Gérald Darmanin, the interior minister, said 5,000 police would be on duty in Paris and its surrounding areas to "ensure that the radical right and radical left do not take advantage of the situation to cause mayhem".
"Let's reject the climate of violence and hatred that is taking hold," prime minister Gabriel Attal wrote on Thursday on X, adding that violence and intimidation had "no place in our democracy."

Sunday's decisive second round is expected to result in the far-right, anti-immigration RN becoming the biggest party in parliament, whether or not it reaches the 289 seats needed for an absolute majority to form the next government.

F24 | Leftist alliance is 'ready to govern' after trouncing Macron's ruling party

These results mean France will have a hung parliament, with three major blocs but no clear majority. That leaves Macron in a position to negotiate with parties that have long been in opposition to him to try to form a coalition government.

"The president has the duty to call on the Nouveau Front Populaire to govern," declared left-wing leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon. The leader of La France Insoumise (LFI, radical left) party spoke from the restaurant La Rotonde Stalingrad [!], in northern Paris, where his party held its election night event, just after 8 pm. Mélenchon praised the electorate's efforts to obtain "a result that was said to be impossible"—a victory for the left.
"The president must bow" to the results of the left, he said, adding that the NFP alliance "will apply nothing but its program, all of its program." The projected breakdown among the left-wing parties was 73-80 seats for LFI, 60-64 for the Socialists, 33-36 for the Greens, and 11-12 to the Communists.

PUTIN ! Le Pen's party to fall short of a historic milestone - French election exit poll
The New Popular Front (NFP) will fail to secure an absolute majority in the legislature as it is expected to win between 177 and 192 seats in the second round, according to the estimates. It had previously secured 32 mandates in the 577-strong National Assembly in the first round last weekend. The left-wing coalition is closely followed by President Emmanuel Macron's liberal Ensemble coalition, which is expected to land between 152 to 158 seats in the second round.
Macron will not address the nation on Sunday, following the vote, the Elysee Palace said. The president will analyze the election results before making any further steps, his office said.

Viktor Orbán's trip to Moscow in breach of EU treaties, legal service says

The EU's legal service told member states on Wednesday that Orbán's actions had violated the bloc's treaties [?] that forbid any "measure which could jeopardise the attainment of the Union's objectives", according to three people familiar with the matter. He also violated a legal provision that calls on all members to perform foreign policy activities "unreservedly in a spirit of loyalty and mutual solidarity", they added.

economist | Ukraine has a month to avoid default
Ukraine is in desperate need of fiscal room. At the end of the year, its debt-to-gdp ratio will approach 94%—high for an economy with its rocky financial history and of its size. The sums that allies provide are impressive, but come in the form of artillery, tanks and earmarked funds, rather than cash. Only $8bn of America's recent package will go directly to Ukraine's government, an amount equivalent to just over a quarter of Ukraine's annual spending on social benefits, and even this is in the form of a loan. The eu is planning to offer a little more, but still only $38bn over three years.

The reticence of private-sector investors does not just reflect Ukraine's financial outlook. In a normal restructuring, creditors gamble on a country's economic prospects. Lending to a borrower at war also entails a second gamble: that it will win. "There has to be a country in existence to repay at the end of this," as a bondholder notes. A lot depends on the extent of Western support.

U R DOIN IT RONG, 2 July Global South "outreach"
The frontline of the Russo-Ukrainian war now extends into Africa and the Middle East, where Ukrainian special forces have been hunting Russian forces to erode Moscow's economic resources and influence.
According to a leaked top-secret U.S. intelligence document, Ukraine's military intelligence agency previously devised plans to attack Russian forces in Syria with clandestine Kurdish assistance in early 2023. The objective behind targeting Russian units in Syria was to potentially compel Russia to redirect its military assets from Ukraine to strengthen its defenses in Syria. Ukrainian officers considered training Syrian Democratic Forces operatives to strike Russian targets with unmanned aerial vehicle attacks.
Ukrainian Defense Intelligence has close ties to the CIA, which helped develop the top-secret Ukrainian intelligence organization after Russia's first invasion in 2014. Since its inception, it has had authority to collect intelligence outside Ukraine. According to the New York Times, Budanov's initial unit was known for its daring missions behind enemy lines, and he himself was trained by the CIA.
Ukraine has the capability to engage militarily in regions where Western powers might be hesitant to intervene, such as Sudan and southern Syria. The return on investment for a small amount of Ukrainian input from Western powers could be quite substantial. The West would be wise to provide Ukraine with more resources, including intelligence, to support its efforts to strike Russia wherever necessary.

NATO members promise €40 billion to Ukraine for next year, 3 July
After NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg initially proposed a multi-annual €100 billion proposal, the plan was debated, revised, and changed due to reluctance to give multi-year pledges and questions around burden-sharing among NATO allies.

