Good morning.
I really want to welcome Pete Hegseth, here at NATO again. You were here in February. You were very clear about the agenda you and President Trump are driving. We heard the message.
Today will be an important meeting, because today we will agree on the capability targets we need going forward to keep 1 billion people safe in NATO territory. From this, we will decide at the NATO summit to the spending. And we already know we need to spend much, much more if we want to fulfill all these targets. And by the way, by doing that, we will also equalise in terms of spending between Canada and Europe and the United States.
There has been a total commitment by the US to NATO, but also this expectation that European and Canadian Allies will step up spending. And I'm pretty confident we will get there at the summit.
I also want to thank you and the President for what you are doing with Ukraine, driving the peace, engaging with President Putin and breaking the deadlock. 🤥 🤥 And I think that is extremely important. And also today we will discuss Ukraine.
So Pete, thank you for being here. Thank you for your leadership and thank you for being such a staunch ally.

Europe's plan to secure a post-war Ukraine has hit a critical roadblock as the U.S. refuses to provide aerial cover for the European-led "Coalition of the Willing", exposing deep cracks in Western unity.
With U.S. defense leadership pulling back and shifting focus toward Asia, Europe faces rising pressure to increase its own military spending and coordination. As coalition deployment stalls, the EU unlocks massive funds for defense, but uncertainty remains about who will lead the charge against Russian aggression -- a dilemma with high stakes for European security and global stability.

Europe has the money and the artillery shells, but key U.S. capabilities like operational intelligence and air defense would be difficult to replace.
European nations are increasingly optimistic that they can support Ukraine financially and militarily against Russia even if President Trump decides to wash his hands of the conflict, as he often threatens, and instead focuses on normalizing relations with Moscow.
But even with their best efforts, the Europeans cannot replace all of what the United States provides Ukraine — most important, real-time intelligence about Russian forces, incoming missiles and how and where to target the enemy. Ukraine’s ability to fight effectively relies largely on that American intelligence.
“The Ukrainians don’t want this to be cut off no matter what,” said Camille Grand, a former NATO assistant secretary general. American intelligence is so sophisticated that it tells the Ukrainian military where Russian brigade headquarters are, where to target missiles and where to aim air defenses against incoming missiles.
But the time between investment and product delivery worries the Ukrainians as the American pipeline begins to dry up.
What is hard to obtain are large numbers of air defense missiles, like the American Patriot. The Europeans have some Patriots, some of which they have already donated to Ukraine, mostly from German stocks, and European companies produce their own lesser versions, like the SAMP/T. But unlike the Patriot, it cannot shoot down fast-moving ballistic missiles.
