Dutch Government In Shambles, Split Over Israel

by Oui Sat Aug 23rd, 2025 at 07:12:04 AM EST

BREAKING NEWS:

Earlier Wilders quit after fake criticism migrants policy calling for new elections. Dutch caretaker cabinet of PM Schoof split further today with a second party of FM Veldkamp (NSC) concerning policy vs Gaza genocide and Israel. Two hardliner parties liberal conservatives of Likud fan Dilan Yesilgöz (VVD) and the far-right one issue party of farmers, Caroline van der Plas (BBB), refused to follow other European nations in criticism of Israel. FM Veldkamp realized he could not make a realistic and credible policy towards the Middle East and resigned. All ministers and deputies of the NRC party agreed and also resigned from this incredulous caretaker cabinet. Never, ever was the political chaos complete in the Netherlands.

I'm glad there are still some politicians with courage in The Hague. The masses of pro-Palestine protest in recent months has made a difference.

Dutch Caretaker Cabinet Split Over Israel Policy

After the largest party PVV with Wilders already quit after criticism on foreign policy by FM Veldkamp while playing the migration card --again-- calling for new elections this Fall.

Now the rump cabinet of premier Schoof is led by the VVD of Yesilgöz (polls at 22 seats) and the one-issue farmers party of BBB left in recent polls at 3 seats. Both are far-right leaders following the line of Germany and EU Commission president Ursula Von der Leyen. The Christian Democrats were wiped out 2 years ago, climbing back to 23 seats.

Dutch Caretaker Cabinet Split Over Sanctions on Israel
for Gaza genocide and Ethnic Cleansing

Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp resigns over Israel sanctions (or lack of) policy far-right cabinet PM Schoof.

Caspar Veldkamp and other ministers step down after cabinet rejects sanctions against Israel, prompting broader political upheaval.

Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp has resigned after failing to secure cabinet support for additional sanctions against Israel over its military onslaught in Gaza.

Veldkamp, a member of the centre-right New Social Contract party [indeed not ’centrist’ 1 seat left in polls], said on Friday that he could not achieve agreement on “meaningful measures” and had repeatedly faced resistance from colleagues over sanctions already in place.

His efforts included imposing entry bans on far-right Israeli ministers, Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir, citing their role in inciting settler violence against Palestinians.

Veldkamp also revoked three export permits for navy ship components, warning of “deteriorating conditions” in Gaza and the “risk of undesirable end use”.

“I also see what is happening on the ground in Gaza, the attack on Gaza City, and what is happening in the West Bank, the building decision for the disputed settlement E1, and East Jerusalem,” Veldkamp told reporters.

His departure leaves the Netherlands without a foreign minister as the European Union navigates security guarantees for Ukraine and continues talks with the United States over tariffs.

Following his resignation, all New Social Contract ministers and state secretaries confirmed their support for Veldkamp and resigned from the caretaker government in solidarity.

Dutch leading politician Pieter Omzigt, founder of NSC, had to step down due to illness, leaving the new party with a void.

Omtzigt bows out, condemns ‘poisonous’ political climate | 13 May 2025 |

Politicians are failing to address the real problems facing the Netherlands, and the current political climate is “poisonous”, Pieter Omtzigt, founder of the NSC, said on Tuesday as he bowed out of politics after almost 22 years.

Omtzigt announced last month that he would step down, citing ongoing health issues and a desire to spend more time with his family. He has twice taken temporary leave from parliament due to a burnout.

Omtzigt, one of the key architects of the current right-wing government, told a press conference in The Hague that issues such as chaos at the social benefits agency UWV and the childcare benefit scandal are being ignored, while politicians focus on blowing minor issues out of proportion.

Yesilgöz spreads hate and lies in the footsteps of Geert Wilders and a majority of political parties in The Hague. The return of Dutch Colonialism with Luther, Calvin and Orthodox Protestantism. The right wing fascism breeds very well in this culture of divine intervention, white superiority and by definition racism and inequality.

Just unimaginable the fact that post World War II and the horrors of unfathomable suffering destruction and the Jewish Holocaust ... the Western World of Old Colonial Empires helped create the demon Israel as if we're not living in modern times post Enlightenment but in the hordes of Moguls, Persians and Barbarians.

Man arrested for threats to singer Douwe Bob; Said to lead far-right group in Amsterdam | NL Times – 2 July 2025 |

Douwe Bob felt that a previous agreement with the organizers of the football event to avoid “religious or political statements” had been violated. He then decided not to perform after all and left the venue. VVD leader Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius called it antisemitism on X, referencing World War II. The singer demanded an apology. Yeşilgöz-Zegerius repeatedly said that she would not offer one. According to the AD newspaper, the man responsible for the threats is Bob T., the leader of the Amsterdam Defence Force (ADF). The ADF is a conservative graffiti group with roots in the Ajax supporters scene.

The group claims to fight against what they feel is a new era of people coming into Amsterdam and taking away the city’s identity. They are also inherently anti-establishment with slogans like “fuck the police” and “Halsema Moet Opkankeren” a highly offensive term pushing for the city’s mayor, Femke Halsema, to leave.

The group has been a supporter of the Israeli bombings in Gaza. They are also known for being pro Zwarte Piet (Black Pete), which is the annual celebration of Sinterklaas in which people use blackface for the celebrations.

According to the AD, T. sent the singer a photo of the group’s location in Abcoude, in the area in which Douwe Bob and his family reside. “Half of fucking Amsterdam wants your head on a street tile,” the man said to the singer in a conversation obtained by the AD.

T. also commented on the “dead child” of Douwe Bob, referring to the singer’s prematurely born child. ADF’s original account had warned a day before the threats that they had obtained Douwe Bob’s living address.

