Russia also holds Crimea, Ukraine's southern peninsula, which it annexed in 2014. The seizure of Crimea triggered a wave of international sanctions and led to Russia's expulsion from the Group of Eight.

"The land that Russia currently occupies in Ukraine's south and east is rich in various natural resources," said David Salvo, the managing director of the Alliance for Securing Democracy at German Marshall Fund.

Ukraine started the day with, for once, the diplomatic wind in its sails. It had finally agreed a mineral deal "framework" with Washington. An agreement that would see the US invest in Ukraine's recovery, in return for a share of the country's future profits from its natural resources, energy infrastructure and its oil and gas.

There had also been a first round of peace talks between American, European and Ukrainian officials in Paris, which had been hailed as "positive". That was until both US President Donald Trump and his Secretary of State Marco Rubio threatened to pull out of brokering a ceasefire until progress appeared quickly.

Ukrainian troops are fighting to hold their ground in the battle for Pokrovsk -- a key city in the eastern Donetsk region under relentless assault. As Russia's offensive pushes deeper into the city, soldiers describe "close to critical" conditions amid nonstop fighting, drone attacks, and heavy bombardment.

Current reports from the front show Russian forces trying to sever supply routes while Kyiv scrambles to reinforce defenses. Despite overwhelming numbers, Ukrainian units continue to resist -- determined not to let Russia capture Pokrovsk entirely.

DIU Fighters on Black Hawk Managed to Force Open Land Corridor in Pokrovsk

Soldiers of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, supported by UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, conducted a successful operation in the city of Pokrovsk.
According to the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, a group of Special Forces managed to force open a land corridor after landing in the city's industrial zone.

The operation was conducted by the Tymur special forces unit, known for participating in complex combat missions at the front line. The DIU emphasized that the mission was successful.

"Ukraine is closer to NATO than ever before," Mark Rutte on visit to Kyiv

Speaking alongside Zelenskyy, Rutte said Ukraine's "fight for freedom" reflects NATO's core principles and values.

"Ukraine is closer to NATO than ever before and will continue on this path until you become a member of our alliance," Rutte told Zelenskyy.

"Ukraine gets stronger day by day, more interoperable with NATO and better prepared than ever to join our alliance," he said. "And this is basically building the bridge to NATO membership for Ukraine."

Rutte added that it was also important for NATO members to boost production to be able to provide weapons for Ukraine and restock the depleted arsenals of members.

The Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) is led by the UK and made up of mostly Nordic and Baltic states.

The 10-nation Joint Expeditionary Force or JEF, the Nordic and Baltic countries, plus the Netherlands and led by the UK, is a smaller, more agile grouping of some of the alliance's best militaries. Defense ministers met Wednesday in Bodø, Norway to plan further cooperation and exercises and to formally invite Ukraine as a partner.  NATO last month opened a new Combined Air Operations Center in Bodø to better coordinate the defense of the high north. 

Meanwhile, experts have warned that Ukrainians are at significant risk of power shortages this winter, which could affect everything from electricity to heating in the coming months. The risk comes as a result of Russia's ongoing bombing campaign, which has targeted power plants and gas infrastructure across the country. That's caused widespread power shortages and heightened fears of a difficult winter as temperatures begin to drop.