On Wednesday, NATO countries reached an agreement to share the sum of €40 billion per year, based on the gross national income (GNI) of each country, a person familiar with the discussions told Euractiv. Contrary to the original Stoltenberg proposal, the money will not be pledged across several years, but for only one. After that, NATO will annually review this on the basis that this is a non-binding commitment. The pledge will most likely not contain new cash, three NATO diplomats told Euractiv.

strana | "Kiev's air defense is ending." Bild expert says 5 Russian missiles hit the Artyom weapons factory in Kiev - video(09.07.24)
This is what Bild military expert Julian Repke writes, analyzing the video of a missile strike on the Ukrainian capital, which is in the public domain. This military factory is located across the street from Lukyanovskaya metro station. In Ukraine, a hit on it was not officially reported.
"Not only two hospitals were hit yesterday. These images show how five (!) Russian cruise missiles hit the Artem ammunition plant in the capital of Ukraine. As I feared yesterday, the air defense of Kiev is coming to an end," commented Repke on the attack. The densest air defense barrier over the capital was penetrated by the Russians with a relatively small number of missiles. Based on this, we can assume that, despite the supply of Western defensive weapons, which has been going on for more than a year, air defense is still not enough to reliably cover even the capital.

The European Commission's assessment of how to define high-risk products relative to sectoral [?] rules, 4 July
The document on the interplay between the 2014 Radio Equipment Directive (RED) and the AI computer programming Act is the first known interpretation of how the Act will treat AI computer programming-based safety components [hardware?], laying down the logic that could be used to classify other types of products as high-risk.
mystries of telecommunication
The RED covers more than old-school radios: it refers to wireless devices, using, for example, WiFi, or bluetooth.
The AI computer programming Act lists a barrage of previously enacted sectoral regulation that might be used to classify AI computer programming products as high-risk. More documents like the one on RED can be expected.
Annex I/XII: List of Union Harmonisation Legislation
Annex II/XII: List of Criminal Offences
Annex III/XII: High-Risk Computer Program Systems
In addition to electronics, products like medical devices, aviation, heavy machinery, even "personal watercraft" and lifts are covered by harmonised legislation relevant for the AI computer programming Act, so they might undergo a similar process as RED. The preliminary interpretation shows that similar self-assessment [!] standards likely cannot be used to remove the high-risk tag from AI computer programming products in these industries.

ChatGPT | European Union accuses Facebook owner Meta of breaking digital rules with paid ad-free option, 1 July
Meta began giving European users the option in November of paying for ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram as a way to comply with the continent's strict data privacy rules.
The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, said preliminary findings of its investigation show that Meta's "pay or consent" advertising model was in breach of the 27-nation bloc's Digital Markets Act.... Meta's model also doesn't give users the option of a service that's less personalized but still equivalent to its social networks [?!], it said.
ChatGPT | Meta charged with violating Europe's landmark tech competition law
"In the commission's preliminary view, this binary choice forces users to consent to the combination of their personal data and fails to provide them a less personalized but equivalent version of Meta's social networks," the European Commission said in a statement. EU officials said Meta should offer a third option for users who don't consent to tracking or pay a subscription fee—a free version of its apps that doesn't rely on personal data for displayed ads.

The company can defend itself and the investigation is expected to conclude in March 2025, officials said. Fines for breaching the DMA can reach 10% of the company's annual turnover. Meta's total revenue in 2023 was $134.9 billion (€125.3 billion).

Russian ruble trade unaffected amid outage, traders and banks say

Trade in the Russian currency seemed to have suffered few if any impacts from the IT outages on Friday, with a ministry saying the unimpeded operations showed that the country's import substitution in software development had been a success.

According to Reuters news ageny, currency traders said their software and operating systems were functioning as usual, while the largest lender, Sberbank, also said it had no problems.

One currency trader told Reuters: "Everyone has long been preparing for the possibility of Microsoft being cut off due to sanctions. The current incident is a test of how well we have prepared. So far, everything is fine."

Russia's Digital Development Ministry said in a statement that the global outage had shown that Moscow's strategy of promoting domestic alternatives to software from foreign companies such as Microsoft were working.

Microsoft began ceasing the provision of cloud services to Russian organizations earlier this year in line with EU sanctions over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

At least one-fifth (20 percent) of the `two-percent floor' must be invested in major equipment and associated R&D. In other words, hundreds of billions of taxpayer money should be directly invested in highly lucrative private arms companies to produce weapons of war.

ChatGPT | Europe eyes car chips over-capacity as next battleground with China , 14 May value chain bankruptcy
The European Commission will start to question microchip suppliers and customers about < wipes tears > legacy chips and whether there is a dependency on China supplies, it told POLITICO in a statement, with first results expected by the end of summer.

Officials fear a challenge to the bloc's market power on so-called legacy microchips—older-generation technology used in cars, household appliances, and medical devices. The move follows a similar one in the United States, where the government launched a survey on the topic in January.
In the past two [BIDEN ERA] years, the first round of the global chips war focused on more advanced chips. Washington rolled out a strategy in the past two years to cut off China from accessing high-tech microchips technology by curbing the export of designs and equipment to manufacture them. It pressured the Netherlands, Japan and other allies to block exports, most notably those of cutting-edge printing equipment made by Dutch tech champion ASML.
But officials should stay alert for Chinese state attempts to < wipes tears > overtake European [third country] microchips suppliers too, [Stiftung Neue Verantwortung expert Jan-Peter] Kleinhans said.

