Kamala Harris Surge?

by Frank Schnittger Thu Aug 22nd, 2024 at 03:08:25 PM EST

Just a few weeks ago Trump was leading Biden in almost all the key battleground states. He had beaten Biden in the Presidential debate, had had a triumphant coronation at the Republican National Convention, and was approaching sainthood as the bullet missed his head by mere inches. His devoted followers interpreted that as a sign from God that he was truly the blessed one. Even his anointment of JP Vance as his Vice Presidential nominee could be dismissed as "not very important" when it turned out to be unpopular with the voters.

Then Biden stepped down in an act of self-sacrifice for the common good. He finally recognised that the American people did not regard him as capable of another four years in one of the toughest jobs on earth. Like a good scape-goat he took much of the mixed baggage of his administration with him. Kamala Harris (59) had been a low key Vice President and could be presented as a relatively new broom.

No longer forced to choose between an 81 year old and a 78 year old the American people, collectively breathed a sigh of relief. Bill Clinton, now also 78, was able to boast at the Democratic National Convention that he was still younger than Trump. Trump's targeting of Biden's age has come back to bite him in the rear.

Clinton also urged the audience to listen to Trump's words when he speaks, saying, "The next time you hear him, don't count the lies. Count the I's -- his vendettas, his vengeance, his complaints, his conspiracies ... he's like a tenor trying to get his lungs open by singing, 'me, me, me, me, me.' " There are levels of narcissism most American voters find hard to take.

Trump has struggled to find an effective attack line against Harris, and so the JP Vance line about miserable childless cat women running the country has continued to hang in the air, not helped by Republican supporters holding up Jizz cups of fake semen at their rallies. That must go down really well with women voters, those having difficulty having the family they so badly want, and with conservative religious types. "Hey, look at me, I don't need no IVF"

It also highlights the consequences of Trump's conservative Supreme Court appointees overturning Roe vs. Wade and the consequent wave of anti-abortion (and even anti-IVF) judgements and legislation in many states. It is the one issue which most unites Democrats and divides Republicans.

Trump was 3.2% ahead when Biden dropped out of the race:

A graph of a graph of the national poll Description automatically generated with medium confidence

There has been a 6.5% turnaround and now Harris is 3.3% ahead: Support for the leading third party candidate, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has also slumped by 4%.

A graph of a graph Description automatically generated with medium confidence

Looking at the battleground states, the following picture emerges:

A screenshot of a voting table Description automatically generated

All data is taken from 538.com, one of the leading poll aggregators in the US. I never quote data from just one or a few polls, as the margins of error and variations are too large to be statistically significant when you are considering fine margins. Even the data above, based on numerous polls, should be treated with some caution. A lot depends on who turns out on the day.

Of the 6 most marginal battleground states which Biden won, Harris is currently ahead in five and has consolidated her position in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Arizona. Only in Georgia is she still behind Trump, where she has lost some ground. However, she has gained the lead in North Carolina for the first time and made up some ground in Florida.

If these poll averages turn out to be accurate, Harris will win by 303 electoral college votes to 235. If she loses North Carolina, and Arizona, the margin in the electoral college narrows to 276 to 262. If she loses Nevada as well the margin becomes wafer thin at 270 to 268. She basically cannot afford to lose any of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, or Michigan unless she has upset wins elsewhere.

So basically, the election is still too close to call, although it now has a slight lean towards a Harris win. However, it is worth remembering that Biden won the popular vote by over 7 million votes (4.4%), but still only won the electoral college by a little over 20,000 votes in Georgia and Arizona.

So far, the Democratic National Convention in Chicago has been a triumphant success, in stark contrast to the Mayor Daley led "police riots" which attacked peaceful anti-war demonstrators in 1968 and caused mayhem in Democratic party politics, leading to the defeat of Democratic candidate Hubert Humphrey by Richard Nixon.

Keynote speakers Joe Biden, Barack and Michelle Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Vice Presidential nominee Tim Walz have set the tone for a "joyful" national renewal in contrast to the dark and divisive days of the Trump era. Kamala Harris is due to accept the nomination this evening and her speech will be keenly awaited as she attempts to define herself in contra-distinction to Trump.

