'We're Not Spending Anymore': Trump Announces Major Policy Shift
President Vladimir Putin meeting for talks in the Kremlin
Russian President Vladimir Putin meets with US Presidential Envoy Witkoff in the Kremlin. The talks are taking place in a formal setting, and the first images have already been released.
"Glad to see you! Have you had a chance to stroll around?" "A very beautiful city!" "The Moscow authorities are rightfully proud of what they've done for the capital," Vladimir Putin remarked at the beginning of the meeting.
Representing Russia at the meeting are Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov and RDIF CEO Kirill Dmitriev. The American side is represented by Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump's son-in-law, entrepreneur, investor, and founder of Affinity Partners. The talks are taking place amid preparations for Putin's state visit to India, scheduled for December 4-5.
Zelensky said on Dec. 2 that if talks with the Russian side proceed smoothly, he could meet with the U.S. president soon, though "everything depends on today's discussions."
"They want to report to us immediately after their meeting. I think the next steps will depend on these signals," he said, adding that he is ready to meet with Trump.
Axios journalist Barak Ravid reported on Dec. 2 that after their Moscow trip, Kushner and Witkoff were expected to meet Zelensky in an unspecified European country. Ukraine's president traveled to France and Ireland earlier in the week.
After the talks concluded, Ushakov claimed that the two U.S. envoys "promised they wouldn't go to Kyiv, but they promised they'd return home" to Washington.
The White House has not responded to the Kyiv Independent's request for comment.

One could easily agree, as Halbe Zijlstra claimed, that Putin counts the Slavic countries of `Russia, Belarus and Ukraine' to be part of it but how valid is it to believe that they also included `the Baltic States' and that `Kazakhstan was nice to have'? Prime minister Mark Rutte, when initially defending his foreign minister, asserted that there was `no dispute about the content of the story'. But apparently there is some at least about Kazahkstan because the former CEO of Shell Jeroen van der Veer did `not recall' how he had mentioned the specific countries to Zijlstra but doubted whether `nice to have' was a term that himself would have would used.