The singer's group refused to respond to the news.

VVD leader Dilan Yesilgöz comes crawling back after six weeks !!

VVD party leader Dilan Yeşilgöz has formally apologized to Dutch singer Douwe Bob after accusing him of anti-Semitism on social media, a claim that led to a legal dispute, serious threats against the musician, and his temporary departure from the Netherlands with his family.

Yeşilgöz: “Anti-Semitism must not be trivialized or made socially acceptable” | CIDI Likud lobby in Amsterdam |

This is the first in a two-part series of interviews with members of parliament about their views on anti-Semitism and racism in the Netherlands.

Although the summer recess is still ongoing, Yeşilgöz has been in her office in the House of Representatives for quite some time. On the wall hangs an iconic photo of an elderly Armenian woman sitting on her bed, holding a machine gun, complete with a stern, piercing gaze. It aligns with a belief in the importance of vigilance, which also emerges throughout the rest of the conversation.

Iconic Image On Her Wall

A 106-year-old Armenian woman sits in front of her home guarding it with a rifle, in Degh village, near the city of Goris in southern Armenia. Armed conflicts took place in and around nearby Nagorno-Karabakh, a territory in Azerbaijan also claimed by Armenia. The Nagorno-Karabakh War displaced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes.

This is a tough elderly Armenian woman here. At around age 10 she likely lived through the Hamidian massacres of 1894-1896. Then, around age 30, her people went through the second round of Armenian massacres at the hands of the Ottoman government (1915-1923).

Dilan Yeşilgöz blames the Armenian massacre on the “Turks” … her ancestors were Turkish-Kurds and equally involved.

Dilan Yeşilgöz's apology to Douwe Bob comes too late, thinks political commentator Joost Vullings: 'Everyone knows: this is under legal pressure' | AVRO/TROS – 11 Aug. 2025 |

Vullings believes that Yeşilgöz's admission, after more than a month, that her tweet about Douwe Bob was wrong isn't very smart. From a political perspective, then: "If there's a lot of commotion, there are basically two things you can do as a politician: you apologize immediately, or you stand your ground and say you'll stick to your guns."

"She took a middle ground, and that wasn't very smart," says the political commentator. "There was this halfhearted 'I take it back, but then again, I don't,'" he reflects. Ultimately, she did apologize to the singer, but only after he threatened legal action. "Yes, then everyone knows: this is under pressure, and that already makes it less credible."

VVD Declines in Polls, Her Leadership Takes A Hit

Vullings points to the declining polls for the VVD. In the spring, the party was polling at around 30 seats, putting it in competition with the PVV and GroenLinks-PvdA for the largest party in the country. But in recent weeks, the liberals have been declining: in the latest seat poll by EenVandaag and Verian, the VVD was at 23 seats, equaling the size of the CDA, which has been on the rise for some time.

It is striking that confidence in the party leader among VVD voters has fallen sharply in the past month. At the end of last month, only half (50 percent) of voters who voted for the VVD in previous elections had confidence in Yeşilgöz. In mid-June, that number was at three-quarters (77 percent).

Chaos is unprecedented in history of The Netherlands ... a cabinet representing 32 seats in parliament ... policy must be agreed upon in 150 member parliament ... not a dysfunctional group of elites responsible for political chaos ... a sign of the times.

Fall of the Schoof I cabinet - caretaker status, controversial issues, and upcoming elections

In the early hours of Tuesday, 3 June 2025, PVV leader Geert Wilders announced via X (formerly Twitter) that his parliamentary group would be leaving the coalition with VVD, NSC, and BBB, after the other governing parties refused to adopt his ten-point plan for a strict asylum and migration policy. Shortly afterwards, PVV ministers announced they would be resigning.

Prime Minister Dick Schoof convened an emergency Council of Ministers meeting lasting nearly two hours and subsequently announced the fall of the government during a press conference. All PVV ministers are stepping down with immediate effect.

After the press conference, Prime Minister Schoof departed to formally offer the cabinet's resignation to King Willem-Alexander, thereby officially opening the path to new elections.

This marks an abrupt end to a coalition that had only been sworn in on 2 July 2024 and thus had been in office for less than a year. Coalition partners reacted with surprise and accused Wilders of "abandoning responsibility," while opposition leader Frans Timmermans immediately demanded new elections.

Wilders said his coalition partners were not willing to support his ideas on halting asylum migration.

"No signature under our asylum plans. The PVV leaves the coalition," Wilders said in a post on X.

Coalition expresses disbelief, anger

Wilders' coalition partners responded with disbelief and anger.

"This is making us look like a fool," the leader of the conservative VVD party, Dilan Yesilgoz, said. "There is a war on our continent. Instead of meeting the challenge, Wilders is showing he is not willing to take responsibility."

"This is incredible," the leader of the centrist NSC party, Nicolien van Vroonhoven, said. "It is irresponsible to take down the government at this point."

The resignation of Caspar Veldkamp and NSC was understandable, but the price is high | NRC Rotterdam Quality News |

A cabinet can fall twice. Society owes this insight to the outgoing Schoof cabinet. It happened in June, when the PVV left the cabinet, and it happened Friday evening, when NSC did the same. But that one fact is the only thing to be thankful for. The (once) four coalition parties have proven so incompetent that the Netherlands has become ungovernable. And the sad thing is that a new, fully-fledged cabinet is still a long way off: first, there are parliamentary elections on October 29th, after which a new formation process will begin. With a bit of bad luck, the Netherlands will be stuck with this cabinet for another year. A cabinet that now consists of only two parties, the VVD and BBB, has a mere 32 seats in Parliament, and only a small core of ministers remains.