Nomination speeches are not for policy detail, and she faces criticism for avoiding in depth interviews and policy debates so far. But this convention has been about Democrats off all stripes coming together and trying to put forward a much more positive and harmonious vision for America. Democrats have started to edge further ahead of Republicans in voter's preference to lead Congress in a further sign that things are heading in their direction.

A graph of a political party Description automatically generated with medium confidence

We'll have to wait a week or so to see if the Convention leads to a further bump in their polls, but so far so good for Kamala Harris and her team. The next few weeks, and particular the debates with Trump will be critical in determining the final outcome. Most Americans don't really focus on the Presidential election unto September and a lot of undecided still have to make up their minds..

Next bump will be for Grump, not Harris 😅

The presidential matchup: Harris, Trump, Kennedy | Pew Research - one week ago |

Nationally, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are essentially tied among registered voters in the current snapshot of the presidential race: 46% prefer Harris, 45% prefer Trump and 7% prefer Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Following Biden's exit from the race, Trump's support among voters has remained largely steady (44% backed him in July against Biden, while 45% back him against Harris today). However, Harris' support is 6 percentage points higher than Biden's was in July.

In addition to holding on to the support of those who backed Biden in July, Harris' bump has largely come from those who had previously said they supported or leaned toward Kennedy.

Harris performs best among the same demographic groups as Biden. But this coalition of voters is now much more likely to say they strongly support her: In July, 43% of Biden's supporters characterized their support as strong - today, 62% of Harris' do.

Too much uncertain on domestic policy and major events in both of Biden's wars that could upset the apple cart ... drastically.

Was America ready to elect a black person for president in 2008? Yes they were.

Society and democracy in the U.S. has taken a hit in the aftermath ... racism, misogyny, white supremacy and xenophobia has surged in the last 16 years. The mountain to climb for Kamala Harris will be much tougher ... flip of a coin or 50/50 at best.

Bill Clinton was the first black president before Mitch O'bama.

Mitch O'bama famously obviated any response to demands by descendants of US slaves for reparations. Then, Genocide Joe officiated the first Juneteenth bank holiday.

Now, comes Kamala?!, first black Indian Tamil female vice-president "accession" to leadership of the free world, to extinguish any remaining black American claims to "equity".

What polling shows about Americans' views of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. | AP News |

About as many people had a favorable as unfavorable view of Kennedy, according to a July AP-NORC poll  that was conducted before Biden dropped out of the presidential race last month. That marks a decline from February, when more had a positive than negative view of Kennedy, and about 3 in 10 did not have an opinion.

Republicans were significantly more likely than Democrats and independents to have a favorable view of Kennedy. And those with a positive impression of Kennedy were more likely to also have a favorable view of Trump (52%) than Harris (37%).

Kennedy also struggled to endear himself to political independents. Although he is running as an independent presidential candidate, polling shows about 4 in 10 independents did not know enough to form an opinion. Those who did were divided equally between favorable and unfavorable opinions.

The base of support

Kennedy's appeal largely rested on being an alternative to the match-up many Americans dreaded when Biden was facing Trump in a rematch of the 2020 election won by Biden. A Pew Research Center poll from July found that about half of voters who were supporting Kennedy said the main reason they backed him was because he was neither Biden nor Trump, compared with about 3 in 10 who listed Kennedy's characteristics or policies.

Harris' move to the top of the Democratic ticket may have further harmed Kennedy's prospects. An August Pew poll suggested that Harris has gained support at Kennedy's expense. She appears to have received the support of some women and non-white voters who previously were considering Kennedy.

Looking forward to interviews and a "new look": what a hoot! while GOP lathers one "attack line" on political rivals that predictably arouses the antipathy of the most ignorant, litigious nation on planet. It's not misogyny, and it's no racist "slur" with which masses of "gumbo" Americanos identify, but LEFTY SOCIALIST COMMUNIST Kamala?! is trash talk so diabolic it just flip undecided likely voters!

I pay attention to opposition theater, not DNC brand management massaging "unfavorable" Biden-Harris public opinion with essence of joyful warrior, because there's one threat on which US Americans actually agree—a level play field for capitalist exploitation.

I hope to do an update post about once every two weeks, which leaves enough time for any new trends to emerge. Unless, of course, there is some major event which threatens to transform the campaign. The next and perhaps only other Presipential debate is scheduled for Sept. 10th. There is also a vice presidential debate scheduled for Oct.1st.

