"A Third World War is possible. We must urgently come to our senses.", stated Charles Michel, President of the European Council, on 26 September at the United Nations General Assembly.
In his speech, the head of the European Council defended peace, democracy and international humanitarian law. These are core values and priorities for the EU in a world where "we feel helpless as we watch three major conflicts mix into an explosive cocktail", he stressed.

Europe is in a "pre-war era" reminiscent of 1939 and nobody will feel safe if Ukraine is defeated by Russia, Donald Tusk has warned "For the first time since 1945, war in Europe is becoming `real' again," he said. Mr Tusk, a former president of the European Council and recently elected prime minister of Poland, said Vladimir Putin was escalating his war on Ukraine, attacking Kyiv with hypersonic missiles in daylight for the first time earlier this week.

An additional 82 residents were evacuated from the Velikonovosilkivska, Hrodivska, Pokrovska, Kostiantynivska, Selydivska, Bilozerska, and Oleksandrivska territorial communities of Donetsk region. The evacuees were transported by train to Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, and other cities, according to Ukrzaliznytsia.

The transfer of Crimea was framed as a goodwill gesture to mark the 300th anniversary of Ukraine's merger with tsarist Russia. The announcement of the merger in Pravda noted "the economic commonalities, territorial closeness, and communication and cultural links," though as Michigan State historian Lewis Siegelbaum notes, Crimea's cultural links had always been closer to Russia. At the time, there were about 268,000 Ukrainians and 858,000 ethnic Russians living in the area.
