EU Commissioner VDL In Full Panic Mode

by Oui Tue Mar 11th, 2025 at 06:43:36 PM EST

For some weeks there are no coherent statements and strategy to overcome at least one or two of the multitude on her plate ... years of neglect refusing to get her hands dirty or be confronted by criticism. Today there is no place to hide at the start of her second term ... an appointment that never should have happened in a democracy ... the Holy Roman Empire capitulating ... again. Where is the money bag so I can catch some sleep at night. ☹

EU Commission chief calls for defence 'surge' in address to EU parliament

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has urged the European parliament to ramp up defence spending, as leaders mobilise to find common ground on the military future of the continent.

Tuesday's remarks at the European parliament in Strasbourg coincide with French President Emmanuel Macron's gathering of military chiefs from 30 European and NATO countries in Paris to discuss Ukraine and wider security challenges.

"Europe's security order is being shaken," von der Leyen warned, stressing that the continent can no longer assume "America's full protection".

"The time of illusions is now over. Europe must step up and take charge of its own defence," she declared. "We need a surge in European defence. And we need it now".

Strengthening deterrence

Von der Leyen's call comes as US President Donald Trump's commitment to Ukraine and NATO has faltered, raising fears that Washington may scale back its security role.

Meanwhile, his openness to negotiating with Russia over Ukraine has sparked concerns that Kyiv could be pressured into an unfavourable deal.

"Putin cannot be trusted - he can only be deterred," von der Leyen asserted, noting that Russia is outspending all of Europe combined on defence.

Macron hosts military chiefs from 30 countries to discuss Ukraine | Le monde |

The French president on Tuesday welcomed military leaders from EU and NATO countries, including Britain and Turkey, to investigate security guarantees for Ukraine as negotiations with US officials began in Saudi Arabia.

French President Emmanuel Macron was on Tuesday, March 11, to address a meeting of military chiefs from 30 European and NATO countries willing to contribute to security guarantees for Ukraine after any negotiated truce with Russia. Macron, who has sought to rally a European response to Washington's shock policy shift [from war to peace - 😊] in US-Russia relations, has said the meeting will be held in coordination with NATO military command.

The get-together of military chiefs of staff from 30 European and NATO nations - including Britain and Turkey - is "important," said Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu, adding that it would aim to lay the foundation for any possible security guarantees for Ukraine. "It is simply a question of looking ahead and thinking about what the Ukrainian army should be in the future," Lecornu said ahead of the talks. "We will reject any form of demilitarisation of Ukraine," he added.

With more than 800,000 troops, Ukraine's army is the largest in Europe, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. More than three years since Russia invaded its neighbour, Europe is scrambling to boost its defenses and break free from dependence on the United States.

With NATO surge in expansion towards the Russian frontier from the Arctic circle to the Black Sea, Putin asks what should we do about the missile launch pad build in the Ukraine on Moscow's doorstep. A repeat of so often aggression by one of the Western states over last 200 years.

John Mearsheimer: "China ascends! Trump's European Withdrawal Leaves Russia Unchecked"

Delve into the shifting dynamics of global power. China's rapid ascent continues under President Xi Jinping, with initiatives like the Belt and Road shaping international relations. Meanwhile, Trump's foreign policy has led to a perceived abandonment of Europe, prompting discussions about NATO's future and Europe's need for self-reliance. Concurrently, Russia's assertive actions have positioned it as a formidable force on the world stage.

Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi Meets the Press | 7 March 2025 |

Wang Yi: Friends from the media, good morning. I'm very pleased to meet you again. Thank you for your continued interest in and support of China's diplomacy. The year 2024 saw profound changes in the international landscape as well as remarkable progress in China's reform and development. Under the stewardship of General Secretary Xi Jinping, China made important progress in its diplomacy. We fostered a good external environment for China's high-quality development, brought much-needed stability to a changing and turbulent world, and made new and solid strides in building a community with a shared future for mankind. This year, the international situation is still full of challenges. But the mission of China's diplomacy remains unchanged. We will, along with other countries, continue to uphold what is right, steer the direction of our era, defend international fairness and justice, and safeguard world peace and stability. With that, I'm ready to take your questions.

