Israel's War Causes a Bust-up @G7 Summit

by Oui Wed Jun 18th, 2025 at 01:44:24 PM EST

European defense and security for Ukraine was high on the agenda ... it was dwarfed by late addition the security of NATO ally, the genocidal State of Israel ...

See my diaries of the past few days.

Trump doesn't want Zelenskyy to be part of the NATO Summit 24-25 June in The Hague. Yet stubborn E-3 led by NATO head Mark Rutte forced though a visit to the sidelines of NATO. Such an arrogant trick is a signature provocation of Rutte, a former middle school history teacher.

The setting for a major conflict could be seen past weeks, dark clouds over the negotiations US-Russia and Ukraine-Russia in Istanbul. Each and every time Zelenskyy got a warm welcome from European partners led by E-3 UK-France-Germany. Zelenskyy was biding his time and refused to accept the present frontlines as a new boundary, willing to fight long term with NATO Europe division.

Ukraine’s leader was denied a meeting with his most powerful ally, after Donald Trump left the summit a day early

The Group of Seven summit in Canada has ended without leaders issuing a joint statement in support of Ukraine, as Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that “diplomacy is now in a state of crisis”

. The summit of major industrial democracies, which wrapped up in the Canadian Rocky Mountain resort of Kananaskis late on Tuesday, had been intended to showcase unity on major global issues.

But unlike in previous years, when the group had jointly denounced Russian “aggression” against Ukraine, this time it was unable to issue a statement in support of the embattled Western ally, in a sign of growing differences within the group amid escalating global crises. […]

But Emily Williams, a spokesperson for Canada’s prime minister, later retracted the briefing statement and said “no proposed statement regarding Ukraine was distributed to other leaders”, agencies reported.

A Canadian official said there had never been an attempt to issue a joint statement on Ukraine because of Trump’s wishes to continue negotiating with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the AFP news agency reported.

“It was clear that it would not have been feasible to find detailed language that all G7 partners could agree to in that context,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

Trump had underlined the differences in views towards Russia within the group on Monday, when he said it had been a mistake to expel Moscow from what was formerly the G8 in response to its invasion and annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea in 2014.

NATO Summit: Zelensky only invitation is at the dinner table of Dutch Royals at the Palace

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will not be allowed to attend official meetings at the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague. He will be welcome to attend the dinner at the palace to which the king has invited NATO leaders, according to the official program for the summit.

There has been a lot of talk about Zelensky's role in The Hague next week for weeks. The United States objected to an invitation for the Ukrainian president, who was a guest of honor at previous summits. But European allies insist that Zelensky come.

At the insistence of European countries, there will be an official meeting of NATO with Ukraine. But this time, the so-called NATO-Ukraine council will not include the leaders, as was the case last year in Washington, but the foreign ministers.

Their 'working dinner' will coincide with the royal dinner for the leaders. Earlier, NATO diplomats had suggested that Zelensky could address the foreign ministers as president.
Short edition

The summit will be much shorter than the editions of recent years. The dinner next Tuesday at Huis ten Bosch could be the first occasion where, for example, American president Donald Trump will appear, only to be able to leave again early Wednesday afternoon after one official meeting. Political reporter Roel Schreinemachers gives a glimpse behind the scenes below ...

An interview with [former British diplomat] Ian Proud changes the picture.

I had thought, as did most, that the Russians had given up on the West and were just stolidly ploughing on with their 2022 objectives. Proud asserts that this is not the case and that the Russians are genuinely interested in rapprochement with the United States.

Whether Trump himself can offer that is still perhaps an open question. He faces flat opposition from the Europeans, who still wish the war to continue. The head of the BND said recently that it would be in Europe's interest if the war lasted another five years and we see from the reactions of various European politicians that the only "peace settlement" they could support would be one that was not consistent with the Russian war aims. For some of them RF delenda est is the only end to this war that would leave them happy.

PUTIN PRESS BRIEFING

Re: Post by: JohnGilberts | Jun 19 2025 5:26 utc | 721

Here is the passage in question:

Press review: Washington mulls Iran strike as Russia and US plan 15 joint ventures by 2025

MOSCOW, June 19. TASS. Washington is weighing its role in the Israeli-Iranian conflict, international joint ventures are planned at SPIEF, and Zelensky falls short of securing the desired financial support at the G7 summit. These stories topped Thursday's headlines across Russia.

Media: Washington mulls whether it's worth attacking Iran

The US entering the Iran-Israel conflict risks the stand-off spilling over to other countries in the region, the expert community believes. The US is expected to decide on potential strikes on the Islamic republic in the next 24 hours. However, there is no consensus in US President Donald Trump's camp on the matter: many recall failures in Afghanistan, Libya and Iraq.

"The United States has deployed about 40 КС-135 and КС-46 aerial refueling tanker aircraft to Europe. This is a rather serious fleet, it is enhanced with fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets of the US Air Force and F/A-18 aircraft," Dmitry Kornev, editor of the Militaryrussia portal told Izvestia. "There are also two carrier-based groups in the Middle East. Some planes were redeployed to Saudi Arabia and some US bases in the Persian Gulf on June 17," he added.

The US Air Force's direct participation, delivering strikes on the Iranian military and energy facilities in the region alongside Israel's aviation, could expand the conflict outside its current geographic borders, analyst Tigran Meloyan from the HSE Mediterranean Studies Center told Izvestia. In his opinion, Syria, Iraq, Jordan and Persian Gulf monarchies may end up in the risk zone.

"US facilities in Iraq and Arabian monarchies are definitely threatened, for instance, Qatar's Al Udeid Air Base, one of the largest in the region. Even though the US facilities will become the main target, such a development will exacerbate Iran's relations with its neighbors," Eastern studies expert Leonid Tsukanov said in a conversation with Izvestia.

The Trump administration has not made a final decision on the Iranian-Israeli conflict, Associate Professor at the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at the Higher School of Economics Dmitry Novikov believes.

The expert stressed in a conversation with Vedomosti that the Trump administration's current strategy is based on psychological pressure, particularly effective given Iran's vulnerable position. The US leadership is facing a difficult choice between continuing the policy of threats or moving to direct combat, with the risks of further escalation remaining extremely high.

The US and Israel's goals in the Middle East significantly diverge, expert at the Valdai Discussion Club Andrey Kortunov told Vedomosti. According to him, Israel aims to change Iran's regime and is ready for further escalation, while the US is focusing on resolving the nuclear deal issue and is not interested in a military aggravation.
