JD Vance stuns world with embrace of Germany's far-right party | MSNBC News - 17 Feb. 2025 |

Vice President JD Vance shocked leaders at the Munich Security Conference when he challenged Germany's decades-long approach to preventing political extremism and effectively boosted a far-right political party, sparking outrage. MSNBC's Paola Ramos breaks down the significance of Vance endorsing a extremist group on the international stage, and the broader emboldening of extremist movements in Europe by the likes of MAGA allies like Elon Musk.

This isn't a real ceasefire in Gaza - it's a holding pattern before war returns | The Guardian Opinion |

According to Israel, this round of violence resulted from Hamas fire against IDF forces in Rafah, an area still under Israeli control, resulting in the death of an IDF reservist. Hamas has denied involvement. Israel responded with additional strikes on Gaza City and Khan Younis. With each side interpreting violations to suit its own interests, the ceasefire's vague structure leaves a wide margin for miscalculation and opportunism.

Indeed, ending the war has been celebrated as an important step forward that has seen Israeli forces partially pull back, and hostages and prisoners exchanged. However, the main problem is that the plan remains largely undeveloped. It offers no clear timeline, verification process or credible means of enforcement.

Moreover, few details of the second phase of the ceasefire - which should include a complete Israeli withdrawal, the formation of a technocratic administration in Gaza and the deployment of an international stabilization mission - have yet been agreed. With no clear sequencing or third-party oversight, the plan risks entrenching instability rather than resolving it.

Beyond Gaza, violence continues to spread across the West Bank, where over the past few days clashes have intensified between Israeli forces and settlers, and Palestinians. This parallel escalation, enabled if not encouraged by Israel's rightwing government, draws further attention to the limited scope of the current ceasefire and shows just how easily the conflict could expand again.

Israel erects nearly 1,000 barriers in the occupied West Bank

In the last two years Israel has erected nearly 1,000 barriers in the occupied West Bank, restricting movement for Palestinians and severely hindering their lives, a local government body said.

Israel erects nearly 1,000 new barriers across West Bank, deepening Palestinian isolation | Arab News |

While Israel's military has long imposed movement and access constraints after capturing the West Bank in the 1967 Mideast war, the number of new barriers is unprecedented, residents say.

According to the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission, an official Palestinian governmental body, 916 gates, barriers and walls have been installed since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel.

Israeli military raids throughout the West Bank have also increased, with Palestinians killed or detained. Israel says it is trying to root out militancy.

Among the new barriers are metal gates stationed at many village and town entrances and between cities, blocking access in and out. Sometimes the Israeli military is stationed at them.

Palestinians say the gates have erratic opening hours, with some staying shut for days. Some people sleep at friends' or relatives' homes or go around the gates on foot.

During the first two weeks of September, the United Nations said it documented the installation of 18 gates in the West Bank. It said the gates and other obstacles, such as large earth mounds and concrete blocks, restrict Palestinians' freedom of movement and access to health care and education. The barriers are placed in the middle of roads, preventing cars from going around them.

The new gates, some of which block roads connecting the northern and southern West Bank, force the territory's 3 million Palestinians to take long detours, with a 20-minute journey now taking more than an hour.

Israel's military says the gates are not meant to restrict people but rather to "manage and monitor."
