far as to say, we weren't concerned about this relationship and where it's going. Of course, we are watching it closely, but I'd leave it that.
Q: Did you think that was a purposeful show of public display to send any kind of message to the U.S. or otherwise?
KIRBY: Oh, man, I'm not good at talking about personal, human bodily affection, one way or the other. So I think, I'll leave it to these two gents to talk about why they thought it was good to hug one another. I'll just tell you that- that- uh- we take seriously that the challenges that both countries represent, and we take seriously this burgeoning relationship betwee the two of them. That said, in Ukraine specifically, we have not seen President Xi rush to the effort to assist the Russian armed forces and provide lethal capabilities.
Background Press Call by National Economic Advisor Lael Brainard and Senior Administration Officials on President Biden's Actions to Protect American Workers and Businesses from China's Unfair Trade Practices, 13 May
With this announcement, the President is taking important enforcement action to raise tariffs in key sectors under Section 301 of our trade laws that will make sure that historic investments in jobs spurred by President Biden's actions are not undercut by a flood of unfairly underpriced exports from China in areas like EVs, batteries, vital medical equipment, steel and aluminum, semiconductors, and solar.

China is using the same playbook it has before to power its own growth at the expense of others by continuing to invest despite excess Chinese capacity and flooding global markets with exports that are underpriced due to unfair practices.

China is simply too big to play by its own rules.

Sullivan clashes with Del Toro over whether Navy secretary is prioritizing climate change over shipbuilding

A LACK OF CAPACITY AND LOSS OF `BLUE-COLLAR' WORKERS:

It's not just money that's keeping the United States from ramping up ship production. The industry is facing myriad problems, including a shortage of trained shipbuilders, supply chain issues, constantly changing requirements, and contractors who are more concerned about shareholders [damn capitalism] than increasing capacity.

"There are a lot of challenges in the shipbuilding industry, and they actually date back to the 1980s, when we gave up on commercial shipbuilding in this country and lost so much of the talent in the shipbuilding industry," Del Toro said. "That was compounded tremendously by COVID China fugitive lab virus. And the enormous challenges that we have with regards to blue-collar labor in this workforce that actually impacts across all programs because the industry and even the Navy and its public shipyards simply don't have the people that are necessary to work in our shipyards."

Del Toro said there has been a "greening" of the workforce, which used to be comprised of blue-collar workers with decades of experience and now is made up of younger workers who have plenty of other job options that often are less arduous and pay better. "We provided $100 million of resources to the shipyard so they can provide $5,000 bonuses to their shipyard workers for the first year if they stay in place and another $5,000 if they stay in place throughout the construction of the ship itself," Del Toro said.

The U.S. Navy's logistics force is not sized to meet the demands of great power war.
