Geert Wilders failed in government, but the far right retains its grip on the Netherlands | The Guardian Opinion |
On Wednesday Dutch people go to the ballot box ... again! This will be the ninth election for the Tweede Kamer (second chamber), the Dutch parliament's legislative chamber, in this still young century. In some ways the Netherlands has become the Italy of the 21st century, plagued by political fragmentation, governmental instability, and radicalisation (accompanied, increasingly often, by violence).
This election is a direct result of this fragmentation and instability. The far-right Freedom Party (PVV) led by Geert Wilders dominated the last ruling coalition, but still pulled the plug in July, after less than a year. The various lessons that the Dutch media, political parties, and voters have drawn from this tumultuous experience should be relevant beyond the Netherlands, given that most European countries are struggling with a similar challenge: how to deal with the increasing electoral, ideological and political success of the far right.
Like everyone else, the Dutch media was taken by surprise that Wilders let "his government" fall and have tried to make sense of it. Compared to 2002, when an even more chaotic coalition fell after just 12 weeks, there is a lot less debate about whether the far right should have a role in Dutch politics - almost as if it has become impossible to imagine a Dutch future without it.
This is not surprising, as most Dutch media remain a (largely voluntary) hostage of the far right. The man himself barely graces the media with appearances or interviews, yet Wilders has been the most discussed politician on Dutch television.
Have not quite agreed with the argument of Cas Mudde ... the electorate on the far right has not expanded, but shifted between parties. Especially Rutte was a master to stay in power by binding the PVV voters of Geert Wilders to the VVD conservative party. Rutte gone, so were most PVV voters who all switched to Wilders in 2023 after Rutte dumped his Rutte IV coalition to proceed his career as NATO SG.
Blaise Pascal proved in the seventeenth century that the pressure exerted on a molecule of a liquid is transmitted in full and with the same intensity in all directions.

Being proud of the Netherlands is no longer allowed by those deranged left-wing self-haters. They're destroying the Netherlands with their false political correctness.
I love the Netherlands, our culture and history, and I'm incredibly proud of the #goldenage.
The Dutch Republic of Seven Provinces in the Golden Age was build om ... religious tolerance (except Catholics) and MIGRATION!!
In addition to the mass migration of Protestant natives from the southern Netherlands to the northern Netherlands, there were also influxes of non-native refugees who had previously fled from religious persecution, particularly Sephardi Jews from Portugal and Spain, and later Protestants from France. The Pilgrim Fathers also spent time there before their voyage to the New World.
After the Spanish Inquisition, Jews travelled with Prins Maurits to colonize and exploit the native population of Brazil ... later the Caribbean slave trade before moving to New Amsterdam and proceed to Antwerp and Amsterdam.

[Update-1]
Two PVV MPs anonymously attack Timmermans with fake images, GroenLinks-PvdA files a complaint | De Volkskrant |
All these people see an eclectic collection of AI images. Sometimes they're victory posters of Geert Wilders or young women announcing their intention to vote for the PVV (Party for Freedom). Often they're asylum seekers who are perceived as posing a threat to white Dutch people.
And then there's Frans Timmermans, who has attracted particular attention from PVV MPs, judging by the number of fabricated images dedicated to him.
June 29: An election poster of Timmermans in Obama style with the addition of "corrupt." 465 comments.

"I don't understand how he dares to show himself to the people, filthy, dirty, creepy, every breath you take is too much, even broken, you must (sic)."
"RIP (rest in peace, ed.) filthy, corrupt, crook, better today than tomorrow."
"I hope someone shoots him, that filthy good-for-nothing."
September 4: Cartoon of Timmermans stealing money from the pockets of
a white Dutch man, a house in the background. 288 comments.
"Why Pim Fortuyn and not him?"
"Dog, crook, liar, Timmermans must go. It doesn't matter how, as long as he's gone."
"Throw that bag in front of a train, you cunt."
September 17: Cartoon of Timmermans stealing money from a white man and giving it to two Syrians. 242 comments.
"Pim Fortuyn would have died for less"
"There's only one way to stop this"
"That filthy, dirty con man belongs six foot deep"
A scandalous low point
Threats, incitement, and incitement to hatred: they are inextricably linked to social media. But the fact that two members of parliament distributed fake photos of a colleague, thereby provoking dozens of comments about his death, and then leaving them on the page, is, according to emeritus professor of constitutional law Paul Bovend'Eert, a "scandalous low point" in parliamentary democracy.
GreenLeft-PvdA (Labour) files death threats complaint Dutch Prosecution Service
Following inquiries from this newspaper, GreenLeft -PvdA announced they will file a complaint of defamation "against the administrators of this page," PVV Members of Parliament Maikel Boon and Patrick Crijns. "We are also reporting the threats written under the posts."
Frans Timmermans was recently called a "dirty cancer dog" at close range on a terrace in Amsterdam. "Politicians are increasingly being threatened, as we've seen during this campaign," GreenLeft -PvdA said in response. "This is a threat to democracy. Pages like this contribute to this. We urge others, including media outlets, to stop distributing these images and posts, as this rewards the creators." It is up to the police and the Public Prosecution Service to assess the reports.
The Threatened Politicians Team of the Public Prosecution Service in The Hague says it will investigate the Facebook page and the threats as soon as Timmermans' report is received. "Politicians must be able to do their work unhindered and without restraint," says a spokesperson. "That is the foundation for the proper functioning of our democracy."