"There's a general trend of import substitution that they [G7] cannot stop. I think that train left the station," he said, referring to [Russia's and] China's practice—echoed in Europe and the U.S. too—to boost domestic companies to reduce dependencies on foreign regions.

The Biden administration has told allies it's looking at imposing tougher restrictions on companies still making advanced chip technology available to China despite existing export curbs, Bloomberg reported. Shares of ASML (ASML, ASML.AS), cited as a potential target, dropped over 10% after the Dutch chip gear maker posted solid quarterly earnings.

Meanwhile, the Republican nominee Trump questioned US defense support for Taiwan in a Bloomberg interview, suggesting the island claimed by China should pay for US protection. Chipmaker TSMC's (TSM, 2330.TW) shares fell more than 5%, having erased close to $30 billion in market value in Taiwan as stocks there slipped.

ASML sells huge amount of chip machines to China while it still can

ASML's Q2 figures exceeded analyst expectations. With 6.2 billion euros in sales and a net income of 1.6 billion euros, the Dutch chip machine maker is doing well for itself. The large share of Chinese sales will leave many in Washington puzzled, though.

Compared to the same quarter last year, orders for chip machines are up 24 percent. "We currently see strong developments in AI, driving most of the industry recovery and growth, ahead of other market segments," said CEO Christophe Fouquet.

China shares up sharply this year

The comparison with Q2 2023 offers more striking differences. For example, nearly half of ASML's new systems are going to be used for memory, not logic chips. Whereas the latter accounted for 84 percent of total end-uses last year, that figure is now only 54 percent. Moreover, the net amount from system sales fell from 5.6 billion to 4.7 billion euros, although that is still an improvement over Q1 2024.

The share of sales to China has been on the rise for several quarters. Taiwan bought up half of all ASML systems in Q1 2023, but now China is claiming 49 percent of the total share. This does not include the very latest EUV machines, which may not end up in China due to export restrictions. As a result, it's highly likely more than 1 in 2 ASML scanners are heading to China, as the most expensive options aren't available to it.

He has also called for "constructive negotiations" with Western powers over a renewal of thefaltering 2015 nuclear deal [JCPOA] in which Iran agreed to curb its nuclear programme in return for an easing of Western sanctions.
That was Raisi's sisyphusian task beside orienting Iranians' "worldview" toward diplomatic and economic security across Asia. Seyed Mohammad Marandi—author and Piers Morgan nemesis—was heard to say last night that taking up the wheels of sanctions relief and trade imbalance, rather than "reforming" Iranian value system, is his greatest appeal to the voting public. Marandi also asserted that Raisi's popularity, absorbed by Pezeshkian, stimulated turnout from the sidelines of the first round. He did not discredit Pezeshkian's mandate as Iran Int'l and the like attempted to do.

16,384,403 + 13,538,179, or 48% of 61,452,321 eligible voters.

But Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has rejected suggestions that the low turnout represents a rejection of his rule.
Today  the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei congratulated president-elect Pezeshkian and presumably his populist agenda. "For-Iran"
reiterated the guiding principle of the country's foreign policy as "Neither East nor West," outlining his government's commitment to advancing national interests in the foreign policy sphere.

Pezeshkian underscored the importance of prioritizing relationships with neighboring nations and expanding global connections to foster the country's growth while emphasizing the necessity of diversifying foreign policy options to enhance trade and engagement.

On many occasions, he reiterated his commitment to abiding by the Islamic Republic's legal framework and the policies defined by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian, My message to the new world, 12 July
The United States also needs to recognize the reality and understand, once and for all, that Iran does not—and will not—respond to pressure. We entered the JCPOA in 2015 in good faith and fully met our obligations. But the United States unlawfully withdrew from the agreement motivated by purely domestic quarrels and vengeance, inflicting hundreds of billions of dollars in damage to our economy, and causing untold suffering, death and destruction on the Iranian people—particularly during the Covid pandemic—through the imposition of extraterritorial unilateral sanctions. The U.S. deliberately chose to escalate hostilities by waging not only an economic war against Iran but also engaging in state terrorism by assassinating General Qassem Soleimani, a global anti-terrorism hero known for his success in saving the people of our region from the scourge of ISIS and other ferocious terrorist groups. Today, the world is witnessing the harmful consequences of that choice.

The U.S. and its Western allies, not only missed a historic opportunity to reduce and manage tensions in the region and the world, but also seriously undermined the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) by showing that the costs of adhering to the tenets of the non-proliferation regime could outweigh the benefits it may offer. Indeed, the U.S. and its Western allies have abused the non-proliferation regime to fabricate a crisis regarding Iran's peaceful nuclear program—openly contradicting their own intelligence assessment—and use it to maintain sustained pressure on our people, while they have actively contributed to and continue to support the nuclear weapons of Israel, an apartheid regime, a compulsive aggressor and a non-NPT member and a known possessor of illegal nuclear arsenal.

The attacks have emptied over 40 settlements and have decimated the economy, business, education, and daily life across Israel's north.

Have Kenya's police been involved in targeted killings? | BBC Africa News |

Sharif's killing could have been an unfortunate accident, but his death and the recent arrest of nine police officers over the July disappearance of two Indian nationals and their driver, have once again shone a spotlight on Kenya's police service.