Barring an October Surprise, or a major snafu by either side, there are no other major events to disrupt current trends. To date it has mainly been a case of Trump's vote holding steady at about 43.5% and Harris increasing Biden's bedrock 40% of the vote by about 7% - mostly at the expense of Robert Kennedy Jnr. - plus some previously undecided or independent voters.

There is some speculation about Kennedy withdrawing and endorsing Trump by the end of this week. The Trump campaign has been conducting negotiations with him with the offer of some prominent post in their administration. The rest of the Kennedy family is firmly in the Democratic camp and would be appalled by such a move and it is by no means clear a large majority of his voters would necessarily follow any withdrawal and endorsement by him. One survey shows 32% of his voters would otherwise back Harris, 18% Trump, and the rest voting for another independent candidate instead.

A Kennedy withdrawal and endorsement could however, greatly help either campaign in battleground states where the Kennedy vote is greater than the current gap between the two candidates. These include Arizona where he has 5.3% of the projected vote, Florida (4.1%), Georgia (3%), Michigan (4.7%), Nevada (5%), North Carolina (3.7%), Pennsylvania (4.1%), and Wisconsin (4.1%).

However, on balance, I don't think his withdrawal/endorsement would greatly help or hinder either main party candidate. He seems more the petulant act of an aging self-entitled man who feels the world (and Democrats) never gave him the respect a son of RFK was entitled to expect. His maverick supporters are likely to scatter their votes all over the political spectrum.

Respected polls showed Trump actually winning the [Hispanic or] Latino vote—a dramatic departure from his roughly 30-point loss in 2020. @3:52: What we need to do to extend the Child Tax Credit, help young families be abel to take care of the children in their most formative years. What we need to do to bring down the cost of housing, my proposal includes what would be a tax credit of twenty-five thousand dollars for first-time home buyers so they can just have enough to put a down payment on a home which is part of the American dream and their aspiration[s], but do it in a way that allows them to actually get on a path to achieving that goal and that dream.

This dude understands (@ 12:05) that an uninterrupted positive slope, "change over time" or "rise over run", describes an increase, no matter its size > 0, in the quantity measured.

(I won't comment on the rest of the rant, but I will say this: US inflation rate was not "nine percent", when Genocide Joe "came into office". The US inflation rate a/o 1 Feb 2021 was 2.18%)

This dude understands (@ 7:14) that the first perquisite of tax credit benefit is reporting taxable income ≥ tax credit amount to state comptrollers and the IRS.

(I won't comment on the rest of the rant, but I will say this: A tax credit is not practicable, given the most recent ACS estimated $74,755 median HH income. This tax payer $25K min expense, to be recouped at TYE in the form of foregone, equivalent personal tax, amounts to 33% median gross income, far greater than min effective tax rate for the brackets ≤ median. This tax benefit does not reduce to home prices or mortgage rates. It does nothing to enhance "middle-class" disposable income or savings. For example, standard deductions per "middle-class" HH per person increased handsomely across income tax brackets adjusted during Cheeto's regime, 2017 but have not been adjusted for real dollar depreciation during the Biden ERA. (Perhaps Harris-Walz proposed tax on unrealized capital gains could obviate fed tax for more under-performing "middle-class" HHs or "offset" forgone tax revenue and NDAA budget gains. idunno.) Moreover, W2 employees customarily abuse W2 withholding allowances by "estimating" future credits and deductions (such as mortgage interest) in order to maximize wage or salary pay, ie. current disposable income including savings. Ideally, at TYE this "estimating" does not adversely affect the payer's AGI tax obligation, ie. increase tax owed or eliminate anticipated refund. On the other hand, given fluid opportunity economy conditions, Harris meant to propose refundable tax credits FTW of everyday items and mortgagee rebates)

This could be a big deal in November. Here's what's driving Hispanic voters to the right | Miami Herald - 13 March 2024 |

With just months to go before the November elections, Republicans are bullish about Donald Trump's prospects of further expanding his support among Hispanic voters in Miami-Dade County and Florida, building on a trend that over the last decade has pushed the state to the right.

In interviews with more than a dozen political consultants, party officials and experts, Republicans and even some Democrats described a broad realignment in Hispanic voters' political leanings -- one that goes beyond conservative-leaning Cuban Americans and largely favors the GOP and Trump.