Ukraine has said it will agree to US proposal for 30-day ceasefire | National News UAE |

To load the guns for resumption of the slaughter .. neither side can be trusted for the coming one hundred years.

Ukraine says it is ready to accept 30-day ceasefire, as US says 'ball now in Russia's court' | BBC News |

As Marco Rubio says, "the ball is now in Russia's court". This is a significant moment.

The joint statement contains several key lines, perhaps none more important than this: "The United States will communicate to Russia that Russian reciprocity is the key to achieving peace."

We've heard a lot, in recent weeks, about what Donald Trump expects from Ukraine and what sort of blunt instruments the White House is used to bend Kyiv to its will.

Now, it seems, it's time for Russia's intentions to be tested, in public.
Trump's dealings with Vladimir Putin have so far been shrouded in uncertainty, with no obvious sign of pressure to balance that being exerted on Volodymyr Zelensky.

Today's joint US-Ukrainian statement doesn't imply that Trump has suddenly changed his tune towards Zelensky. Theirs is a thorny relationship, born of many years of mutual mistrust.

But the ugly cloud of acrimony generated by that fractious Oval Office encounter 11 days ago may start to dissipate as the real business of peace-making gets under way.

With the immediate resumption of US intelligence sharing and security assistance to Ukraine, after a suspension that lasted mere days, it's Russia that may now be feeling the pressure.

US, Ukraine to set up negotiating teams for peace talks -- statement | TASS |

"The Ukrainian delegation reiterated that European partners shall be involved in the peace process," the statement reads

MOSCOW, March 11 - The US and Ukrainian delegations have agreed to form their negotiating teams and immediately begin talks on a lasting peace, as follows from their joint statement after talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

"Both delegations agreed to name their negotiating teams and immediately begin negotiations toward an enduring peace that provides for Ukraine's long-term security. The United States committed to discussing these specific proposals with representatives from Russia. The Ukrainian delegation reiterated that European partners shall be involved in the peace process," the statement reads.

Signing the critical minerals deal is paramount

Apart from that, the sides "agreed to conclude as soon as possible a comprehensive agreement for developing Ukraine's critical mineral resources to expand Ukraine's economy, offset the cost of American assistance, and guarantee Ukraine's long-term prosperity and security".

Zelenskyy Demands Russia Acknowledge Need for Peace Before Talks

Ukraine continues to pursue peace, but Volodymyr Zelenskyy stresses that only Russia's acknowledgment of the need to end the war can allow for a ceasefire and eventual negotiations. With continued EU and US support, Kyiv aims to secure lasting peace with robust security guarantees.

Strong backing from EU, willing NATO members and Trump

Ceasefire 'has never seemed closer,' Yermak writes but stresses need for security guarantees

An adviser to Zelenskiy appeared to accept the proposal, which included a probe into Ukrainian gas company Burisma.

Yermak nevertheless stressed that diplomacy alone will not bring about a ceasefire -- stronger political and financial pressure on Russia is essential to prevent a future resurgence of aggression.

"No one wants the current war to end more than our people -- but a peace must be found that is both just and sustainable," he added.

Andriy Yermak outlined key conditions necessary for a sustainable peace, including security guarantees for Ukraine, tougher European sanctions against Russia, and the seizure of Russian frozen assets to support Ukraine.

"Europe cannot allow a ceasefire that serves only to allow Russia to rearm, rebuild its forces, and come back for more Ukrainian lands and resources," he warned.

Despite Yermak's calls for U.S. involvement in security guarantees, President Donald Trump has refused to offer such assurances.

The Ukrainian delegation includes Yermak, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and Zelensky's Deputy Chief of Staff Pavlo Palisa.

Russian threats: "In a dangerous world, we must have the means to assert ourselves and not depend on anyone," says Dominique de Villepin.

"France had the foresight, decades ago, with General de Gaulle, to see things clearly. It knew, the France of General de Gaulle, that we could not count on anyone when the moment of truth came. And so we chose the path of independence, and we must support Europeans on this same path," he added. Dominique de Villepin asserted that "independence is not only on the military front, it is also in the domain of sovereignty." He called for "defending our idea of democracy" and "ensuring that we maintain this line of rigor and independence."