For decades, specialised or elite squads within the police, such as the now disbanded Special Services Unit (SSU), have been accused of carrying out extrajudicial killings, abductions and torture of suspects.

The cases have been an open secret but the recent announcement by newly elected President William Ruto of the closure of the SSU was the first time a head of state had openly spoken about atrocities committed by police.

A consortium of international and local NGOs say independent investigations have linked more than 600 killings to special units within the police service .

Trump v US (25.04.24), oral argument audio | transcript

SAUER: ...If a president can be charged, put on trial, and imprisoned for his most controversial decisions as soon as he leaves office, that looming threat will distort the president's decision-making precisely when bold and fearless action is most needed. Every current president will face de facto blackmail and extortion by his political rivals while he is still in office. The implications of the Court's decision here extend far beyond the facts of this case. Could President George W. Bush have been sent to prison for obstructing an "official proceeding" or allegedly lying to Congress to induce war in Iraq? Could President Obama be charged with murder for killing U.S. citizens abroad by drone strike? Could President Biden someday be charged with unlawfully inducing immigrants to enter the country illegally for his border policies?
and many helpful hints on how to compose the ruling ...

The Supreme Court's decision is a failure of law in the purest sense. It is, in fact, politics masquerading as law. The generals think that a truce would be the best way of freeing the roughly 120 Israelis still held, both dead and alive, in Gaza, according to interviews with six current and former security officials. Known collectively as the General Staff Forum, Israel's military leadership is formed from roughly 30 senior generals, including the military chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, the commanders of the army, air force, and navy, and the head of military intelligence.

The military's attitude to a cease-fire reflects a major shift in its thinking over the past months as it became more clear that Mr. Netanyahu was refusing to articulate or commit to a post-war plan. That decision has essentially created a power vacuum in the enclave [sic] that has forced the military to go back and fight in parts of Gaza it had already cleared of Hamas fighters.
jpost | Hezbollah doubles down on correlating Gaza ceasefire with calm in North, 2 July
The New York Times on Tuesday reported that there was tension between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and IDF over the next steps in Gaza now that the intense phase of the army's military campaign against Hamas is winding down.
"Israel proposal"
"I do not know who these anonymous sources are, but I am here to make it unequivocally clear: This will not happen," Netanyahu said. "The war will end once Israel achieves all of its objectives, including the destruction of Hamas and the release of all of our hostages." He also dismissed claims in the article that the IDF was low on munitions needed for its war with Hezbollah and thus wanted to end the Gaza war.
In Washington, State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said "restoring calm" along the northern border between Israel and Lebanon "continues to be a priority."
The US "believes that a ceasefire in Gaza could bring about a calm to the conflict in the North, as well as creating conditions" for Israeli and Lebanese civilians who have not been able to live in their homes along the border since the IDF-Hezbollah violence heated up in October, he said.
Israel has agreed to the deal but not to Hamas's call to amend it. Under the terms of the deal, the first stage would see a ["]lull["] to the war and the release of 33 [?] hostages, while ["]indirect talks["] would be held on the question of a permanent ceasefire.

Hamas has given its initial approval of a U.S.-backed proposal [FKA S/2735] for a phased cease-fire deal in Gaza, dropping a key demand that Israel commit up front to a complete end to the war, a Hamas official and an Egyptian official said Saturday.
10 June 2024
(a) Phase 1: an immediate, full, and complete ceasefire with the release of hostages including women, the elderly and the wounded, the return of the remains of some hostages who have been killed, the exchange of Palestinian prisoners, withdrawal of Israeli forces from the populated areas in Gaza, the return of Palestinian civilians to their homes and neighborhoods in all areas of Gaza, including in the north, as well as the safe and effective distribution of humanitarian assistance at scale throughout the Gaza Strip to all Palestinian civilians who need it, including housing units delivered by the international community.
2 Feb 2024 ----------------
Release Israeli detainees: women, children (under 19 yrs), the elderly, and the sick, in exchange for a specific number of Palestinian prisoners. Emergency humanitarian aid and fuel daily into Gaza. Construct temporary shelters and medical facilities in the Strip. Permit UN agencies to provide humanitarian services. Temporary cease fire and redeployment of Israeli forces from populated areas in the Gaza Strip to facilitate exchange of detainees and prisoners. Begin negotiation regarding requirements for restoring complete calm.
The apparent compromise by the militant group, which controlled Gaza before triggering the war with an Oct. 7 attack on Israel, could deliver the first pause in fighting since November and set the stage for further talks on ending a devastating nine months of fighting. But all sides cautioned that a deal is still not guaranteed.
reuters | Hamas accepts US proposal on talks over Israeli hostages, Hamas source says
The militant Islamist group has dropped a demand that Israel first commit to a permanent ceasefire before signing the agreement, and would allow negotiations to achieve that throughout the six-week first phase, the source told Reuters on condition of anonymity because the talks are private....That was in sharp contrast to past instances in the nine-month-old war in Gaza, when Israel said conditions attached by Hamas were unacceptable.

A spokesperson for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath. On Friday his office said talks would continue next week and emphasised that gaps between the sides still remained.

