Lavrov Attacks Mark Rutte of Serious Funding Frauds to fund Zelensky's war | Times Now World |

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has criticized NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, accusing him of blocking a peaceful settlement in Ukraine while pressuring President Volodymyr Zelensky to maintain a hardline stance. Lavrov claimed Rutte acts as if he leads a global power, despite merely representing an alliance that lacks unanimous support for endless military aid to Kyiv. He also highlighted the disproportionate rise in global defense spending--estimated at $2.4 trillion annually--while billions in aid to Ukraine outstrip financial support for Africa and developing nations.

Mark Rutte, NATO's secretary general, said it was "not a difficult thing" to get members to agree to raise defence spending to 5% of GDP because of the rising threat from Russia - and stressed that Trump remained "absolutely" committed to supporting the alliance.

In an interview on the eve of the western alliance's summit, Rutte told the Guardian that all 32 members had agreed to increase defence spending because "there is so much at stake" after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

Under the planned agreement, NATO members would commit to raising defence spending to 3.5% of GDP, with an additional 1.5% allocated to broader security-related investments, including cyber-security and intelligence.

Rutte harshly criticizes Russia's Lavrov over NATO remarks | RBC Ukraine - 2 July 2025 |

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte sharply criticized Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov over his recent comments about the collapse of the Alliance, Rutte said in an interview with Fox News.

A few days ago, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was asked to respond to comments by his Polish counterpart, Radosław Sikorski, who predicted the collapse of the Putin regime as a result of the ongoing arms race. In response, Lavrov suggested that the significant increase in NATO member states' defense budgets could also lead to the collapse of the Alliance.

Commenting on Lavrov's statement, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised what he described as a major foreign policy achievement by US President Donald Trump and his administration in securing increased NATO defense spending. Rutte dismissed Lavrov's relevance, suggesting that the Russian minister had long ceased to offer any meaningful or constructive contributions, and said his remarks should not be given much attention.

European partners reportedly caught off guard as US halts arms shipments to Ukraine

The Trump administration's decision to halt deliveries of key military aid to Ukraine has caught European partners off guard and prompted urgent requests for clarification, Bloomberg reported on July 2, citing unnamed sources.

The pause affects the delivery of several weapons critical to Ukraine's defense, including Patriot air defense missiles, precision-guided artillery shells, Hellfire missiles, and munitions for F-16 fighter jets.

The White House confirmed the hold, describing it as part of a broader reassessment of U.S. military stockpiles. Since U.S. President Donald Trump took office in January, the U.S. has not approved any new military aid packages for Ukraine.