The rightward shift could have wide-ranging repercussions this fall, when Floridians will vote for president and U.S. Senate, and Miami-Dade voters will cast ballots in races for sheriff and elections supervisor, among other contests. Were Hispanic voters to more widely embrace Republicans, it would likely take the Sunshine State out of play for Democrats entirely and possibly usher in a new era of conservative leadership in Miami-Dade.

"As far as Florida is concerned, it seems to us that there has been a political realignment, and that there is a realignment towards the Republican Party with Latinos," said Eduardo Gamarra, the co-director of Florida International University's Latino Public Opinion Forum.

[...]

In South Florida, Republicans have launched clinics to help immigrants study for their naturalization tests. They have also used foreign policy as a tool of campaigning, speaking up against leaders in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela that many Latinos who move to Florida blame for worsening conditions in their homelands.

Campaigning for re-election in 2020, former Vice President Mike Pence rolled out the Latinos for Trump initiative in Miami to mobilize Hispanic voters. Trump also launched Evangelicals for Trump at El Rey Jesus megachurch, which has a majority-Hispanic congregation, and headed to Little Havana to announce a reversal of Obama-era Cuba policies.

Can Kamala Harris win over disenchanted Latino voters? | The Guardian - 15 Aug 2024 |

Most southern California Chicanos reflect their state's liberal tendencies and have little in common ideologically with the majority of Miami's right-leaning Cuban Americans. Phoenix-based pollster Mike Noble notes that Latino voters whose roots go back to Colombia, Venezuela and other South American countries have been gravitating towards the Republican party over the past four years.

Latinos are not yet digging deep into their pockets to support Harris. Two Zoom fundraising calls with Black women and men held on consecutive nights right after Biden bowed out brought in a total of $2.8m. Similar Zoom calls with Latinas and Latinos for Kamala on 24 and 31 July, respectively, posted a combined net haul of $188,000.

Axios Latino has been tracking US Latinos' views of Harris in conjunction with Noticias Telemundo and the Ipsos market research and public opinion firm since the first year of the Biden administration. By the end of 2021, Axios Latino found that 48% of Latinos had a favorable opinion of Harris - but that figure had slumped to 39% by last March. A different survey of Latinos in 10 states found that sentiment persisted in Arizona and Nevada even days after Biden's fateful debate performance in late June.

I am offering what I describe as an opportunity economy and the best economis in our country, if not the world, have reviewed our relative plans for the future of America. What Goldman Sachs has said is that Donald Trump's plan would make the economy worse. Mine would strengthen the economy. What the Wharton School has said is, Donald Trump's lan would actually explode the deficit. Sixteen Nobel laureates have his economic plan as something that would increase inflation, and by the middle of next year would invite a recession. You just have to look at where we are and where we stand on the issues, and I'd invite you to know that Donald Trump actually has no plan for you because he is more interested in defending himself than hs is in looking out for you.
ChatGPT | Goldman Sachs CEO says report that Harris is better for economy was blown out of proportion, 13 Sep
Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon called out the Democratic presidential nominee for a claim she made during Tuesday's showdown in which she touted the investment bank's analysis of her plan -- saying the Vice President blew the report out of proportion.

Solomon pointed put that the report "came from an independent analyst" and that Harris left out key details—including that the difference on the economy between the rival plans was "about two-tenths of 1%."

"I think this blew up into something that's bigger than what it was intended to be," Solomon told CNBC on Wednesday [11 Sep].

"I am offering what I describe as an opportunity economy, and the best economists in our country, if not the world, have reviewed our relative plans for the future of America," she said during the debate [10 Sep]. "What Goldman Sachs has said is that Donald Trump's plan would make the economy worse, mine would strengthen the economy.

HARRIS: Well, let's be clear that the Trump administration resulted in a trade deficict, one of the highest we've ever seen in the history of America. [... @17:44] What Donald Trump did was thank—Let's talk about this with COVID—was he actually thanked President Xi for what he did during COVID. Look at his tweet. Became A Conservative Over Night

Policy U-turn but my values unchanged ... she is magic.