< inhale >
The two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing negotiations, said Washington's phased deal [FKA "Israel Proposal"] would start with a "full and complete" six-week cease-fire during which older, sick and female hostages would be released in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

During those 42 days, Israeli forces would withdraw from densely populated areas of Gaza and allow the return of displaced people to their homes in northern Gaza [?!], the officials said.

cnn | Troubled US military pier near Gaza to be permanently removed as soon as next week, US officials say, 9 July JLOTS watch
according to four US officials, after it is reconnected one more time to deliver any remaining humanitarian aid in Cyprus and on the floating dock several miles offshore.

The $230 million temporary pier operation, which has been plagued with problems since its inception, has been at the Israeli port of Ashdod for nearly two weeks because the Pentagon decided sea conditions were too rough for it to operate. Last month marked the third time that the pier has been disconnected from Gaza because of inclement weather.

centcom.mil: "more than 8,831 metric tons (over 19.4 million pounds)" (28.06.24)
Aid delivered to Gaza via the pier piled up on the beach for several weeks last month as the World Food Programme evaluated whether it was safe to distribute inside the enclave [sic]. The Israel Defense Forces had early on agreed to provide a wide security perimeter around the pier system and the aid operation, but an Israeli hostage rescue operation very nearby the pier in early June raised additional security concerns for aid workers.
tabloid USA: "Plagued by looting..." (11.07.24)
The aid distribution restarted late last month, after millions of pounds of aid—roughly 6,000 pallets worth—had accumulated on the Gaza shoreline, CNN previously reported.
defense.gov | Update on DOD Support to Humanitarian Efforts in Gaza, 11 July JLOTS watch
[D]ue to technical and weather-related issues, CENTCOM personnel were unable to re-anchor the pier to the shore. At no time did U.S. personnel enter Gaza.

The pier and support vessels and equipment are returning to Ashdod where they will remain until further notice. A re-anchoring date has not been set.

"more than 8,100 metric tons (nearly 20 million pounds)": stick a fork in it.
As highlighted in the initial deployment announcement [8 March 2024], the pier has always been intended as a temporary solution to enable the additional flow of aid into Gaza during a period of dire humanitarian need with limited access, supplementing land and air channels of delivery. The pier will soon cease operations, with more details on that process and timing available in the coming days.

haaretz | IDF Ordered Hannibal Directive on October 7 to Prevent Hamas Taking Soldiers Captive, 7 July encore
In the coming weeks, the IDF is expected to publish the results of its investigation of the incident, which will answer the question of whether Brig. Gen. Barak Hiram, the commander of Division 99 who was in charge of operations in Be'eri on October 7, was employing the Hannibal procedure. Did he order the tank to move ahead even at the cost of civilian casualties, as he stated in an interview he gave later to the New York Times?
The IDF spokesman responded by saying that "the army has been fighting for six months at high intensity on several fronts, focused on attaining the war's objectives. In tandem, the IDF has begun conducting internal investigations of what transpired on October 7 and the preceding period. The aim of these investigations is to learn and to draw lessons which could be used in continuing the battle. When these investigations are concluded, the results will be presented to the public with transparency."
thelancet | Counting the dead in Gaza: difficult but essential, 5 July
Armed conflicts have indirect health implications beyond the direct harm from violence. Even if the conflict ends immediately, there will continue to be many indirect deaths in the coming months and years from causes such as reproductive, communicable, and non-communicable diseases. The total death toll is expected to be large given the intensity of this conflict; destroyed health-care infrastructure; severe shortages of food, water, and shelter; the population's inability to flee to safe places; and the loss of funding to UNRWA, one of the very few humanitarian organisations still active in the Gaza Strip.

In recent conflicts, such indirect deaths range from three to 15 times the number of direct deaths. Applying a conservative estimate of four indirect deaths per one direct death to the 37,396 deaths reported, it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186,000 or even more deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza. Using the 2022 Gaza Strip population estimate of 2,375,259, this would translate to 7% of the total population in the Gaza Strip. A report from Feb 7, 2024, at the time when the direct death toll was 28 000, estimated that without a ceasefire there would be between 58,260 deaths (without an epidemic or escalation) and 85,750 deaths (if both occurred) by Aug 6, 2024.

ChatGPT | Voters kick all the Republican women out of the South Carolina Senate, 1 July featured state primary result

The only three Republican women in the South Carolina Senate took on their party and stopped a total abortion ban from passing in their state last year. In return, they lost their jobs. Voters removed Sens. Sandy Senn, Penry Gustafson, and Katrina Shealy from office during sparsely turned out [!] primaries in June, and by doing so completely vacated the Republican wing of the five-member [?] "Sister Senators," a female contingent that included two Democrats and was joined in their opposition to the abortion ban.

For Republicans, the departure of Senn, Gustafson and Shealy likely means there will be no women in the majority party of state Senate when the next session starts in 2025. It could also mean that women will not wield power for DECADES in the fiercely conservative state where they have long struggled to gain entry into the Legislature....

