Jeffrey Sachs: Understanding the Ukraine conflict (minidoc)

Excellent presentation with not only arguments, but facts supported by historic evidence. Not a coup?

Always not sure in which role Robert Serry played in the coup d'état of February 2014, but the anti-Russia position of Dutch PM Rutte fits well in the total picture of his role on behalf of The Hague. Rutte was politically embarrassed after the one and only referendum voted down his proposal to invite the Ukraine into EU membership. The non-binding resolution was dropped in the paper-shredder.

Statement and Q&A at U.S. Embassy Kyiv, Ukraine

Remarks
William J. Burns
Deputy Secretary of State
U.S. Embassy Kyiv, Ukraine
February 26, 2014

DEPUTY SECRETARY BURNS: Good morning. I am delighted to be back in Kyiv at this historic moment. President Obama and Secretary Kerry asked me to convey a simple message--a message of deep admiration for the courage and determination of Ukrainians in the face of last week's tragic violence and a message of strong American support for a stable, democratic, inclusive, and prosperous Ukraine.

I was profoundly moved by my conversations last evening at St. Michael's Cathedral with the medics, religious leaders, civil society activists and protesters who demonstrated for the whole world such bravery and selflessness on the Maidan. Let je repeat my sincerest condolences to the family members and loved ones of all who were injured or lost their lives in pursuit of a more just and democratic Ukraine. Their sacrifices inspire us all [updated to 2025], and their selflessness should be a source of strength as Ukrainians seek to heal their society's wounds, renew their democracy, and revive their economy.

I have had extensive meetings over the past two days with a wide range of Ukrainian leaders, including Speaker Turchynov, Mr. Yatsenuk, Mr. Klychko, Mr. Tyahanybok, Mr. Poroshenko, Mr. Tihipko, and former Prime Minister Tymoshenko. I also met with Lady Ashton, the EU High Representative, and UN Special Envoy Robert Serry, with whom we share a strong interest in supporting Ukraine on its democratic path.

Top US diplomat apologises after embarrassing leaked Ukraine call | SBS AU - 7 Feb. 2014 |

Washington's new top diplomat for Europe, Victoria Nuland, has apologised after she was caught cursing about the European response to the crisis in Ukraine in a bugged phone call.

Nuland, who took over late last year as assistant secretary for European affairs, and Pyatt appear to discuss President Viktor Yanukovych's offer last month to make opposition leader Arseniy Yatsenyuk the new prime minister and Vitaly Klitschko, deputy prime minister. Both men turned the offer down.

Nuland, who in December went down to Independence Square in Kiev in a show of support for the demonstrators, adds she has also been told that the UN chief Ban Ki-moon is about to appoint a former Dutch ambassador to Kiev, Robert Serry, as his representative to Ukraine.

Ukraine: Extremists Reject EU Deal, Demand Violent Overthrow | 21 Feb. 2014 |

Opposition leaders speaking before a large crowd gathered on Independence Square, were wholly divided. Klitschko got a luke warm response. Agitators in the crowd tried to stir unrest by shouting their disapproval. A number of coffins were transported forward towards the speaker's stage with a demand to respect the dead. Orthodox priests led the mourning by prayers. This was repeated with more coffins and was used a a strong emotional demand not to accept any agreement with dictator Yanukovich who has blood on his hands.

The extremist leaders [re: Lvov district neo-Nazis] took the stage and in a fascist style rhetoric rejected this EU brokered deal.

Trump Abandons Ukraine, Europe | Tikun Olam - 12 Feb. 2025 |

Donald Trump smashed decades of US foreign policy today by abandoning not only Ukraine, but all of Europe.  He concocted a so-called "peace plan" with of his Russo-bro, Vladimir Putin.  Trump's errand-boy and Secretary of Capitulation, Pete Hegseth, offered the bad news:

He...warned that America will be pulling back from its commitments to European security, renouncing the historic role it has played since the end of World War II, and set out a stark vision in which European governments will bear primary responsibility for their own defense -- as well as for that of Ukraine.

Trump added insult to injury, announcomg that he and Putin were now taking control of the Ukraine issue and turning Zelensky into a Russian satrap ...

John Bolton anyone ⁉️

My response to RS @TikunOlam

I lived and grew up in my teen years in the States ... I chose for Europe due to fear and violence inside America ... ever since 9/11 I felt the fear mongering spreading across the European continent ... xenophobia and Islamophobia ... NATO got pulled into foreign campaigns and is set to defend the Taiwan Straits ... Russia is not a military threat to Europe ... the EU and Russia combined were an economic threat to "Wall Street" and the $$$ ... my fear is not Ukraine, but the Middle East and genocide of Palestinians.

The Hague was known as a City of Peace for over 100 years ... Carnegie and donation of the Peace Palace, seat of the ICJ, and nearby the ICC. The United Nations and international law have been undermined by the NWO of Washington DC. With Geert Wilders, the Dutch have gone rogue worse than Washington.

Hegseth by NATO meeting in Ramstein said the highest priority is securing its own borders. The gavel was handed to the UK defence minster as the US took a back seat. Rutte the "Trump whisperer" got hit by a sucker punch. Trump advised Kyiv to hold elections as Zelensky has run out of legitimacy as president of a democratic state. The cost of military aid must be repaid by "rare earth" and critical metals ... $500 bn. Real sovereignty ... Trump hates losers. Ukraine was Biden's war 2013-2025. The false war narrative was cut to zero .. see Jeffrey Sachs.

