Fair play to Bill Gates’s ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, a woman who fronted up to appear on a podcast this week while so many of the men who feature in the latest Epstein files drop found that their diaries had them scheduled to stay hiding under their rocks. Melinda was asked about Jeffrey Epstein, obviously, and executed a very graceful drive-by. “Whatever questions remain there of what I don’t – can’t – even begin to know all of it, those questions are for those people, and for even my ex-husband. They need to answer to those things, not me. And I am so happy to be away from all the muck that was there.” Oof. Yet she also said, more generally: “I think we’re having a reckoning as a society, right?”

Cards on the table, I don’t think we’re having one at all. Look at the headlines, or what’s dominating all the news bulletins. We’re talking about anything but the things that most need to be reckoned with. In the UK, we’re talking round the clock about Peter Mandelson, the one guy in this we at least know wasn’t making sexually abusive use of Epstein’s trafficked women and girls. Even if he did offer Epstein image rehab advice, which, as discussed here in depth on Tuesday, was a foray into the moral abyss. (Again.) But the frenzied and remorseless focus on political fallout – and not the male-on-female debasement that is the entire heart of this story, and always has been – is weird, isn’t it? I had a mirthless laugh at the New Statesman’s cover this week, which characterised the Mandelson affair as “the scandal of the century”. Guys, it’s not even the biggest scandal of the scandal.

    Pastel drawings don’t typically go viral on the internet. But this month, thousands of Twitter users were mesmerized by a courtroom artist’s sketch of Ghislaine Maxwell – the alleged sex-trafficking accomplice of Jeffrey Epstein – staring at the artist and sketching back.

    Twitter users were disturbed. “I thought this was funny at first but it’s starting to haunt me,” one person wrote. Others commented on the picture’s bizarre, recursive quality – reminiscent of MC Escher’s drawing of hands drawing hands, and raising the possibility of some kind of infinite loop. Was Maxwell trolling us? Or sending the artist an ominous message?

While the latest release of Epstein files has touched off another round of controversy in the U.S., it has ignited a veritable firestorm in Europe, where the new tranche of emails, text messages, videos on photographs released by the Department of Justice has painted a far more comprehensive picture of the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's relationship with members of the global elite. And while a mention in the files does not immediately imply wrongdoing, last week's data dump has led to a chorus of high-profile figures explaining, and in many cases apologizing for, their connection to Epstein. Reputations have been tarnished, in some cases irrevocably.

The documents confirm what many have long assumed: elites live by their own special rules and codes of immunity

The millions of Jeffrey Epstein files dumped last Friday by the US Department of Justice will provide journalists, conspiracy theorists and interested members of the public with months of reading. And what they will read is enraging.

What makes these files so infuriating, however, is not just Epstein’s horrific predatory behavior, which is well-known, but the more mundane examples of elite conduct that the documents continue to expose. They vividly illustrate a world whose existence many everyday people, whether fevered with visions of the Illuminati or just jaundiced by banal anti-establishment cynicism, already suspected exists: an informal global club of powerful, ultra-rich people who all seemingly know each other, help one another out, and protect each other from the consequences of their depravity.

The new files will probably not provide satisfying answers to questions about, say, whether any of Epstein’s famous friends participated in his sex trafficking, or if his death in custody in 2019 was truly a suicide, as authorities have said. But conspiracy theorists may still feel vindicated – and to some extent they should, Matthew Dallek, a political historian at George Washington University, said.

    The Israel Lobby goes to Europe

    Now, like America over the decades, European countries can watch as their governing bodies fall prey to pro-Israel lobbyists ready to propose AIPAC-like legislation favoring Israel, especially censorship and defunding of organizations and critics of Israel. According to this report by Cecile Surasky of Muzzlewatch, the American based Israel Lobby organization, American Jewish Committee, is expanding operations in Europe in order to influence perceptions of Israel, whose brand went into the tank after the Gaza massacre a year ago, but also, presumably to work to influence legislation and elections in key European countries.