Women prohibited from politics by Dutch Bible party

Until 2013, the SGP (Staatkundig Gereformeerde Partij or Reformed Political Party) was unique among Dutch political parties in that, based on its interpretation of the Bible, it prohibited women from standing for political office. The party regards women bearing government or legislative responsibility to be at odds with the biblical vocation of women. Despite condemnation from women's organisations, the Dutch state was reluctant to intervene, stating a clash of fundamental rights: non-discrimination versus religious freedom.

What GOP's European abortion example looks like in France, 3 July
Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. both cited European abortion limits in their opinions in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case [opinions]. More recently, South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham Cracker, who has called for a national ban on abortion < wipes tears > after 15 weeks of gestation, told reporters on Capitol Hill that a first-trimester  [12 weeks] abortion limit would put the U.S. in line with other peer nations < wipes tears >.
archive public property
"Forty-seven of 50 European nations have national limits on abortion between 12 and 15 weeks," Graham said in April after former President Donald Trump said he would leave abortion policies to the states. "This is the civilized world's position." But in one of those countries, France, which bars elective abortions after 16 weeks gestational age (14 weeks fetal age < wipes tears > ), the comparison falls flat.

For one thing, France holds the distinction of being the only nation that has enshrined the right to an elective abortion in its constitution. And while French law bars elective abortions < wipes tears > after the first trimester, that ban includes SWEEPING EXCEPTIONS, including medical exceptions that IN SOME CASES allow women to access legal abortion through the third trimester [26 weeks].

Chinese firms probed over mandatory pregnancy tests - media, 17 July
More than a dozen companies in China have been sued for allegedly making female job applicants take pregnancy tests, which is illegal under Chinese law, the country's official Procuratorate Daily news outlet reported on Monday [15.07.24].

scmp | 'Men only' job adverts prompt women's rights group in China to take on employers over gender discrimination (18.02.21): In October 2014, they launched the Weibo account "Inspection Squad for Workplace Gender Discrimination"
After going through the records of two major public hospitals and a medical exam center, investigators found that 168 women seeking work at 16 different companies had taken pregnancy tests as part of their pre-employment health checks. They also said the companies' recruitment and staff insurance records indicated that the women had been asked to take these tests, though in most cases the requests were not part of the officially documented requirements, but given verbally during job interviews.

The reason prospective employers gave for the practice and their reluctance to hire pregnant women was the excessively high maternity benefits they would have to pay after the new employee takes maternity leave.

Chinese law prohibits employers from including pregnancy tests in pre-employment physical checks, along with other forms of gender discrimination, such as asking female applicants about their marital status or plans to have children. However, according to research last year by the Inspection Squad for Workplace Gender Discrimination watchdog, male applicants still have an advantage over women in some spheres, including government jobs. The research found that out of nearly 40,000 jobs in the national civil service, 10,981 were marked as men-only compared with 7,550 for women.

Trump's 'Black jobs' rhetoric trades on racial stereotypes and fear of immigrants, 2 June
It's clearer now than ever before. Former President Donald Trump is a malignant narcissist, a racist and a liar, but more than anything he is a tyrant.
bls.gov | Employment Situation Summary - May, 7 June
Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (3.8 percent), adult women (3.4 percent), teenagers (12.3 percent), Whites (3.5 percent), Blacks (6.1 percent), Asians (3.1 percent), and Hispanics (5.0 percent) showed little or no change in May. (See tables A-1, A-2, and A-3.)
On Thursday, during his debate with President Joe Biden, Trump made this outlandish statement about Black Americans, migrants and jobs: "They're taking Black jobs now, and it could be 18, it could be 19 and even 20 million people. They're taking Black jobs, and they're taking Hispanic jobs, and you haven't seen it yet, but you're gonna see something that's going to be the worst in our history."

For the record, there's no such thing as a Black job. There is no racial qualification for any job, and to say that there are Black jobs is ignorant at best.  We need to ensure equality of opportunity for all citizens and for those seeking to become citizens. Only then can we move toward a more just and equitable future for everyone.

For a century US politicians have attempted to integrate descendants of US slaves into the halls of power connecting the several branches of the federal government. Remembering the Black Woman Biden Blocked from the Supreme Court | AEI - 1 Feb 2022 |

The following month, when Justice Sandra Day O'Connor announced her retirement, Janice Rogers Brown was on Bush's shortlist to replace her. She would have been the first Black woman ever nominated to serve as an associate justice of the Supreme Court. But Biden appeared on CBS's "Face the Nation" to warn that if Bush nominated Brown, she would face a filibuster. "I can assure you that would be a very, very, very difficult fight and she probably would be filibustered," Biden said. Asked by moderator John Roberts "Wasn't she just confirmed?," Biden replied that the Supreme Court is a "totally different ballgame" because "a circuit court judge is bound by stare decisis. They don't get to make new law."

Joe Biden didn't just compromise with segregationists. He fought for their cause in schools, experts say. | NBC News - 25 June 2019 |

Joe Biden helped give America the language that is still used to oppose school integration today, legislative and education history experts say.

In a 1975 Senate hearing, the legendary civil rights lawyer Jack Greenberg had something to say to freshman Sen. Joe Biden.

Greenberg, longtime director of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, took Biden to task for sponsoring a bill that would limit the power of courts to order school desegregation with busing. It was a move that followed the wishes of many of Biden's white constituents in Delaware.

