"My favorite place in Gaza is the Great Omari Mosque. I like to pray and read the Quran there. The tall minaret is very unique"- Samira Elbaz, 9 years old

Gaza's Omari Grand Mosque: A combination of civilizations (Arab News)

Few outside of Gaza would consider its history much beyond the decades of Israeli occupation. But Gaza is a historical treasure house. Many of those treasures are now in Israeli museums, and those that remain are becoming difficult to preserve due to the Israeli siege.

Gaza, set along the historical silk road and on the bridge between Africa and Asia, was host to civilizations, including the Pharaohs, Canaanites, Philistines, Crusaders, Mamluks, Romans and many following. Alexander the Great invaded Gaza; Napoleon Bonaparte passed through.

"Throughout Gaza, you find pottery and carved columns and capitals, and the remnants of civilizations past, including artifacts from early human presence like the iron and bronze ages," says Asad Ashoor from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in Gaza.

"There are visible relics in Gaza," says Ashoor. These have survived civilizations and more recently, Israeli bombings.

In the Deir al-Balah region, the vast excavated remains of the Monastery of Saint Hilarion, the first church in Palestine, include surprisingly intact floor mosaics and structural pillars.

The Arab World Institute in Paris is putting Palestinian heritage on display in its new exhibit "Rescued Treasures from Gaza : 5000 Years of History".

Seattle Pro-Israel Stealth PACs Smear Local Candidates | Tikun Olam |

This is how the poison spreads.  School board races are generally non-partisan affairs, based on hyper-local educational issues.  But accepting such outside support, candidates are injecting extraneous partisan issues into elections.  This is Citizens United run amok.

Aipac: the “art” of the smear

It is a tactic Aipac and its affiliate PACs have used to defeat candidates in federal elections. When polled about their priorities, Americans ranked Israel 20th on their list. Only 9% of American Jews rank Israel among their two top priorities. The Israel Lobby, which probably has done its own polling on this issue, knows that attack ads intended to smear progressive Democratic primary candidates, will not resonate based on Israel.  So they identify weaknesses in these candidates wholly unrelated to Israel, and air ads which smear them with blaring, false claims intended to suppress turnout among their likely supporters.

It’s a nasty, underhanded strategy.  But in many cases it works. Aipac boasts of the “anti-Israel” or “anti-Semitic” candidates it’s defeated; while trumpeting the pro-Israel Congress it has created.  Success leads them to replicate the playbook over and over again.

As I wrote in my last post, the stealth strategy and the hundreds of millions pro-Israel donors dump on such campaigns poison the American electoral system.  Most of them are MAGA billionaires.

Thus, wealthy Republican oligarchs are meddling in internal Democratic processes in order to transform the Party into a bunch of pro-Israel automatons.

Latvia's planned withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention - a setback for the human rights of women and girls | ICJ |

Latvia's president sends law withdrawing from Istanbul Convention back to Saeima | EuroNews |

The Istanbul Convention is a treaty which aims to prevent and combat violence against women and has been signed by all the European Union's member states and several other nations outside the EU, like the United Kingdom and Norway.

The EU as a whole acceded to the Istanbul Convention in 2023, making it a legally binding agreement for the 27 member states in areas falling under the EU's competence.

Those include EU institutions and the public administration, judicial cooperation in fighting crime and asylum rights.

But Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Lithuania have not ratified the convention.

Istanbul Convention

Hiding behind a sofa: European hypocrisy | by Bernard |

In the wake of Sofagate, there has been also much tut-tutting over Turkey's announced withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, that very few people knew about before, let alone had bothered to read: yet another opportunity to point the finger at a bad Muslim. Of course, very few comments pointed out that many EU countries didn't sign that convention, in the name of family values and Christian values.

The question is not really whether the EU wants to be taken seriously or not: it should start with whether the EU member countries want to take the EU seriously; given the cacophony and contradictions over a lot of international policy issues - not only immigration, there is quite some work on the table.