Unfortunately Kamala peaked too early and she risks the ride going south from here ... head to head fist fight with Donald to change her fortune for winning the presidency. Not forward looking, forgetting the crucial electorate of youth, independents and first time voters. Mainly on the defensive ... her big surge was the old man retiring ... now she's all naked, taking the bashing.

From your CNN link ...

"I think the most important and most significant aspect of my policy perspective and decisions is my values have not changed," she said.

"You mentioned the Green New Deal. I have always believed - and I have worked on it - that the climate crisis is real, that it is an urgent matter to which we should apply metrics that include holding ourselves to deadlines around time."

Her campaign later said Harris does not continue to support the Green New Deal, a wide-ranging proposal to address climate change first introduced in 2019.

During a September 2019 climate crisis town hall hosted by CNN, Harris was asked if she would commit to implementing a federal ban on fracking on her first day in office.

"There's no question I'm in favor of banning fracking, and starting with what we can do on Day 1 around public federal lands," Harris said at the time.

By the time she had become Biden's running mate, she had moved away from that stance and even cast the tie breaking vote to expand fracking leases, as she noted to Bash.

[...]

Harris also did not expose any daylight between herself and Biden on the Middle East when asked directly if she would be doing anything differently, including limiting arm sales to Israel.

"We have to get a deal done. This war must end, and we must get a deal that is about getting the hostages out," she said.

Then, I learned yer MLB boy poll-of-polls statistician Nate Silver desperately needs help validating his post-2016 uhh calculations. He's a slow learner.

I detect innerboob controversy: Was the interview broadcast at 9 PM Eastern Time (ET) live or recorded? Somehow reactionaries operating in the most ignorant, litigious "social media" channels suspect not only that CNN cut the interview from 41 min. to 18 min [?!], they are offended by CNN's "LIVE" label affixed to the 9 PM broadcast frame. I've no idea who started the 41 min. rumored run time. DK;DC. Once again, I correctly anticipated intelligence on the home front.

Obviously, CNN recorded the interview for evening ("primetime") broadcast. No need to plumb nefarious reasoning for a decision to "meet them where they are". In any event, CNN accommodation ultimately did not flatter the travelers. This is the salient conclusion to the whole escapade.

I suppose, being vexed as I am by MSFT w32tm this week, I can't but help to polish one detail: eurotrib "EST" time stamp on my comment (above) links to CNN's promotional article.

Where I sit in Bal'more and in Savannah, GA, the time zone is Eastern + 1 hr Daylight Saving Time (EDT), or UTC -4. The most ignorant, litigious nation on planet "falls back" to Eastern Standard Time (EST, or UTC -5) 3 Nov.

The correct time should have been 10:04 PM-4 hr—6:04 PM EDT (18:04). This correction signifies only when I logged the article at eurotrib and confirms that CNN must have recorded video clips even earlier.

Isn't artificial intelligence grand!

Kamala Harris's much-hyped, first big interview was ... radically normal | The Guardian |

Perhaps most important was the personality test. The old saw in presidential campaigns was: which candidate would you rather have a beer with? Harris and Walz came over as the couple you'd be fine sharing cake and coffee with at your kids' birthday party. The same cannot be said of the former president and his running mate, JD Vance.

Democrats' bet is that Americans crave such relatability after a decade of Trump's malignant narcissism and Joe Biden's struggles with old age. The current president turned every interview into a nerve-wracking high-wire act. Harris was a fresh-faced model of steadiness by comparison.

[...]

Harris was then asked about her policy reversals on fracking and the Green New Deal. She avoided a gaffe but gave an answer that bordered on a wonky word salad: "I have always believed - and I have worked on it - that the climate crisis is real, that it is an urgent matter to which we should apply metrics that include holding ourselves to deadlines around time."

The Defense, 21 June 2012

President Obama is citing executive privilege, arguing that the documents are covered < wipes tears > under "presidential communications privilege," which is intended to ensure that presidents can conduct a full and robust decision-making process without fear of internal deliberations being exposed. As it's been used in the past, it can be applied even to communications in which the president himself was not personally involved. Holder wrote in a letter to Obama this week (pdf) that releasing the documents "would inhibit candor of such executive branch deliberations in the future and significantly impair the executive branch's ability to respond independently and effectively to congressional oversight." Holder added that the requests relate in part to ongoing criminal investigations and prosecutions, and so releasing the documents could compromise those efforts.