The bill "heaves a brick through the window of school integration," said Greenberg, one of the lawyers who had won the Brown v. Board of Education case that ended legal school segregation 21 years earlier. And according to Greenberg, Biden was the man with his hand on the brick.

How a Young Joe Biden Turned Liberals Against Integration | Politico - 2015 |

Forty years ago, the Senate supported school busing--until a 32-year-old changed his mind.

... as a court-ordered integration plan loomed over Wilmington, Delaware, in 1974, Biden's constituents transformed their resistance to busing into an organized--and angry--opposition. So Biden transformed, too. That year, Joe Biden morphed into a leading anti-busing crusader--all the while continuing to insist that he supported the goal of school desegregation, he only opposed busing as the means to achieve that end.

This stance, which many of Biden's liberal and moderate colleagues also held, was clever but disingenuous. It enabled Biden to choose votes over principles, while acting as if he was not doing so.

My maternal grandmother lived in The Hague (Fr. La Haye), was devout Catholic in a dominating, discriminating Calvinist society, took teacher nuns to task for showing preference for children of well to do parents in contrast to those considered poor and lower class. Around the year 1910.  A strong character ... she would have taken a Joe Biden to task for lacking backbone ... fifty years to preserve his seat in Congress and longer.

12 former aides say Biden has prioritized politics over 'fair policymaking' on Gaza, 3 July
The dozen signatories on a joint statement represent a wide spectrum of government staff, including former employees of the State Department, Department of Interior, and White House, as well as former military officers.
The Administration's policy in Gaza is a failure and a threat to U.S. national security. America's diplomatic cover for, and continuous flow of arms to, Israel has ensured our undeniable complicity in the killings and forced starvation of a besieged Palestinian population in Gaza. This is not only morally reprehensible and in clear violation of international humanitarian law and U.S. laws, but it has also put a target on America's back. This intransigent policy risks U.S. national security and the lives of our service members and diplomats as has already been made evident with the killing of three U.S. service members in Jordan in January and the evacuations of diplomatic facilities in the Middle East, and also poses a security risk for American citizens at home and abroad.
They resigned in protest at different times over the nine months of Israel's war against Hamas following the U.S.-designated terrorist group's Oct. 7 attack.
The statement lays out six policy recommendations for the administration to implement, calling for the U.S. to "faithfully execute the law" related to < wipes tears > American weapons deliveries to Israel.

Hamburg group signs deal for Chinese wind turbines in German waters, 3 July
On 2 July, Luxcara, a German renewables developer based in Hamburg, announced it had struck a deal—known as a "preferred supplier arrangement"—with Chinese powerhouse Mingyang for 16 offshore wind turbines to be built in the North Sea by 2028.

"By deciding for the world's most powerful offshore wind turbine, we will be able to expedite Germany's energy transition, while fostering much-needed competition in the industry," said Holger Matthiesen, who manages the Waterkant project that won a bid to build turbines last year.
Luxcara's announcement comes three months after lawmakers approved into EU law the Net-Zero Industrial Act, which aims to defend the EU's share in key clean-tech industries like wind and solar, came into force.

"With this project, China gets access to critical infrastructure in Germany," said a spokesperson of WindEurope, the industry's lobby group in Brussels, adding that the "European supply chain would have been ready to deliver the wind turbines for this project."

Hydroelectricity shortfall drives electricity trade deficit in April
Reduced electricity generation has resulted in lower export levels as well as an increased reliance on imports. Imports of electricity from the United States climbed 79.0% year over year to 2.6 million MWh in April, while exports to the United States fell 64.4% to 1.7 million MWh. Canada is generally a net electricity exporter, but April marked the third consecutive month that imports have exceeded exports. In April, exports fell to the lowest level recorded since this series was redesigned in 2016.
The ["]switchover["] in our electricity trade balance reveals the shortcomings of an energy strategy that now emphasizes de-carbonization over energy security, leaving customers vulnerable to supply shortfalls and higher prices.
financialpost | Alberta updates electricity rules to help lower utility bills (11.03.24): "Economic withholding" is when power producers deliberately hold back [embargo?] some of their supply, offering it at a higher price. The practice is not illegal, but has been highly criticized recently as one of the factors contributing to soaring consumer power bills in the province, as well as a growing number of occurrences where power prices in the province have been higher during off-peak periods than during periods of peak demand.
Canada's plan to lower greenhouse gas emissions largely depends on hydro power supplying most of our rapidly growing energy needs. We remain ambivalent about nuclear power, with Ontario and New Brunswick the only two provinces producing it after the Parti Québécois government closed Quebec's only nuclear plant in 2012.

strana | Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance, Tax and Customs Policy Daniil Hetmantsev urged not to dramatize the heat

"At the risk of shocking the generations who were born and raised with air conditioners, let me remind you that 40 thousand years before they were born, humanity coped with the 'unbearable' heat using a bucket and a pond or well, which not only help to overcome any heat, but also make it fun. Call it a life hack and don't make a tragedy where it definitely doesn't exist," the MP wrote.

