This is a quick follow-up to Grace Reid's excellent diary on censorship in the US
Censorship isn't official US government policy. What we have is de facto censorship. In 1986, the Reagan administration allowed lapse the Fairness Doctrine. This law enforced "equal time" rules when it came to dissenting view points seeing the light of day. If you had a right-wing gas-bag on the morning chats, then the network was bound by law to provide a platform to the opposition