    Richard Silverstein says:
    [February 13, 2025 at 6:16 PM]

@Oui: "Russia not a military threat to Europe???" What are you smoking?? Putin is a threat to everyone & everywhere: the Baltic States, Ukraine, eastern Europe. I don't buy your left anti-imperialism.

No, I'm not dogmatic by your definition. I am a Social-Democrat with a philosophy the French Revolution Equality, Fraternity, Justice. I considered myself a globetrotter with free movement across national borders meeting other cultures. The original founding of the EEC by the Treaty of Rome in 1957, established an economic union based on FDR's Four Freedoms. By its definition, the EU should have been opposed to monopolies and unipolar imperialism as has developed post 1989.

Politically I'm a centrist, been all my life, in amazement seeing a vast movement passing me on the right in a narrative of enduring wars against "terror". 9/11 still kills every day as Germany has experienced in recent months. The narrative of Netanyahu has been boosted by hijacking GWB's war on terror post 9/11, equating Palestinians with Al Qaeda. Terror has increased exponentially ever since.

Biden's hypocrisy (and Europe's) to appease Gaza genocide and condemn Russia's occupation of Russian speaking Donbas has failed to be argued by International standard of war crimes. Trump in his simple mind ended the hypocrisy. Netanyahu and Putin are the same. Hegseth go fix it.

Wolfowitz and the U.S. Imperium

Paul Wolfowitz gave a May 6th interview with CNN Turk where he criticized Turkey for not joining the Bush administration’s campaign to topple Saddam Hussein‘s government.

America never did recover from eight years of Bush-Cheney tyranny, destroying the global order, United Nations and every convention on torture and war crimes. Europe slowly sank into the abyss of lawlessness starting with the UK and New Europe.

It's a miracle god ... in a single day warmonger Rutte was converted to peace by apostle Trump ... I have never caught Mark with the word "peace" ☮️ crossing his lips until today alongside Pete Hegseth @NATO.

Russia's Ground Combat Capabilities and Implications for U.S.-Russia Competition | RAND Corp - June 2019 |

Russia and the United States have countervailing interests in multiple areas. Since 2008 Russia's military forces have improved substantially, enabling Russia to pursue its interests much more aggressively, including intervening in Crimea, eastern Ukraine, and Syria.

Researchers analyze the factors that undergird Russian military power: societal, political, economic, and demographic. They then turn to specific ground combat capability areas, such as the maneuver ground forces, indirect fires, long-range strike, and C4ISR.

The researchers expect relative continuity in the development of Russia's military capabilities but recognize that change is possible were energy prices to increase or decrease or Russia's relations with the West or China shift. The key challenge for the U.S. military will be to develop capabilities that can enable the United States to compete with Russia and achieve U.S. interests across different regions and intensities of conflict without provoking escalation.

Statement Barack Obama: “Russia Is ’A Regional Power,' Not Top Geopolitical Foe”. | 25 March 2014 | President Barack Obama says that he still does not consider Russia to be the top geopolitical enemy of the United States.” You read it correctly … “geopolitical foe” … wording as is, not on any level of a military equivalent power.

U.S. vs. Russia: What a war would look like between the world's most fearsome militaries | Military Times - Oct 2015 |

Russia remains weak, according to many traditional criteria. But it is now developing some key technologies, new fighting tactics and a brazen geopolitical strategy that is aggressively undermining America's 25-year claim to being the only truly global superpower. The result: Russia is unexpectedly re-emerging as America's chief military rival.

Russia has preserved, even modernized, its own "triad" with nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles, a large fleet of long-range strike aircraft and increasingly sophisticated nuclear-armed submarines.

Global Maritime Power? Russia's Navy faces an uncertain future | June 2022 |

With only one—and unreliable—carrier and already considerable budgetary problems to build more, Moscow will cope with increased NATO's presence in the Baltic and the Arctic

With the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO, the Russian Navy will face challenges it had never faced in a long time. The status of its aircraft carrier and the negative outlook for the development of more will significantly hamper the attainment of Russian ambitions as depicted in its new naval doctrine.

To make matters worse, Moscow is now unable to use the Baltic like it used to, not without running a high risk of attack coming over their ships. But more importantly, with Finland and Sweden officially in, the Alliance will be closer than ever to Russia´s Arctic military bases—thus, to its Northern Fleet. And this Russia doesn´t like.

The United States abandoned key treaties to limit risk of nuclear confrontation.

A dumb analysis of the Hoover Institution, VDL's Alma Mater

Democratic Imperialism: A Blueprint | Hoover Institution - April 2003 |

Only recently, we were accused of "abandoning" Afghanistan in the wake of the Soviet departure from that country. Today, Afghanistan may be the germ of a new American imperium.

Iraq forces the imperial question. In the aftermath of an Iraqi war, it may suffice to install a friendly autocracy, withdraw the bulk of our forces, and exert our influence from afar. Yet some have called for more. From voices within the administration like Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz, to policy intellectuals like Richard Perle, to esteemed scholars like Bernard Lewis many have argued that only a democratic transformation of Iraq, and eventually of the larger Arab world, can provide long-term security against terrorism and nuclear attack.

In an important address in February, George W. Bush lent his voice to this chorus. In no uncertain terms, the president affirmed that ...

"the world has a clear interest in the spread
of democratic values," not least because "free
nations do not breed the ideologies of murder."

The president invoked the examples of American-led democratization in post-World War II Germany and Japan, and he pointedly rejected the claim that Arab nations are incapable of sustaining democracy. What the president did not say, yet gently and ambiguously implied, was that so deep a cultural change would require America to occupy Iraq in force and manage its affairs for years to come.
