Leonid Slutsky, the head of the Russian State Duma’s International Affairs Committee, called for convening an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation around the joint Israeli and US attack on Iran.
"Without any doubt, the situation requires holding an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. The global community should prevent a scenario that could risk the outbreak of a third world war," the senior Russian legislator said.
He called the attack deliberate aggression and escalation fraught with extremely negative consequences for the broader region.
The theory about "pre-emptive strikes" or the objective "to defend the American people" in the wake of yesterday’s talks on the Iranian nuclear dossier in Geneva is a "smokescreen" for toppling the ruling regime in Tehran, Slutsky noted. According to him, Washington has pursued a consistent policy course here, including to undermine all processes toward reaching an agreement, starting from the JCPOA, he added.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has carried out a string of simultaneous and massive missile strikes against US military bases across West Asia in retaliation for airstrikes targeting several cities in Iran, including the capital Tehran.
Arabic-language media outlets reported that the Iranian missiles struck US military installations in Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
Local media reported that a series of the projectiles slammed into a base where US marines are based in Jafir region of Bahrain.
Bahraini authorities state that the service center of the Fifth Fleet of the US Navy has been hit as a result.
The Qatar-based Al Jazeera news network also reported that a number of loud explosions were heard in Kuwait City. Sirens warning of incoming missiles were triggered.

Most of the major actors in "W's" administration, excepting "W", date back at least to the Nixon Administration. Nixon got his start in the early '50s on the House Un-American Activities Committee, with its grotesquely self reflexive name! That noxious stew was brewed over the heat of the "Red Scare", led by McCarthy.
A key player in the "Red Scare" was J.Edgar Hoover, who got his start at the beginning of the "Red Scare", right after WW I and the Soviet Revolution. Conservatives used that meme effectively under successive Republican Administrations to undercut earlier gains made by the Progressives.
There has always been plenty to abhor in U.S. History. That is why it has been important to paint Heroic and Triumphalist Narratives for school children to study. These are still being supplemented by nostalgic fantasies about life in former times. Of course the current right wing characterizes anyone who brings up dark subjects from our past as "Hate America First" "liberals."
The good things about the USA have mostly been about the possibilities, of which the economic possibilities have mostly been what has been realized.
They still are, even in the current situation. However, the probabilities of the actualization of what we would think of as other, non-economic good possibilities seem to be diminishing. Being led in such times as these by one who apparently lacks the will and courage to confront the core problem we face--the fact that our government has, de facto, been captured by the financial elite and that this very financial elite seems bent on continuing in directions that will destroy the country and themselves.
