According to the United Nations children's agency UNICEF, the war has had a "devastating impact" on children's mental health and well-being, with an "estimated 1.5 million (Ukrainian) children at risk of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other mental health issues, with potential long-term effects and implications."

Losing parents is among the worst outcomes of the war for children.
The grief can cause a child to lose interest in society and stop sharing their feelings with others. In some cases, the "intense sorrow" may cause "depressive symptoms, complete apathy, and a loss of interest and ability to learn," says Bilyk.

"Some children say, 'I want to be
where dad is. I want to go after dad.'
In acute cases, they may even have
certain suicidal thoughts," she says.

VDL's 2nd Term War Cabinet

Meet the new European Commissioner hopefuls

Having made it through the final hurdles of horse-trading with capitals around the European Union, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled on Tuesday from Strasbourg the lineup of College of Commissioners for her second mandate. Her centre-right European People's Party (EPP) got the lion's share -- 15 out of 27, including herself.

The Commissioners-designate are nominated by each EU members state. Von der Leyen assigns them their roles in her cabinet. Despite her efforts to reach gender parity, the current balance is 60-40 in favour of men. It would have been even more male dominant if not for Von der Leyen's offer to some capitals of a heftier portfolio in exchange for a female candidate.

The Baltics are in the driver's seat on all foreign and defence-related aspects - a clear message to the Kremlin. Her native Germany aside, Von der Leyen has brought representatives of the EU's three major countries -- France, Italy and Spain -- into her inner circle. Each is slated to get an executive vice-presidency, in addition to Finland, Romania and Estonia. With deputy roles scrapped, the executive vice presidents will coordinate the portfolios of fellow commissioners.

SAMPLING SOME POSTS

Kaja Kallas (Estonia, Renew Europe), High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy [EEAS]: The former Prime Minister of Estonia is almost surely the EU's next top diplomat. She would be taking over in an era of "geostrategic rivalries," confronting war, increased global tensions, a new arms race, and transatlantic uncertainty as the presidential election looms in the US.

Commissioners

Andrius Kubilius (Lithuania, EPP) Defence and Space [DG DEFIS]: A two-time prime minister, Kubilius consolidated his reputation as a Russian hawk in the European Parliament. As the first-ever EU Defence and Space Commissioner, he would be charged with stepping up production capacity of the bloc's military-industrial complex and securing more joint procurement of military equipment. He would also have to take on major common projects such as the planned European Sky Shield, which would function like Israel's Iron Dome.

Marta Kos (Slovenia, Renew Europe, but still not officially nominated by her country), Enlargement [DG NEAR]: A former diplomat, Kos would take the reins of accession negotiations at a time when the EU has renewed its push for enlargement. Many of the EU candidate countries hail from her Balkan region. She would also be responsible for the reconstruction of Ukraine and relations with the South Caucasus and Turkey.

The epochal failure of neo-globalism of the European government elected by nobody: the EU Commission

... and THE ANGLO-AMERICAN EMPIRE: "UNLEASH THE HOUNDS OF WAR!"

Europe's long evolutionary and progressive path towards democratic governments elected by the people, controllable and removable, from Magna Carta onwards - what is still cheerfully taught in schools and universities - has been radically reversed since the Maastricht Treaty of 1993.

The EU Commission project occupied by the US Dems, beyond declarations is based in facts - which are the only thing that matters - on the following strategic priorities ...

[...]

The EU's development project has totally FAILED, as evident by the loss of 30% of the EU's GDP, growth, wages and purchasing power compared to the US in just 20 years. But that is not enough, i.e. it is enough not to talk about it, despite all the economic and financial data being crystal clear.

Even Mario Draghi is calling for a reversal of course, i.e.  a programme of reforms and investments through the use of debt by both the EU and the member states, an opposite line to the one propagated by the Albrecht VDL [von der Leyen], which is based on the chronic conflict with Russia, on the green agenda and on the total control of the spending and investments of the Member States (the dictatorship of the Stability Pact, imposed in particular on countries with a debt to GDP ratio of over 60%, i.e. the Latin countries.

Car manufacturer Mercedes has lowered its earnings forecast for the current year. The reason: the poor economic environment, especially in China.

Ukraine: Scale of crisis | BBC News |

Research and statistics suggest that the share of Ukrainians who are experiencing mental health issues is huge, and it is growing.

According to the Ukrainian Health Ministry, the number of patients complaining of mental health problems this year has doubled since 2023, and market research data shows antidepressant sales have jumped by almost 50% since 2021.

A study published in the medical journal The Lancet suggests that 54% of Ukrainians (including refugees) have PTSD. Severe anxiety is prevalent among 21%, and high levels of stress among 18%.

Another study carried out in 2023 showed that 27% of Ukrainians felt depressed or very sad, up from 20% in 2021, the year before Russia's full-scale invasion negotiations failed and peace talks broke down.

Associations between mental health symptoms, trauma, quality of life and coping in adults living in Ukraine: A cross-sectional study a year after the 2022 Russian invasion

Prior to the 2022 invasion, Ukrainians were already living in the aftermath of Russia's 2014 invasion of eastern Ukraine, which resulted in over 13,000 deaths by 2019, including over 3000 civilian deaths, an estimated 1.4 million IDPs (Reuters, 2015; Sasse, 2020; World Bank Group, 2017), and a severe economic decline (Reuters, 2015). Moreover, pervasive attacks on civilian infrastructures have been reported since the early phase of the war (Haque et al., 2024, 2022), which may contribute to psychological harm for Ukrainians.

Some 13,000 people have been killed, a quarter of them civilians, and as many as 30,000 wounded in the war in eastern Ukraine since it broke out in April 2014, the United Nations says.

The estimated toll includes more than 3,300 civilian deaths, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said in a document dated February 25 and provided to RFE/RL the same day.

It comes as the simmering conflict between Russia-backed separatists and government forces approaches its sixth year, with little progress toward the implementation of a Western-brokered cease-fire and political-settlement deal known as the Minsk Accords.

Early studies of the mental health of Ukrainians following armed violence by Russia underscore the crucial need for continued monitoring of mental health during armed conflict. A high burden of mental health problems affected Ukrainians following Russia's 2014 occupation of Crimea, particularly in IDPs and in Ukrainians living in eastern Ukraine (World Bank Group, 2017). In the general Ukrainian population in 2015, the prevalence of depression was 6.3 %, anxiety was 3.2 % and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was 8 % (World Bank Group, 2017). In Ukrainian IDPs in 2016, the prevalence of depression was 22 %, anxiety was 17 %, and the prevalence of PTSD was 32 % (Roberts et al., 2019). Seventy-four percent of IDPs who needed mental health care did not receive any (Roberts et al., 2019). Mental health disorders became Ukraine's second leading cause of disability burden in terms of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in 2015 (World Bank Group, 2017).

The European countries that abstained from the resolution: Albania, Austria, Britain, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia.

Voted for the UNGA resolution: Andorra, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Norway, Portugal, Russia, San Marino, Slovenia, Spain.

Germany defends sitting out vote on UN resolution for Israel to end occupation of Palestinian territories within a year

The resolution does not sufficiently take into account Israel's right to self-defense as it does not mention its legitimate security interests, it added.

Germany doesn't sufficiently take into account 75 years of suffering of Palestinians on their homeland and the year long Gaza genocide. NEVER AGAIN ⁉️