    The AJC already maintains offices in Berlin, Brussels (Transatlantic Institute), Geneva (UN Watch), Paris and Rome.

    Now that the Likud party under Netanyahu has pretty much nullified Obama's Cairo pleas for humanitarian treatment of the Palestinians and his intent to deliver the two states solution, there is still Europe to deal with.

    It may be noted that the AJC had previously tried to convince EU organizations that criticism of Israel is anti-Semitic and that funding of NGOs that criticize Israel can be considered a general slur on Jews. In spite of Israel's military occupation of the Palestinian people for over 40 years, while it colonized their lands under government after government, to criticize these actions is fundamentally anti-Semitic. Furthermore, the AJC contended that anyone who calls the establishment of the state of Israel a "racist endeavour" in spite of its Arab-Jew segregation laws, or which compare Israel's attacks on the Palestinians to the behavior of the Nazis during the Second World War, as a Austrian bishop did a few years ago after visiting the West Bank, is pure anti-Semitism.

    Likewise, those who depict Israel as an "apartheid" regime, are necessarily anti-Semites. Was it not Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who just the other day cautioned Israel that if it does not provide independence for the Palestinians, it will inevitably become an Apartheid society?

    Along with the AJC, other pro-Israel organizations, the European Jewish Congress, B'nai B'rith, and the European Friends of Israel (EFI), have opened offices in Brussels. During Israel's offensive against Gaza last year, one of them, the EFI, circulated papers that defended the killing of Palestinian civilians. According to the EFI, it was impossible for Israel to avoid civilian deaths because Hamas, a Palestinian resistance movement, had ordered its members "to discard uniforms and dress in regular clothes that made them indistinguishable from the civilian population".

    A leaked email from David Harris, Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), has surfaced in files linked to Jeffrey Epstein. The message details a high-level political intervention in Greece during 2013.

      AJC engaged with Greek leaders, including meetings with Prime minister Antonis Samaras

    That year, Greece witnessed an extraordinary wave of criminal prosecutions targeting Golden Dawn — then the country’s third-largest parliamentary party. One of the most controversial measures was the abrupt suspension of state funding to this democratically elected party — a step many considered unconstitutional.

    For years, questions lingered: Who exactly proposed this drastic and legally questionable move to the Prime Minister’s office?

    The leaked correspondence appears to provide an answer.

    Written shortly before the Hellenic Parliament voted to cut Golden Dawn’s state funding, the email notes that the party held 18 out of 300 seats — far from a fringe group. It states that Prime Minister Antonis Samaras met with a single foreign organization described as “friendly to Greece” and pledged in that meeting to take a strong stand against “Nazism.” The organization is explicitly identified as the American Jewish Committee (AJC).

    For additional context on how the criminal case against Golden Dawn’s 2012 MPs was prepared, Takis Baltakos — a close aide to Antonis Samaras at the time — later spoke candidly in a widely discussed recorded conversation.

Morgan McSweeney: brains behind Labour's comeback undone by poor judgment | The Guardian |

He earned his political stripes fighting extremism across London, wresting control of Labour from its Trotskyite faction in Lambeth and seeing off challenges from the far-right BNP in Dagenham. He won a reputation as a first-rate organiser but, in 2015, his campaign to install the Blairite MP Liz Kendall as the Labour party leader ended in crushing defeat: she got just 4.5% of the vote, losing to Corbyn.

McSweeney spent most of the Corbyn years strategising on how to drag Labour back to the centre, spending several years at the helm of the moderate thinktank Labour Together. He alighted on Starmer, a former human rights lawyer and director of public prosecutions, as the candidate who could command the support of party members and the electorate. When Corbyn resigned after the 2019 defeat, McSweeney oversaw Starmer's leadership campaign - and his election to the role with 56% of the vote.

He was accused of presiding over a toxic culture in Downing Street, initiating vicious briefing wars against anyone who looked like a leadership challenge - including the health secretary, Wes Streeting, a former ally.