The Freeman Fire, formerly known as the Wash Fire, grew overnight and burned nearly 2,000 acres north of Tucson, prompting evacuations on Friday. The lightning-caused fire near Oracle spread as windy conditions pushed the fire in all directions and forced the evacuation of Willow Spring Ranch, the Department of Forestry and Fire Management [dffm.az.gov] said.
Tucson fire crews battled the fire since it started around 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Containment remained at 0% and officials said the blaze burned more than 1,750 acres.

The Gunpowder Plot was a failed attempt to assassinate King James I of England during the Opening of Parliament in November 1605.

The plan was organised by Robert Catesby, a devout English Catholic who hoped to kill the Protestant King James and establish Catholic rule in England. As part of the plan, Catesby intended to kidnap James's nine-year-old daughter Princess Elizabeth and install her as a puppet queen.

English Catholics had expected more religious tolerance under James I compared to the reign of his predecessor, Elizabeth I. James's wife, Anne of Denmark, was a Catholic, and the king initially appeared sympathetic to English Catholicism.

However, these hopes were dashed in early 1604 when in a speech to Parliament James I said he `detested' the Catholic faith. Days later, he ordered all Jesuit and Catholic priests to leave the realm.

Following the king's declaration, Catesby joined forces with other Catholic conspirators to bring down the Protestant government.

The Spanish Civil War (1936-39) was the bloodiest conflict western Europe had experienced since the end of World War I in 1918.

The war began on July 17, 1936, when generals Emilio Mola and Francisco Franco launched an uprising aimed at overthrowing the country's democratically elected republic. The Nationalist rebels' initial efforts to instigate military revolts throughout Spain only partially succeeded.

The MP noted that the 70-point resolution calls on all 53 OSCE participating states to make efforts to de-occupy Crimea and all occupied territories of Ukraine by supporting the Peace Formula and the Crimean Platform, as well as to establish a Special Tribunal to prosecute the Russian Federation for crimes committed during the aggressive war against Ukraine, and to conduct international and national investigations into mass crimes committed by the Russian army. The document also emphasizes the need to quickly launch a mechanism for using frozen Russian assets for the benefit of Ukraine and suggests that OSCE countries join the Agreement on the International Register of Damage Caused to Ukraine by Russian Aggression.

HRC: Yes, I remember
PP: I put it in the constitution of Ukraine, a special article.
HRC: Yes, I rember that, yes.
PP: What does your inner circle—
HRC: Look, I think that—we are working vey hard to persuade the Germans and the Americans to move on this. I don't know what the final decision will be, but, you know, as you say, Rasmussen and Yermak and others are working very hard.
PP: I think that dictators didn't learn their lesson after Gaddafi.
HRC: Ah, interesting. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think that's true.
PP: As I mentioned, the main threat is Trump. The main threat is Trump, because he will ask for money back. It will be disaster. After all, he wants to end the conflict on Russia terms, and if you remember, when I was president we were looking for his connections with Russia. But when Trump became president, they just started interfering with me. Tehy were already looking for any compromising evidencee for President Biden on Burisma and even on you, and his administration were asking me, can you help on this.
HRC: I know. He's a very bad guy. I know personally from having to run against him. He's a very, very bad guy. But Petro, let's take one step at a time. Let's get this material. Let's get it to your soldiers. Let's try to get some of the Russian frozen assets. Let's work on NATO. You know, if the worst thing happens, if Trump were to win, we will all have to figure out what to do. But I don't think it's going to happen. I really don't think it's going to happen.
PP: Yeah, I think that we can request a hearing in the parliament to find something on him before the election. I think that—he has problems in the court. This is because of that um mutiny that was made in 2020. I think that we can attack him from different sides before the election.
HRC: Good. Well, anything you could do to attack him, I'm all for it, because he's a very dangerous man.
PP: Yeah, I can send my people in the US from the embassy

Ukrainian efforts to sabotage Trump backfire | Politico - 11 Jan 2017 |

Ukrainian government officials tried to help Hillary Clinton and undermine Trump by publicly questioning his fitness for office. They also disseminated documents implicating a top Trump aide in corruption and suggested they were investigating the matter, only to back away after the election. And they helped Clinton's allies research damaging information on Trump and his advisers.

Merkel, who has served as an election observer in Ukrainian presidential elections dating back to 1993, noted there's some irony in Ukraine and Russia taking opposite sides in the 2016 presidential race, given that past Ukrainian elections were widely viewed in Washington's foreign policy community as proxy wars between the U.S. and Russia.

"Now, it seems that a U.S. election may have been seen as a surrogate battle by those in Kiev and Moscow," Merkel said.

The court declined to hear a set of cases challenging Illinois' ban on certain semi-automatic rifles and high-capacity magazines. The court also said it would not take up several challenges to a federal law barring people with felony convictions from having guns.

In 2022, the court DRAMATICALLY EXPANDED [nope] Second Amendment rights by declaring in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen that modern gun restrictions must adhere to historical practices < wipes tears >. Then, last month, in United States v. Rahimi, the court seemed to back away from the most EXTREME CONSEQUENCES of that dread history-based test: It upheld a federal law banning alleged domestic abusers from having firearms. But the constitutionality of many other gun laws remains in doubt in light of the Bruen ruling, with lower courts divided on how to apply the history-based test....
